Pixelfed bans AI generated contributions.

We heard you! We are not accepting any AI or agentic code contributions, and will keep building Pixelfed by hand.

in reply to Johannes Timaeus

@timaeus Sure. But what it is not, is an argument for deliberately including slop in your own projects. Purity is an ideal, and maybe impossible to achieve because we exist in an impure world, but giving up and embracing the slop is not the answer. Five thousand years of religious haggling documents that.
@pixelfed
in reply to Greg Hills

@winterknell @timaeus Even more recently, decades of F/OSS projects riding on the trust that contributions are made in good faith and compliant with projects' licences documents that too.

When someone gets to a point where "we can't expect people to embrace the shared values our community is built on" (whether a F/OSS licence or a requirement that people contribute their own work) is the justification for not having shared values, what is it that they feel like they're defending?

in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman So the latter, got it. If you aren't against it then you're for it, in this case, like with fascism.
> the anti-AI people need to give it a fucking rest

"The anti fascist people need to give it a fucking rest"

Now tell me you think I should take a rest opposing the fascist failed technology burning up the planet and wasting so many precious resources that cements in place the permanent under class while empowering the ruling class to control literally everything we do?
@cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed

in reply to SackOfBones (any/all)

@sackofbones @cuirass_entertainment Well, that was an easy block. Reading replies he gave Ben, "I'm immune to reports, I run my own instance" is very Alt-Right posturing. Dude, FediBlock. Good luck yelling in the Phantom Zone. Spinning up a new instance and domain wastes only your money.

I understand people with blindness have a different perception of AI because natural language processing before and after is a huge difference, and calling for it to be ahut off entirely means going back to crappier tools. It genuinely sucks, despite AI being essentially a fascist Speak and Spell.

But disability or not, damn, what an asshole.

in reply to Tock

@Tock @sackofbones @cuirass_entertainment It’s amazing how EVERY. SINGLE. #cogsucker taken to task for using #AI “runs his own instance using my installed solar panels” (and probably a pedal bike generator for good measure) so they can avoid the obvious culpability for data center gas turbines, which is entirely indefensible.

Of course, 95% of the time, that self-hosted instance doesn’t exist.

sounds well-adjusted

but on the topic you introduced: i enjoy engaging and mocking bigots and vatniks and other sordid types (you're not that, bear with me here). in order to keep them talking, until they generate enough material for a completely airtight case to get them banned. *then* i report them

what do you think alex:

should i add AI techbros to my troll hunt amusements?

in reply to ⏩︎VOTE⏪︎ ᶜʸⁿⁱᶜⁱˢᵐ⁼ᵃᶜᶜᵉᵖᵗᵃⁿᶜᵉ (Ben Royce)

@benroyce It's amazing how the same fucking guy who's over here desperately trying to pretend like Ai isn't purely evil shit and how this garbage isn't run by fascists ALSO is elsewhere talking about how Substack is his blog platform of choice. Same fucking guy.

I mean, what's his encore, singing the praises of Omarchy?

These fucking people.

in reply to Alex Chapman

Sadly, these corporations are fighting tooth and nail to prevent on-device LLMs because they can't profit on them.

  • They've jacked up GPU and RAM prices so nobody can build a powerful enough machine to run the biggest LLMs.
  • They're spewing out all kinds of propaganda stories to try to get the government to outlaw local LLMs.

So until we take the corporations down, most folks won't be able to run sufficiently useful LLMs locally.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

@tk I get that, but there's also the fact that there are blind people and also people who have cognitive disabilities that make the traditional coding process really difficult or in some cases impossible, and thus AI has helped them bring their dreams into reality. This is why I'm against the whole banning of AI contributions, as someone might wanna contribute an accessibility fix, but can't due to the fact they could only get it done with a coding agent. @Hyperlynx
in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman @tk @Hyperlynx blind people aren't excluded from coding. Blind people, as well as people with other kinds of disabilities, are just as capable of creative and technical tasks. To suggest people with disabilities are so incapable of these tasks that they need an AI to do the entire process for them is ableist
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

