Hi, I’m Ellie.
I’ve jumped to Mastodon after realising (again) how toxic big tech is. Trump and Musk’s obsession with controlling social media sealed it—I miss when it was about connecting, not just a tool for the rich to twist public opinion.
I’ll post a little bit about politics (Carol Cadwalladr fan!) but also pretty pictures, my pet, and travel snaps. Looking forward to actual conversations—not just whatever the algorithm wants me to see.
Questions -
If I start a second Mastodon account, do I have the option that the muted word list transfers to the new account, or does it have to rebuilt from scratch?
- Same question, but regarding muted and blocked individual users?
You can't copy filters to other accounts.
However, you can copy mutes and blocks.
You can copy your follows, bookmarks, lists, mutes, blocks and domain blocks to any other account whenever you want using the CSV files that are usually used for transferring accounts.
If you look at the transfer guide and do steps 2 and 3, you can use these steps even if you're running two accounts at once instead of transferring accounts:

@taylorhadden hey. I would just like to say thanks to you guys for reaching out in here on the #Fediverse and offering a solution. I was able to get #Tangent to run using the solution provided in the issue tracker.
Hopefully you guys will be able to figure out the root cause of it for your future releases and such to get in more users 😉
non-australians only for now...
What's your idea of Australian Cuisine? What would you expect to see under an Australian section of a restaurant menu?
I’m still not ready to do livestreaming. I’m far too tired, and need another night to rest. So I’m cancelling my livestream tonight that was scheduled from 7-9:00pm.
BUT--I’ll be trying something new tomorrow. A daytime livestream from 1-3:00pm. More info coming!
My sincerest apologies to all. I just need one more night to recharge my batteries. I’ll be refreshed tomorrow.

"Bring your whole self to work!"
Given that I exist in several universes, a goodly number of star systems, numerous continents, and at least two Waffle Houses, I'm not sure there's enough space at work for all of me. Or I should say, for all versions of me.
Maybe we could try time sharing this body.
Yes it is, you can already manually pull in all the public parts of a discussion by opening the thread's "original page" and then copy-pasting the URLs of all the replies into the search box on your instance. This is very tedious so no one does this, but there's nothing to stop a client or script or instance doing it automatically.
I am not a dev but AFAIK the main holdup has been how to do this efficiently without causing strain on instances.
just read about yet another tesla crash/fire resulting the passengers being trapped with doors that wont open. A $30 'life hammer' (thats a brand name but also the generic name) solves some of this - you can bust the window and cut the seatbelt in a few seconds.
Seriously, its one of those motoring accessories you can't afford not to have. The life you hammer might be your own.
You know, I ever see a politician in a hoodie and shorts again, I'm going to vote for the other guy automatically.

The weeks of performative “resistance” from those in my party were limited to undignified antics. Voting to shut the government down will punish millions or risk a recession.Threads
I just finished A Pail of Air by Fritz Leiber over at Project Gutenberg. It's great post apocalyptic tale about earth thrown into a deep freeze after a rogue Star tears the planet from its orbit. There's not a lot of action but the world building is phenomenal. I'd love to read more stories set in this universe. #scifi #pulp #apocalypse #ProjectGutenberg
In Memoriam: Mark Klein, AT&T Whistleblower Who Revealed NSA Mass Spying
EFF is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mark Klein, a bona fide hero who risked civil liability and criminal prosecution to help expose a massive spying program that violated the rights of millions of Americans.Electronic Frontier Foundation
Using the shell command in CAD software might seem like an easy way to hollow out a model for 3D printing, but it often leads to inconsistent wall thickness and print artifacts. This post explains why the shell command falls short and introduces a more precise manual modeling approach to achieve uniform, high-quality prints.
US voters:
Call your Senators ASAP and tell them:
- Do not allow the GOP budget to come up for a vote
- We are not fooled if you bring your own budget up first, knowing it will fail. Do NOT allow the Republican budget to pass. Period. Do NOT rescue them.
Infuriating! I've made more Senate calls in the pat few weeks than at any time in my life.
Seems delusional to think that normal processes are still underway.

Another not-random question for #bookstodon - has anyone done modern reviews of classic middle school aged series like Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew or similar looking at how/if they are dated and likely problematic? (I assume they are, I read a bunch of them when I was that age but it was 40ish years ago and I don’t remember much about them)
Broadly as a service for parents today looking for discussion about which classics have stood the test of time and remain good and which haven’t aged well.
@wanderinghermit exactly. My question was prompted by seeing multiple people selling long runs of the books in local marketplace listings (seemingly in some cases fairly recent printings by appearance - or basically never read) but before I bought them for my son I wanted to see if anyone had been going back to such series and reviewing them with a modern eye.
(And likewise curious what classics have stood the test of time - The Phantom Tollbooth was still great when I read it to my son)
I find it interesting what is happening to the polls in Canada.
What looked like an upcoming comfortable victory for The Conservatives has changed dramatically after the inauguration of Trump.
Should the Liberals end up winning the election later this year, the US president would be facing the new leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney.
We would then see the chaos president Trump fighting a trade war against a calculated, educated and experienced economist who has lead central banks.
Until then we will all experience a whole flood of tariffs and EOs....
Let's sse if the USA still "exists" by then. 😬😱
Just sayin':
Nobody ever has seen a sadistic destruction of a superpower before. Who knows what's gonna happen til fall.
This happens all the time.
French fries are not French, they’re Belgian at best.
One of the most popular Chinese dishes in the USA is General Tso's Chicken. In China no one knows who the General Tso is and never tasted his Chicken.
This is not an exhausting list.
reminds me of the dutch "filet americain"
which 1) for whatever reason has a french name
and 2) is literally raw minced beef with some spices that you're supposed to put on a slice of bread (with maybe some onions/eggs/more spices).
I guess maybe because americans like meat and boneless things? I have no idea what the connection is here honestly
