A Health System Is Fighting Idaho’s Abortion Ban. It’s Not Its First Controversial Stance.
β€”

St. Luke’s, Idaho’s largest health system, was outspoken in defending its staff during a backlash against masks and vaccines. It also sued right-wing figure Ammon Bundy β€” and won. Now it’s backing its doctors on the abortion front.

ProPublica reshared this.

I love #ProPublica articles. They're well researched and focused. This story about #StLukes in #Idaho is a great example of one company standing against fascists.

One of my biggest gripes with this platform, fixed!

We should now see *all* replies, regardless of which server we're on, or which server they're posted from.

Thanks @FediTips for the good news.

Some good news about #Mastodon, there has been a very significant bit of code added which will automatically fetch all the replies in a thread. This means everyone will be able to see a thread's whole conversation no matter which server they are on! πŸ₯³

The code has just been "merged" which means it should become available in the next update to Mastodon, hopefully within the next few months.

(Those who want the technical details can see the Pull Request at github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p…)

in reply to Fedi.Tips

Do you know if it will work retrospectively, ie be applied to legacy posts, or only those made after its implementation?
in reply to Sam at BLAG

I'm not a developer, but AFAIK it should apply retrospectively because all it is doing is fetching more posts rather than changing the format of posts.

But I am not a dev! πŸ˜…

Hot off the press, y'all - new research from the folks at the Developer Success Lab.

I'm copying and pasting from an email I wrote to @flourn0 after reading a draft of the now available "No Silver Bullets: Why Understanding Software Cycle Time is Messy, Not Magic."

Because I don't think I can advocate for the quality of and need for this work any better than I did in that email:

A team of aerospace and biomechanics researchers is exploring how people with physical disabilities could venture into #space, visit the Moon, and even travel to #Mars.

I was LITERALLY just saying to a friend that this social media would be more social if I didn't have to go to another site to see the full set of replies to something, and now the change is on its way. THANK YOU!

@sjwrenlewis on the button:

'The most effective way the Labour Govt. can reduce the threat from the populist right is to ensure the economic arguments made by populists against immigration have as little purchase as possible. That means providing more money for public services, not keeping taxes low. [Labour's] opposite approach, at a time when the two right wing populist parties in the UK attract nearly half of all voters in opinion polls, is very worrying'!

You should all be following @SeanCasten -- a member of Congress who gets what's at stake and is talking about it here with some of the clearest language I've seen.

Example: his thread about a Republican move to reward tax evaders and crooks, via a political scam you won't have heard about anywhere else.

Is Concern Over Security Overrated?

The average user may believe that all the hype they read about security on the internet is overrated. To be honest some of it is and some of it is just to sell you a product you do not need.

In the case of Internet Facing Services this is not the case. If you have an internet facing service then you have to be sure your server is secure. This is why I insist on SELinux on my servers. AppArmor is easier to configure though not as configurable as SELinux for as many cases. I would also strongly suggest you never disable SELinux (or AppArmor if that is what you are using) to ease installation and implementation. It is not worth the risk. Just learn to use your Gnu/Linux Hardening system to its fullest extent. Do not disable it.

I have attached a screenshot of an ssh session to my VPS. As you can see every few seconds an attack fails. This is why the security is required.

I just do Friendica and Matrix at this point. I checked out Mastodon though I am way to verbose, as you might have noticed, to live with only 500 characters πŸ˜€.

@Samuel Lison

Yes, I kind of figured that though I do not see the point of running both a friendica and mastodon instance. I cannot afford another VPS and I would rather not divide up the resources further than I already have. Friendica really uses a lot of memory too.

Tariffs are bad for business, and worse for consumers.

We regret the unjustified 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports imposed by the United States worth $28 billion.

We are responding with countermeasures worth up to €26 billion.

Nobody needs that – on both sides, neither the European Union nor the United States.

In a world fraught with uncertainties, it is not in our common interest to burden our economies with tariffs.

@omegaprobe @pluralistic Interesting, thanks!

The conclusion is at the end of the article. TL;DR: EU Copyright Directive was passed because it then US wouldn't put tariffs on EU goods. Its article 6 prevents jailbreaking iPhones and Teslas, cracking DRM, etc. Abolishing it costs us nothing, but it would hurt the intellectual monopolies of US and unleash a new wave of creative companies.

in reply to elgregor

As an American citizen, I'm begging Europeans to stop respecting US IP law.

One sure fire way to galvanize more of our corporations against this stupid trade war.
