I love posts like this because this is my daily life at work. Constantly looking at safety factors. Some of my coworkers (non-engineers) hate that we insist on applying safety factors or respecting published limits because “we’ve done it this way for years and never had a problem” when the reality is they were just lucky.

I’ve done a lot with Below-the-Hook lifting devices and the standards there are very explicit. The biggest lift I’ve designed for is 438 tons. Lots of thick plate.

@chrishuck It’s funny. For all the crane failures I’ve investigated over the years, very few have been for traveling bridge cranes. Maybe that’s because of people like you taking care of them.

Sketching new project. Inspired by the lilly of the valley plant, this will be a desk lamp. The green parts will be hand made from copper and then given a patina. The bells of the flower will be made of glass. The base marble and frosted glass that will backlight the marble.

The image depicts a crowded concert scene with a large audience in the foreground, illuminated by stage lights. In the foreground, a person's arm with visible hair is visible, and the text overlay humorously reads, "THAT MOMENT WHEN YOUR FRIEND'S HAIRY ARM LOOKS LIKE A CAT." The background features a stage with performers and a logo, suggesting a live music event. The atmosphere is lively, with the audience engaged and the stage brightly lit.

The image is a four-panel meme featuring two individuals in a formal setting, likely an office or meeting room. The first panel shows a man labeled "BOSS" handing a document to another man labeled ".NET DEVELOPER." The second panel focuses on the ".NET DEVELOPER," who is holding the document and looking at it with a concerned expression. The third panel shows a close-up of the document with the text "CAN YOU DEVELOP .COM AND .ORG SITES TOO?" written on it. The fourth panel shows the ".NET DEVELOPER" looking at the camera with a puzzled expression. The background is consistent across all panels, featuring blue curtains and a patterned carpet. The meme humorously depicts a situation where a ".NET DEVELOPER" is asked to develop websites with different domain extensions, highlighting the specificity of their expertise.

I was lucky to be on such a wind turbine for my job interview at Germany's third-largest wind power plant manufacturing company!

Job application interviews can be amazing!

in reply to das_menschy

@das_menschy I am going to elect believing the interview had nothing to do with wind turbines and it was for something like a cubicle position somewhere else because it makes it 100 times funnier "we did the interview there just for fun"

Jokes apart, you have my complete and full envy.

in reply to Nixie

the interview was for an apprenticeship as electrician, who would also work at the top there.
in reply to das_menschy

But it was an "excuse" interview, the company f*cked up the first job interview (accidentally sent me a rejection) and wanted to offer a reward / an excuse for that, so they offered me this. 😃

A broken mirror frame on clearance inspired me to make this bronze Gastly decoration. I look forward to hanging it up every October 🎃

The Gastly is made of styrofoam and EVA foam. I was scared of weathering it, but the blue patina washes came out fantastic, despite the heavy-handed dry brushing afterward.

Since I made Haunter and Gastly projects, naturally I should do something with Gengar. But inspiration hasn't struck quite yet.

Thanks for this. Images like this fascinate me. The thought that they can shoot a camera with lots of vibration on launch then navigate it accurately and reliably to a fast moving rock zillions of miles away then take crystal-clear photos despite the low temperature and then get the photos safely back to earth boggles my mind.
