Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it

Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,

I was too young to know what it meant at the time, but I remember it. What it meant soaked in about 10 years later for me.
in reply to Katherine Bond

I encountered that with in-laws. Cut them off when my husband died.

Republicans. Pure evil. And why I don’t talk to my family

Eyup. Same for me. The few cousins and other relatives I have left are all backers of Traitor One and have been on the wrong side of social progress for my entire life. Hard pass. I haven't seen any of them in 30+ years now.

The only family I talk and exchange letters is my sister, who is a lot like me. The rest are into this Zionism colonizing Christian madness

What a coincidence. I just had a falling-out with a fellow whom I thought might be a friend of mine. He’s a musician and he had given me a (broken) tube amplifier - quite a generous move though. Anyway, I was at a party today telling him how I liked Neil Young. He came back how Neil Young was a Canadian and should have gone back to Canada. I was confused and said that yeah, I’d like to move to Canada. Then he looked confused and said that Young hated the USA and sang songs against us. I said, well, he did sing songs critical of Alabama, sure. Then he said that his song about Ohio was wrong, or garbled words to that effect. Of course I was shocked, and said that it was very wrong that these unarmed protestors were shot. He then said that they had it coming to them, and that they had “provoked” the shooting. Well, I just left the conversation after that, and did not talk to him the rest of the day. And not again.

I was only six or seven years old when this happened. But...I adored the cousins that lived up the street from me. One of them had recently started college. I thought for sure she was among the young people who were being shot at, and cried in a way only children do. Family had to explain to me that she was at a different college.

Years later I watch the movie Across the Universe. In one scene they re-enact Kent State massacre. Seven year old me cried hard all over again.

Yes... I remember well...was about to graduate H.S.

Between the assassinations in 4th grade and this in 6th . . .
in reply to Katherine Bond

In Canada. Remember hearing about it (I was 9). Whenever I've thought of it I've thought of it as a horrendous betrayal of citizens.
in reply to Katherine Bond

During that time, with Bobby Kennedy’s assassination, Martin Luther’s assassination, Kent State, it felt like the world was on fire.
in reply to Katherine Bond

Yes, it did. The world caught fire and turned upside down, then we got disco, Reganomics, and the StarWars Defense Initiative.
in reply to Katherine Bond

It seems we have more problems now @Katherine Bond. The fires need to be put out again.
in reply to Katherine Bond

Did they ever go away or were they burning underground like a coal mine fire…

Get out of town
Think I’ll get out of town
Get out of town
Think I’ll get out of town
I head for the sticks with my bus and friends
I follow the road, though I don’t know where it ends
Get out of town, get out of town
Think I’ll get out of town
Cause the world is turnin’
I don’t wanna see it turn away

-- Neil Young (On the Beach, 1974)
