🧩 A math puzzle. 🚗 A solar car. 🌪️ Natural-disaster insurance. ⚡ Electricity oversupply in Kyushu.
These were four very different questions put to ClimateGPT 4.3, a specialized climate model, during a recent Internet Archive tour. The results were a mix of useful answers, wrong turns & outright refusals.

Then there's the goddamned gall to promote a CLIMATE themed LLM as the infrastructure needed to train and maintain these things adds multiple small Western nations worth of usage to an already strained planet. Chunks of the world were literally on fire this year, did that just pass you by?

A "climate model" is a physics based simulation of parts of the global climate system. It's a technical term with that specific meaning.
A Large Language Model is not a climate model, even if trained primarily on climate-related texts.

Also, a LLM is the wrong "tool" for the job of climate & long term weather analysis. Not even close. When you want something like this you should always ask a professional, in this case a climatologist.
Does anyone know another general media archival project I can share things with that might use that data more responsibly than Internet Archive is very clearly about to? I don't feel comfortable sharing media with an archive that has embraced such a destructive technology.

"ClimateGPT Model 1 was the first AI model to be entirely trained and operated on renewable energy, specifically hydropower"

the data sets are also open, open weights, and focus on creating tools to aid climate data analysis

We have quite a few alternatives here. A Ouija board has the benefit of being made of wood. Tarot cards are cheap and plentiful. I-Ching, if you like to throw sticks. And if all else fails, you can get a set of dice. Interpret them as you see fit!
Asking the bullshit engine is almost as certain as any of these, but carries with it a weight of certainty to which human beings so often fall victim. And it kills the planet, while you're at it.

in reply to internetarchive • •You're not "protecting your content from AI." You're erasing history..
Blocking ia_archiverbot doesn't stop AI companies. They'll find other sources. But the public record? Gone.
You're collateral damage to your own cause. The Internet Archive isn't an AI company. It's a nonprofit that's preserved the web for ~30 years. You're not fighting AI. You're fighting a library.
~40% of websites vanish after 10 years. Without the Archive, your "content" won't be protected from AI > > > it'll just be gone.

That ended today. A mission of preservation is completely incompatible with genAI.

Same here, sticker now being removed from my laptop 😔
Here's hoping the many archiving teams around the world find a better, more corruption resistant means to store their good work.
Brewster, I expected better of you.

The laughing you provoked sucked in some of the tears this situation was causing and choked me out. Thank you for the best sleep I have had this week.

Please do let me know if you plan to continue using donor funds for this.

This is how I would coyly describe a math test I failed, except when I fail a math test I don’t poison Black communities in the process.

Are you going to tell us tomorrow that you gave the entirety of the IA to the world killing swill machines to feast on, and demand we praise you for it?
Delete this. Delete yourself. The Archive is a hollow shell and none of you should be trusted again.

The only things more climate unfriendly than LLMs are India and China burning tons of coal every single day.