@Neil E. Hodges @Len @Alex Chapman The person has an use case for his case, l Do not see any reason why he should not use AI if it opens his world.
We all disagree on big Tech farms taking the monopoly of it, and I agree that I can only run an LLM on domain specific or local host > so it does not even reach the net with RAG training data all offline.
You guy's over react as always and I have as many opposer's on my block list as they are rude and take it to the man not the subject from this thread alone, The ones that self host or are in a server I amply see is by now ignored server from here. Me and others made the point you think we miss about it and we wont stop whatever you retards think of it and your spite should be addressed to those CEO's of BIg Tech that happen to be fascist which product I do not use at all and spit on them as they took the monopoly and their face became the face of fascism or whatever you can imagine which is not the Tech. I admire alexchapman@vee.seedy.cc to stand up against a bunch of Jihadists as he has the right to have a decent life and tools to use as incapacitated person. I mean what is wrong with you wildling idiots? For real, keep your spew as you pollute the sphere on Fediverse and go you way but shut up the vocals or at least be decent in a conversation.
I have very much more to tell for you guys ignorant stance on this but it would be kinda rhetoric which I'm tired of. No decency is left in you people reacting as such towards someone with an incapacity that on top is more intelligent than you all here. You should be collectively ashamed. Also I wish devs of Pixelfed good luck nor do I reproach their decision personally as they do it to themselves and let us see their wonderful work from today going further. Stop the hate towards people, blame the wealthy that already took over your internet . Hate the game , not the player and mostly not if the player can not achieve something without using that dreadful AI in your eyes. Please stop the hatred like some impotent rage and keep it for yourself> do not use AI and stfu.
On top you will still see 'slop' on your Pixelfed... content isn't excluded just the coding part

Alex Chapman reshared this.

in reply to Chad McCullough

@chadmccullough Because if it were not for a few dozen anti-AI people, the dev would not have done that. And to put it into context, there's thousands of Pixelfed users, and a few dozen, maybe a couple hundred at most, are part of this anti-AI nonsense, so quite a minority. @cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed
in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman So, how do you know how many Pixelfed users wanted the project to stop using AI?

Being anti-AI is not nonsense. Its use is full of ethical issues that people like you don't seem to give a shit about, but many people just like me do give a shit about.

@cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed

in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman Listen, use or don't use it. I don't really care. I choose not to use it or support it any way. If you want to support it, then support it. But you really need to do a better job of knowing when and where to defend your use of it. This is not the place.

alex i glanced at your profile

you're blind?

you're not the first blind person i've met who defends AI

and i understand it. it must be such a boon for those with vision impairments

is it this that drives your position?

i think AI, if done ethically, can be a great benefit for people with disabilities

but alex, you have to understand: pushing the current AI manifestation *in general* is not the same issue. be more nuanced

in reply to ⏩︎VOTE⏪︎ ᶜʸⁿⁱᶜⁱˢᵐ⁼ᵃᶜᶜᵉᵖᵗᵃⁿᶜᵉ (Ben Royce)

@benroyce That and also that me and my other friends and even people that I know through Blind Information Technology Solutions (BITS) struggle to code by hand and thus AI helps us get good quality code done and thus we are making accessible programs. Also we're not just one shot prompting everything, some of our stuff we've worked on for weeks and some repos have like hundreds of tests, and not just that, we test things to make sure everything is perfect, and if something's off, we go back to the Claude window and tell it what's wrong, and what's missing or what it needs to do, even researching documentation for the NVDA screen reader and libraries that help programs interact with the screen reader APIs, and it does really well because we take the time to make it work. @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed
in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment
that's wonderful

a suggestion for you:

do not champion AI

champion AI for people with disabilities

if you champion AI in general, you're going to be met with venom. because, in general, AI is terrible

just last week i got in a similar argument:

mastodon.social/@benroyce/1173…

the blind guy wound up agreeing with me by the end of the back and forth

it's about nuance: bad in general, good in niches

alex: just voice the nuance

RE: mastodon.social/users/benroyce…

in reply to ⏩︎VOTE⏪︎ ᶜʸⁿⁱᶜⁱˢᵐ⁼ᵃᶜᶜᵉᵖᵗᵃⁿᶜᵉ (Ben Royce)

