I went to Shetland Wool Week’s 10th Year & turned the hat patterns , one from each year, into a cowl. I was knitting it as I went and found yarn and chose colors for the final (and first hat pattern). I used ALL yarn from Shetland. Some from my stash. One of the hat patterns wasn’t an official one of SWW—it was Harriet’s Hat, raising money for an MRI scanner in Shetland.

I've said this many times and here I go again.
I fell in love with Fedi because when I come here I feel like I'm surrounded by legions of brilliant, creative, artsy and highly technical weirdos, all in the best possible way!
This place rekindled my heartfelt belief that the internet is beautiful and inspiring and that many of the dark patterns come from people grubbing for money.
Nothing wrong with money. Everybody's gotta eat and have a place to hang their hat. But MAN THERE HAS GOT TO BE MORE TO LIFE!
And this place is a constant reminder to me that there is.

I was FTPing folks files in 1990-91—book manuscripts to and from authors in Israel who couldn't receive couriers because the airports were closed for the Gulf War. Fun times.

in reply to ColesStreetPothole • • •I remember my first genuine e-commerce transaction. Someone clued me into this music store in the Netherlands that had a catalog you could shop via insecure telnet and it had all sorts of hard to find European discs.
I can't remember what my first purchase was, but I definitely remember my second one. It was a rare Brian May single he recorded for a Spider Man animated series in the UK. It came on vinyl screened with Todd MacFarlane Spider Man drawings.
That hidden telnet only music store lasted a few years before people buying stuff online over the WWW became common and then Napster came along to make the rarities I sought much less rare.
I'd remember running into random people in public who wanted a specific rare release & I'd give them step by step instructions to follow when they got home.
They could never return to that store again on their own, but they'd manage to get that one cherished item as if finding me that one day was some Zelda side quest.

in reply to ColesStreetPothole • • •oh I know! The only music I made real effort to download were rare bootleg tracks. Anything else was too much trouble. If I liked something, I just went out and bought it on my way back home from work the next day.
My entire collection of Tom Waits bootleg concert recordings came via Napster. 1998 and 1999 was such a fun time to be alive.
