Ok, for my DNS question. 9.9.9.9 is the best answer I'm seeing, There's quite a few others, (thanks @martinlentink for the useful list). But quad 9 best replaces the easy of quad 8, or quad 1.
Install bind9 on your system, yes they even have a version for windows. A setup for self hosting your DNS is rather simple. You can then configure your gateway to 127.0.0.1 (make sure named (bind9) is configured to listen on localhost).
This will speed up your dns resolution and cut out other people logging your lookups. This does not mean that your ISP will not know the sites you connect to if you are not using Tor or VPN.
If you are using GNU/Linux then you can install directly from your repo. If you are Windows then you can get a version from their site.
@unusnemo I'm a senior system admin that's been doing this since the last millennium. I've literally got over a quarter century experience of this. While I can and do already run my own DNS. I want an easy one that I can tell non tech friends to use to get them to stop using quad 8
Fair enough, I was not trying to be little you or your knowledge. I was just trying to help. Excuse me please if I insulted you in some way as it was not my intention to do so.

I am not surprised that there are issues there, I am wondering what I shoud look for.

But your point is well taken.
