It might be worth pointing out that not only people with visual and/or auditory impairments benefit from #AltText. It can be useful in many other ways, too.

To me, as an #autistic person whose perception and information processing work in quite different ways, it is not always clear what the point of an image is. Some good alt text can help a lot.

Some clarifying background info in alt text can also be very useful for the general public (which helps to normalise the use of alt text).

My tuxie looks like your sister's, but he's a former street brawler, as you can tell from the ear tip and the way he stares at me for lunch like he's about to mug me.

I am sorry to be the one to have to break this to you my friend but Nikola Tesla died in 1943.

The ironic thing is that though AC is much better for distribution of electricity. It is not used by many components in your home. Most components use a circuit called a bridge rectifier to convert the AC to DC for use.

If you install solar panels then you will lose 37% of efficiency in using an inverter to supply your house and then the conversion back to be useful for most appliances. Though a few appliances such as those with heater coils, some motors (though DC motors are ramping up) use AC directly.

Most efficient would be to wire most of your house for DC and only use AC were absolutely required. Though the rewiring would be extremely costly so this really would only be practical on a new build. Not to mention

If someone can't tolerate a tiny subset of apps not working due to them banning GrapheneOS through banning using any non-stock OS with the Play Integrity API, then an iPhone is the clear best option for them. Most people hardly have to make any sacrifice to use GrapheneOS since all their apps work at least with the compat toggle.

I used to marvel at the observational powers of some writers. To a great extent I still do. I am, somewhat unwillingly beginning to understand that this comes with the craft. I will offer an example.

Pre-writing me: Hey, look, they have a battery charger plugged into that power bar.

Writing me: A battery charger in their power bar. Interesting. I wonder why they chose this location. Did the charger come first and then get moved to accommodate the power bar? Is this a location central to what they use the batteries for? There's a little dust on the charger. Has the intended use been abandoned? Was there a project that needed rechargeable batteries that has now been left to rot? How did the success or failure of that project affect these people? Did it cause a conflict and if so was it resolved? And OMG stop already!

While this is undeniably useful for crafting a story, I am beginning to think this skill might be as much a curse as a blessing.

So it turns out the geniuses over at Bluesky trust the client app to fetch, and honestly report, webpage metadata for preview cards, so with a little tinkering in the debug tools you can post whatever news stories you like and they look exactly the same as real ones.

I mean that client is just sending arbitrary posts as well and you could just send wrong URLs that don't fit the text.

@dat couldn't this be fixed by the server digitally signing the card metadata so that it can't be modified? If the card metadata is sent back modified, the sighash breaks and the server should reject the post.

@lmorchard Mastodon could also do better than this, since Mastodon is not a zero trust environment. Mastodon is a system which is largely *made of* mechanisms for rating actors according to levels of trust! Servers could easily configure "well, mastodon.social, THEM I trust to generate accurate preview cards, but racistfurries.club we don't trust so I'll generate my own"