@benroyce Yeah, and that's why devs outright banning AI/agentic code contributions is not a good thing because people like me and those in BITS that would want to contribute accessibility fixes, because yes blind people can access visual apps like Pixelfed and obviously Instagram, because of alt text and the audio in videos, and Loops has an alt text feature for videos, but for example I wanted to fix the top bar icons in the Loops app, where it wouldn't say back on some screens but just select with VoiceOver and nothing would be said, I hope that's fixed in the next update, but if AI contributions weren't banned, I could literally describe what the issues is, explain to the AI that it needs to add an accessibility label for that icon, and it would go and do that, then I could test it, commit and push, then do a PR. People need to see those uses rather than going AI bad, AI banned. Yeah there's some disadvantages, like people who will one shot prompt something and submit it claiming to fix something and all they've done is made it worse or added unneeded nonsense, and also the whole debacle with datacenters, but people need to see the positives, like how its allowing blind people and those with cognitive disabilities that mean the traditional coding process is extremely difficult or impossible, to make cool things and fix issues in other places. @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed
in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment
but alex do you see how if you led with this angle instead of defending AI *in general* you would have a nicer time here?

because you have a point

AI *in general* fucking sucks

i don't know the answer for people with disabilities. but it has to be something that doesn't feed a dehumanizing theft machine

the problem is the corporations. they are ruining AI

running protein folding or cosmology simulations is not the problem

in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment
in another thread? because i don't see that here

i understand the psychology of that. you don't want to cite the people with disabilities angle because then it gets personal, and that hurts

but if you remove that angle, you wind up defending something that, objectively, is terrible

i admit AI helps blind people

now you have to admit AI sucks in general

or... you get all this disgust dumped on you. that's a hard road man

@alexchapman @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment
the fediverse is full of programmers who resent the dehumanization and mediocrity that AI at their jobs has created. this is a different experience than yours. the fediverse allows them to dump their frustrations. so when you come here and defend AI *in general* you're just setting yourself up for a drama wave of attacks

but i also understand if you say it's good for blind people it's hurtful to get clapback

i don't know man

in reply to ⏩︎VOTE⏪︎ ᶜʸⁿⁱᶜⁱˢᵐ⁼ᵃᶜᶜᵉᵖᵗᵃⁿᶜᵉ (Ben Royce)

@benroyce I'm not the only one who defends AI, there's a whole load of us blind people on the Fediverse that defend the positive aspects of AI, and all of us should be able to do that without getting hate for it. Just ask the BITS people, or any of the people I've boosted that talk about the amazing things they've been able to accomplish thanks to the rise of coding agents. @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed
in reply to Alex Chapman

i'm not going to attack you (although above i mocked you before i glanced at your profile and remembered the other blind person i got in this argument with, sorry for that)

but i am going to continue to attack AI

i am not an omnipotent being, and i don't know the solution for here and now

but the solution should probably be something like local AI rather than feeding vile corporations. they are turning AI into a monster

@benroyce I wish local AI was as capable as Opus 5.5 and GPT 6 Sol, but the BITS people have tried local models and they can just about do basic stuff, but when they try to do accessibility APIs that's where it falls apart, and thus we are stuck using the corporate cloud models. And I forgive you for earlier. But at some point I am gonna do a thing that people can read whenever they wanna throw their hateful crap, and then I'm just gonna say, here's why you should see the positives, read this thing I wrote to explain it all, and if they don't wanna do that, that's on them. @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment @pixelfed

i understand your angle though, and i appreciate you

in reply to Joshua

@J3317 @alexchapman @chadmccullough @cuirass_entertainment I'm only becoming aware of the accessibility gains for "having to live with AI being a thing." Being fortunate with working eyeballs means I've never had to worry about that on top of all the shitty things that go on with how AI is made, grifted and foisted on everyone else. In our shop we all struggle with accessibility standards because we can all read and see just fine. Thanks for sharing your stories
in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman
Yes, computer programming is often considered an art form.

