The official statement from Columbia is at president.columbia.edu/content…. The link to that was in an email so bland and uninformative that I ignored the links (one of which doesn't work anyway).

My undergrad degree is from Columbia, and I'm a faculty member for a few more months, though no longer teaching. I intend to continue wearing my mask, since I wear it for health reasons and not “for the purpose of concealing one’s identity in the commission of violations of University policies or state, municipal or federal laws.” After all, it's for health reasons, which is explicitly permitted by policy. My next step: an email to my chair and the dean. I have two thesis defenses coming up this semester; other than those, I don't need to be inside any campus buildings, and I'll run the defenses over Zoom if I have to.

Only took me 40 years to see The Never Ending Story. Amazing animatronics, great child actors, and story is very meta, but maybe doesn’t stand up today.

Looks like one of the kids did a lot of his own stunts.

Does anyone have an IKEA SNURRAD?

I'm fascinated by the mechanism and I'm trying to grasp the geometry of what's actually going on. It's breaking my brain a bit.

It won't fit my fridge and I'd like to make something similar with #3dPrinting

in reply to Stephen Farrugia

based on the details here, it seems that the circular part has 8 rolling balls that follow 2 non circular tracks. The shape of these tracks control the movement forward and back, and the main spinning top panel rotates about a pin that fits in a linear channel, which moves during rotation due to the rolling balls following the tracks.
in reply to Kyle Davis

It almost seems like a double slider crank mechanism could do it?

It's BEYBLADE Day (3-2-1 Day), so @hasbro sent the new @officialbeyblade X Clash and Carry Beystadium Battle Arena along with their first-ever CX-line Tops (for free)! We always have fun battling at home, but now we can basically do it anywhere! #beyblade

Interesting to see AI fighting AI - only one losing the battle is humans. This might just be an unnecessary burden to society overall.
in reply to Ars Technica

I have conflicting feelings about this. On one side: fuck AI companies and abusive bots DDOSing random websites and git repos. On the other, there are now hundreds of thousands, if not millions of computers wasting energy for literally nothing. Some generating shit, and others eating it. A lot of expensive nothing

Ok, for my DNS question. 9.9.9.9 is the best answer I'm seeing, There's quite a few others, (thanks @martinlentink for the useful list). But quad 9 best replaces the easy of quad 8, or quad 1.

I managed to take this panoramic photo from inside the top of the Gateway Arch in St Louis in the limited 10 minutes we had. It's actually two different panoramas (one taken from each side) sloppily stitched together. I thought it looked neat with the view from the west on the left and the view from the east on the right. I'm sure this has been done, and likely much better, but I haven't been able to find it so far.

It's sad and we need to keep the pressure on. We also need to throw them out of office as soon as possible.

Scientists have announced that a dim star in a constellation easily visible after dark from the Northern Hemisphere is finally on the verge of exploding. The binary star system, called T Corona Borealis (TCrB), dramatically brightens approximately every 80 years and was last observed doing so in 1946, making it a once-in-a-lifetime event. It could become visible to the naked eye next week.

The parents of the unvaccinated 6-year-old girl in Texas who died of measles last month say they still do not encourage any parent to have children vaccinated. They maintain that getting measles builds the immune system and prevents cancer in future. They say that measles are not as bad as they're made out to be.
