I also like #animalcrossing , #thesims , #thepitt , #twinpeaks , and random cartoons in terms of media. It varies.

also there is no algorithm here. No gods, no masters. Post about whatever you want. You don't need to post just for attention because there is no way to control which post gets it. An absolutely ancient post can suddenly be perceived for no reason in particular and you can boost a post an entire year later if you bookmark it. You are free.

Welcome, Evie! Xitter refugee here too; never went to Bluesky likely for some of the reasons you mention for leaving (at least temporarily)!

Others have already hit you with a bunch of the basics. so the one thing I'll add is that Mastodon is OPEN SOURCE CODE--which means that unlike ANY of the alternatives, there is precisely ZERO chance of us waking up one day and finding that our social media presence (and all our data) have just been bought by some corrupt billionaire oligarch who's working with our least favorite autocratic head-of-state!

Sort of like the difference between Signal and WhatsApp or even (server-side) Telegram for messaging.

Oh, we still play #ACNH every day too! We're not so much (re-)decorating our island because we like what it looks like, but every day we do the rounds to clean up (15 sticks, 2 clumps of weeds and 4 fossils) and to harvest the stones. We're collecting photos of every villager -- we have a whole spreadsheet to keep track, and we manage which villager can go (when we both have their photo) and which must stay.

Except Canberra. She has been with us since the beginning, she must stay!