Definition and examples

For example:

- Wiktionary defines art as "Skillful creative activity, usually with an aesthetic focus" and even gives "art of programming" as an example.
- Donald E. Knuth wrote a classic of the field called "The Art of Computer Programming" about contemplating the beauty of algorithms.
- Practical disciplines like architecture can be considered arts if they focus on creating objects of beauty and creativity as well as utility.

How art applies to programming

As for programming, it could be considered an art because:

- The source code is beautiful and elegantly coded.
- The algorithms used are brilliantly applied.
- The architectural design is pleasantly well-organized.
- The user interface is simple, colorful, and well-polished.
- The overall aim is to inspire as well as to enable.

State of the art

So you can see something like the iPhone advancing the state of the art, not just in making phone calls, but in bringing Steve Job's creative aesthetics to the masses.
@pixelfed

in reply to GunChleoc

@alexchapman @sackofbones
So, I haven't even tried using AI for programming, because programming is a creative process that I enjoy very much. That's where the art form aspect of programming comes in. When I do a code review on something human written, I look out for the bits that are not aesthetically pleasing. That's usually where the bugs are hiding.
in reply to Alex Chapman

@alexchapman It's not about the outcomes, it's about how they were achieved. "Exitus acta probat" is one hell of a way to go through life.

Yeah, maybe someone can whip together code that works using Ai. Does that make it okay how LLM infrastructure is killing any progress we've made towards mitigating climate change? How it rots people's brains? How it destroying the internet?

If not wanting the world to burn makes me an extremist, I will happily bear that mark of honor.

in reply to Legit_Spaghetti

@Legit_Spaghetti The infrastructure isn't killing anything, that's just a lie made by these people who are delusional and think extremist things like oh this is run by fascists and these people are trying to be the next version of Hitlar, like come the fuck on people, stop indulging in your dumb delusions for once. @pixelfed

You can tell yourself whatever you want so you can feel better about using this shit, and you can use whatever excuses you like. But just because you refuse to face reality, that doesn't mean the rest of us have to applaud your decision to ignore facts because they inconvenience you.

Every lie we tell ourselves incurs a debt to the truth, and eventually, that debt will have to be repaid.

Plan-A̵̛͈̬̥̿͋̓͛̕ doesn't like this.

in reply to pixelfed

even though there is a stronger consensus that using AI will degrade the project quality in the long term, I personally feel like we have to find middle ground. Completely abandoning AI will slow down progress. I see so many pain points in using the #pixelfed app itself. I feel, goal should be to make OSS genuine alternative to private software and taking AI's help, will help us achieve it. But doing a complete vibe coding is a no no. Tools like auto completion are really helpful tools
in reply to John Doe

Maybe slower progress isn't a problem if it means the result behaves as intended the first time around, and faster progress in the short term, followed by having to fix unknown bugs (many of which have already been fixed but are just being dug up by LLMs) results in slower progress in the long run. :3c

in reply to DLink

@DLink Has autocomplete feature on your android keyboard ruined your texts? AI is not something that is bad in every way. Yes, using AI to vibecode features, mindlessly building everything using AI is what you are talking about and I agree that leads to really bad experience. The code completion part of AI, where it just completes the word or couple that you are typing would greately help speed up development.
in reply to pixelfed

for me it doesn't matter if its school code or profilatic code. Open source means to me give back to community something that makes it better and I believe pixelfed found a way to share pictures when photography is someting you love without ads or undesired content. I know pixelfed devs/creator will make a good decision about adopting or not llm's, because what is more important than that is helping others to find options to express their art and culture through photography.
in reply to Lilith Ashley Nyx Arson

Even with power tools you still need to know what the fuck you're doing, I guess AI is only appealing to the billions of talentless, nobody people who are lazy and cant take time to study, learn and practice anything. They think they now have the power to do what they could not before when in reality they are still talentless nobodies. You can tell what they do is AI generated.

Simply put, the AI is more talented than them, which says a lot of these people. And they will never take the time and effort to fix that because tthey are too stupid to do so...

