The Royal Arcade in Worthing. I love #Victorian arcades and will always photograph them.

Photo 3/24 of my "Reclaiming Worthing" series. My brother and I took my mother to Worthing for a wonderful weekend away shortly before she passed away. I want to remember the love and beauty of that weekend

@Christian Wolff @HyperSoop ‮ there is no best DE or WM just the DE or WM that is best for you, we all work differently.

That is what is so great about GNU/Linux, there are choices, you do not have to use what everyone else does.

There is an optional feature on Mastodon which lets you automatically delete your posts after a certain amount of time:

➡️ fedi.tips/deleting-posts-autom…

If you switch this on, your posts that are older than a certain number of weeks, months or years are automatically deleted by your server.

The setup process for autodelete also lets you choose types of post or specific posts not to delete.

(If you want to keep everything, just don't switch it on 🙂 )

Sure, because promoting a taxpayer-backed cryptocurrency reserve is a great idea. The Grifter in Chief is at it again, tackling our most pressing societal issues.

And then you have Musk calling the Social Security Administration a giant Ponzi scheme. THIS is the definition of a Ponzi scheme.

Guess Trump's crypto supporters just needed him to juice the market a bit. Cool cool.

Yesterday I figured I'd try setting up something I could use to work with my critique group. I was looking for collaborative editing, chat, etc. Nextcloud looked like a good candidate, so I gave it a go.

Well, Nextcloud is obviously designed to be an enterprise solution. That thing repeatedly hammered my poor little VPS into the ground on the simplest of operations. I took it out and restored Mattermost, which is great for chatting with a curated group and some other Slack-like tasks, but doesn't support collaborative editing.

The search continues.

Sometimes the question comes up if we have any DNS servers to point at. The answer is no, we only do authoritative DNS (for now anyways :neocat_3c:).

There are multiple other projects that do recursive DNS in the EU or based out of the EU though, like
- quad9.net (@quad9dns)
- mullvad.net/en/help/dns-over-h… (@mullvadnet)
- stats.ffmuc.net/d/tlvoghcZk/do… (@freifunkMUC)
- digitalcourage.de/support/zens… (website in German, @digitalcourage)

european-alternatives.eu/alter… also has some more

We all need a bit o' peace and quiet.

ENDLICH sehen wir Proteste von US-Amerikanern gegen die MAGA Regierung

Dann ist doch noch Hoffnung da!!!

in reply to Attac Ostfriesland

@Attac_Norden

I just went down a bit of a rabbithole starting on YouTube, and I'm currently asking ChatGPT about the same thing. I use the same Google account to log into both. When YouTube starts recommending me more videos related to that, which inevitably it's about to, where is it getting that data from: itself or ChatGPT? 🤔

#Google #YouTube #ChatGPT #AI #Data

in reply to Old Man in the Shoe

OpenAI can be selling all your data to advertising companies like Google to make some extra bucks. Especially when this data doesn't enhance chatgpt's competition.

I dunno if that's the case though.

in reply to Day Use X Mockin' Uh

@Christian Wolff Download Ollama and some some LLMs and then your chats will be local and no one can share them besides you. Ollama can work on just CPU and does not require an expensive GPU. It is free and open source.

gnome 47 is so beautiful with the new accent color thing
in reply to jade

@jade It is funny, when Gnome was initially released in 1999 as an Open Source Alternative to KDE (which had just released in 1998) I was not impressed. It was lack luster and was missing a lot of features that I thought I wanted. Later on I decided that having all those features I never used was not so great. I have been using Gnome as my preferred Desktop Environment for decades now. I have tried many others and really am not impressed. I am not likely to change DE anytime soon.

If you dislike the state of Firefox, please recognize that part of the way it got there was by becoming dependent on the gravy train from Google.

It will still be years before it’s usable, but one thing you could consider is to help fund servo.org — it’s a fully independent rendering engine with some really great next-generation tech that is going to make the web a more secure, and a very large % of its contributor base comes from a worker cooperative’s members who happen to be some of the finest minds in browser technology.

The project is flourishing, and you can help it continue to chug along and even accelerate. There’s no telling if it’ll definitely become a full alternative to the current triad of chrome/safari/firefox, but we won’t find out if we don’t try. The future is what we make it.

I’m still sad Servo got dropped by Firefox. I understand why, but it’s the first genuinely innovative browser engine we’ve had in a long time
in reply to Nicky McCurdy

@nickm Firefox used several components developed in Servo and Servo uses several components developed in Firefox. The two projects have very significant co-dependencies

A few weeks back I was complaining about this meme and we had a good discussion about it on here. I ended up making a lesson plan about taxes and my students really liked it so I will share it. (It is for students with a basic understanding of integration. But, you could probably rework it to skip that bit.)

Speaking as a person who has filed her own (complicated) taxes for years, your tax lesson is brilliant! You make understanding the US tax tables and tax system very clear. The lesson also answers the question, “Why do I need to learn math?”.
in reply to myrmepropagandist

@gizmomathboy

When I was in the sixth grade (the 70’s) I literally had to take a class called “life skills”.

It was a year long course but you rotated every six weeks to a new “skill” class.

Examples: Home ec, finance, small engine repair, health, etc…

And, naturally… since “it was good enough for us”…

Well, actually, I think something like that really should be done these days.

(In this case it could be covered in the finance section)
