A second German tourist was held in a detention centre after having his Visa revoked by the U.S.

Sielaff is back in Germany after being held for two weeks without cause or explanation.

Jessica Brösche, a German tattoo artist who spent 8 days in solitary confinement without a pillow or a blanket, is still being held. She’s been detained for six weeks.

The U.S. is not a safe place to travel anymore.

Vote with your dollars (and your feet!) and go literally anywhere else.

This is especially applicable to my fellow Canadians. Don’t risk your freedom or support the economy of a country whose leader is threatening to annex us.

I followed closely the various ways that Trump threatened judges, juries, witnesses & people who were his critics in government. I learned that the FBI has an entire process for dealing with witness intimidation, as well as jury tampering. There were multiple incidences where they could've charged people with crimes, but didn't.

Have you had that "Upcoming price change for your Microsoft 365 subscription" email yet? They want to charge you an extra 50%ish for AI features, and they do *not* make it easy to find the way to turn it off. It took me minutes of searching - this is a particularly evil dark pattern.

"Switch plan" just lets you pick between annual and monthly billing. You want "Turn off recurring billing" and then "Current subscription without AI".

You're welcome. Please boost for others.

in reply to Laffy

Polygraphs are a perfect characterization of what this is all about. Anybody with an ounce of critical thinking and basic science background knows they can't possibly tell if someone is lying. And that's not the point. They're not to test if you're lying but to test if you're willing to go along with the lie that an authority can test if you're lying.
in reply to Laffy

The polygraph doesn't need to work for the process to be intimidating, which is probably the main goal here. In fact, punishing people randomly is likely just as effective at deterring leaks.

I used to marvel at the observational powers of some writers. To a great extent I still do. I am, somewhat unwillingly beginning to understand that this comes with the craft. I will offer an example.

Pre-writing me: Hey, look, they have a battery charger plugged into that power bar.

Writing me: A battery charger in their power bar. Interesting. I wonder why they chose this location. Did the charger come first and then get moved to accommodate the power bar? Is this a location central to what they use the batteries for? There's a little dust on the charger. Has the intended use been abandoned? Was there a project that needed rechargeable batteries that has now been left to rot? How did the success or failure of that project affect these people? Did it cause a conflict and if so was it resolved? And OMG stop already!

While this is undeniably useful for crafting a story, I am beginning to think this skill might be as much a curse as a blessing.

Last month, during #ElonMusk’s appearance at CPAC, as he hoisted a #chainsaw in the air, stumbled over some of his words, & questioned whether there was really gold stored in Fort Knox, people on his social-media platform…started posting about #ketamine.

#Musk has said he uses ketamine regularly, so for the past couple of years, public speculation has persisted about how much he takes, whether he’s currently high, or how it might affect his behavior.

Excessive use of the drug can make anyone feel like they rule the world.

in reply to Nonilex

#Ketamine is…a dissociative drug…during a high, which lasts ~1hr, people might feel detached from their body, their emotions, or the passage of time. Frequent, heavy recreational use—say, several times a week—has been linked to cognitive effects that last beyond the high, including impaired memory, delusional thinking, superstitious beliefs, & a sense of specialness & importance.
[it is also used in small doses under controlled conditions as a treatment for chronic MDD]

So it turns out the geniuses over at Bluesky trust the client app to fetch, and honestly report, webpage metadata for preview cards, so with a little tinkering in the debug tools you can post whatever news stories you like and they look exactly the same as real ones.

tbf that's somewhat minor?

I mean that client is just sending arbitrary posts as well and you could just send wrong URLs that don't fit the text.

idk why you would ever do it that way, but i've seen worse.

in reply to Cegorach

@dat couldn't this be fixed by the server digitally signing the card metadata so that it can't be modified? If the card metadata is sent back modified, the sighash breaks and the server should reject the post.
in reply to ikeacurtains

@ikeacurtains @dat it could, but it sounds like bluesky don't want to do that kind of solution because "the server" could be anyone. you know, because bluesky is """decentralised"""

This is why Mastodon has the collective DDoS orbital death laser, because every instance does this individually on the server when a link rolls in. Would be nice if there were a happy medium for this