This entry was edited (today, 8:08 AM)
in reply to ENIGMATICO

I can't say I agree with this line of reasoning, honestly

the reason AI is appealing is because you can pretend to be talented without actually having to put any effort in. low effort, high reward. the same reason people are addicted to short-form content (see: tiktok, reels, shorts, etc) - dopamine

it has nothing to do with intellectual ability

Unknown parent

AI is not being used as a tool. Thats the problem. And please dont take it to the personal territory, this is not something that affects me personally, this affects everyone. Can we please address the issue that we can not buy PC hardware anymore because of the chip sortage caused by the massive data center buildout? And thats nott mentioning the inacceptable amount of resources used by them because, lets break it to you, AI was NOT ready for deployment just yet but they did anyways. Its terribly inefficient and, to be fair, you probably cant even run a somewhat "decent" model in a consumer GPU just yet. But sure, lets cope with it and pretend "its just a tool".

Don't know if it's wise to leave a comment like this - but:

AI or no AI can be a question that leads to great discussion.

What I don't get is why we can't argue like human beings. I chose Mastodon for kindness and as a positive alternative to other social media. Not to read the same old comments throwing insults at each other.

Calm down, tone it down, hug each other, folks. And then we can argue. No?

Now waiting for the shitstorm for this comment.

in reply to Jan Paul

@JanPaul I too like the kindness here.
That's why the no AI policy is a good thing. To help communicate human to human.
When I see your profile picture, that looks AI-generated, now I'm doubting, I am just responding to a bot? Is there an humain there? And I just want to walk away. Don't worry, I'm a real human. I've heard this about my profile picture sometimes before. Funny thing is: I drew this picture a couple of years ago. Took a photo of mine and experimented with my wacom tablet. Nowadays AI seems to have compromised this art style.

I'm rather sceptical when it comes to AI usage, so I appreciate this decision too. I just noticed some harsh comments which turned out quite aggressive.

Now I'm thinking of a new profile pic :blobcatthonking:

in reply to Lilith Ashley Nyx Arson

Im not calling disabled people lazy and I am not mentioning, talking or hinting at disabled people in my messages, I am talking about the people who uses AI to "save time" to do things like coding for them without knowing anything about computer engineering, or drawing or music or any of that. Its not being used as a tool, its being used to make content for them and post it online as their own creation because they dont want to practice that craft even though they could if they wanted to.
in reply to Lilith Ashley Nyx Arson

I cant draw properly and I still managed to get much better practicing and studying it, years ago back when I used to draw. Am I a pro? No, probably never will, thats not one of my "core" skills, but I still can do it somehow because I dedicated myself to it. Whats the excuse here? If you want to do something but never dedicate effort to it you'll never get it done, regardless of your skills. Dont go asking the stupid machine to produce slop for you and then make it as if it was your creation, take that time to actually learn the craft and people will like it more even if its not perfect.

(Not that you do it, Im talking in plural as in general)

the idea that being “lazy” is bad implies that your worth is based on your ability work

and the idea that being “stupid” is bad implies that your worth is based on your intellectual ability

neither of these are inherently bad traits and they should not be considered such

Being lazy is not bad, posing on the internet telling people that something you made with AI was made by you is. If you are lazy just admit it. There is a lot of stuff I could have done that I never did because I am lazy, yet you dont see me going to the slop machine and asking it to do something for me.

Being stupid can actually be fixed because your intellectual ability depends on the number of patterns your brain can recognize. And the only way to adquire these patterns is to do actual work on everything you want to learn about, be it coding, art, music, whatever. Yes, studying fixes stupidity. And again, this is not about disabled people. Disabled people are disabled, they cant do stuff. Fine. But the clankers are not, they can do it but they dont.

And by the way, being stupid is not a bad thing by itself, but when people's stupidity drags you down with them it is a problem. This of course includes people trying to shove AI into society and causing massive problems.

@pixelfed And to be clear, I congratulate Pixelfed on their decision as it is a hard nut to keep source code healthy and working on all clients. Their decision I accept, but taking it to brag for more users to join cause community hates AI as it is the main thing of their product , the herd.
Time will tell how you fare @pixelfed and I wish you honestly best with or without this decision.
Reason for me to NOT use your thing at all, because your decisions make you less reliable if based on community input only > so gud luck.
I'd love to see as much input in contributing this project written by hand as required to the amount of unrelated hate of AI that ya'll support.
A double edged sword.
