*** Random comment to my own post btw on stupid outdated gender stereotypes: only a REAL MAN would be bold enough to learn how to sew on non-camo colored fabric 🤪
@TheEffekt LOL. I was only kidding. For some reason (insecurity, I think), there's cultural barriers in the US to doing this... Although, smokejumpers and firefighters are often considered among the more "manly" folks and sewing is a major component of their skill base. Anyway...
@TheEffekt had to repair my nomex shirts almost every fire run due to the chain on my saw snagging the top of the fire shirt above my shoulder from the gap between the power head and the protective sheath.
Most of the sewing was on jacked up logging roads on our way back to the command post. I got better at patching and not stabbing myself pretty quickly lol
They're not even roles. We used to call them stereotypes. Looking back, that was a good word for it, because it signals in the word itself that the categories aren't real.
@KrajciTom LOL Dunno who I am trying to impress. Excuse me while I go buy some truck balls and jack up my truck, and put an AR-15 sticker in the back window 🤪
@KrajciTom All of the right leaning folks i know are extremely, extremely insecure... thus the anti-LGBTQ stance, the extreme reaction to the trans community, etc. etc. Even the racism... I wonder if it was teasing as a kid for some of them (for being "too girly" et al) and overcompensation. Too bad it's put us into such a poor position as a country.
IMO this shift toward gendering sewing is cultural damage from ready-to-wear mass-produced clothing. Menswear was frequently made by tailors who were men — who goes to a tailor any more? Who can afford one or more bespoke suits? Most men buy off the rack and have them altered; alterations are mostly made by women.
The most common custom clothing in US culture is a wedding or bridesmaid's dress, and they're generally made by women.
Like coding and beer making, sewing became gendered.
@wendinoakland @heartofcoyote Yep... Needed a heavy duty machine for an upcoming project (reupholstery!). The machine that is usually here is verboten for leather/etc. So I bought this one for $40 and restored it to working order! m.ai6yr.org/@ai6yr/11433747651…
@TheEffekt @nickapos Oooh, hemming is very straightforward. I haven't done it yet, but that's probably the most common sewing operation here in the household (my wife hems all my son's pants... We joke he's got short stubby legs 🤪 )
@nickapos The biggest thing for me would be alterations. I'm short, 5'5" and virtually everything I buy is too long. Shirts hang down too far, pants drag on the ground.

I definitely will, though as I don't like to spend money on new clothes unless it's essential.

Call it fabric engineering.

Hemming them up would be huge for me.