@lmorchard I mean there is, though, if you're BlueSky, because BlueSky is not in fact decentralised, so they could just fetch the image themselves instead of letting me do it

Yeah, that's true, they can avoid being a thundering herd if they're just one critter
in reply to Les Orchard

@lmorchard Mastodon could also do better than this, since Mastodon is not a zero trust environment. Mastodon is a system which is largely *made of* mechanisms for rating actors according to levels of trust! Servers could easily configure "well, mastodon.social, THEM I trust to generate accurate preview cards, but racistfurries.club we don't trust so I'll generate my own"

I just figured out the ending of one of my WIPs. Of course, that just means I have another 50k words to write to complete the novel. I may actually have some backing to let me complete that, too. It feels weird that I'm completing a novel that happens in the middle of my timeline, instead of providing a proper starting point for readers, but then I suppose that it really doesn't matter as I have no idea how the beginning gets to this middle point, specifically. I mean, I do, but there are significant gaps that need to be filled in before I can consider the starting novel a complete work. And before all that, I have to figure out how to get published.

The memo still hasn’t made it to everyone about the systemic function of the #TeslaTakedown protests. I still keep getting well-meaning quesitons like the one below from @tymwol.

The purpose is •not• just to register symbolic discontent. The purpose is •not• just to take individual action that directly harms Musk.

The purpose is to tank demand for Tesla’s product, and thus tank their stock price. This is Musk’s biggest vulnerability, Smaug’s exposed belly.

1/ hachyderm.io/@tymwol/114111199…

in reply to Paul Cantrell

- Make the Tesla brand a PRACTICAL LIABILITY: maybe you don’t feel bad about buying one, but…people vandalize them, and so many people are getting rid of them that the resale value is going to be crap for a long time. Owning one is a headache, and you’re going to lose a lot of money on it.

(I get a lot of replies to the effect of “How does it hurt Musk to get rid of a car you already bought??” Get your systems thinking hat on! A supply glut in the used market both creates downward price pressure on new cars •and• changes people’s financial expectations when buying a new one.)

4/

in reply to Paul Cantrell

- Make the Tesla brand FRIGHTENING: They surveil you. They trap you inside. They burn people alive on a regular basis. They’re extremely vulnerable to hacking, even more than other modern cars with OTA software updates. One of these days, some hacker is going to make every Tesla in the country drive through its garage door…or worse. Driving a Tesla puts you in danger.

(This isn’t just logical; it’s visceral. Bombard people with images of Teslas vandalized, smashed, on fire. Make it a Pavlovian reaction: Tesla = danger, chaos, destruction.)

Quick checklist for #TeslaTakedown action:

- Does it make Teslas socially toxic?
- Does it make Tesla a practical liability?
- Does it make Teslas feel dangerous?

Any or all = good.

Do not underestimate the power of brand death over consumers and investors. The brand is already associated with fascism. Amplify that. Judo it. Take them town.

the vast majority of our digital equipment and infrastructure has similar issues. sure your smartphone won't run anyone over, but malware, account hacks or google turning your location data over to the cops can be devastating. Zuckerberg, Sundar, Bezos and the AIbros among others are very cozy with the new regime
in reply to Paul Cantrell

> They burn people alive on a regular basis.

They also poison people around with hydrogen fluoride when they burn. This is why using fire to vandalize them is a horrifying idea.

Yes this also implies that if they catch fire in one's garage for no reason whatsoever, one can *still* end-up with crippling long-term problems from the fumes.

Those things should never have been allowed in residential or public areas.

in reply to LisPi

@lispi314
I’m not thrilled about vehicle fires either — they’re dangerous, wasteful, and (as you say) toxic — but I’m also mindful of the context here. We’re fighting a group of fascists attempting to end democracy. The potential social and environmental damage of •that•, the sheer quantity of suffering, is so many orders of magnitude larger than a few dozen vehicle fires…well, not saying it makes vehicle fires OK or harmless, but I want to make sure that I’m responding to these two things in a way that is proportional to the harm and keeps the larger context in mind.

Like…imagine somebody set a Nazi truck on fire in Germany in 1934. How would we feel about that in hindsight? Is the (very real) air pollution what would stand out to us?

Maybe you’re on the same page about all that already. I just feel like it needs saying.
