Whole genome study on ancient First Americans suggests the ancestors of Indigenous people today came after the Last Glacial Maximum (20-14 KA). Humans may have come before 25 KA (possibly at White Sands, 23 KA) but either have no descendants today, or none have been found.

It will always be a mystery to me why they are referred to as Indigenous when they clearly are not, by the very fact that they migrated to the America in the first place. The word Indigenous means originating naturally in a particular place, rather than arriving from somewhere else. Unless we are talking about people? Then it means Refers to the earliest known inhabitants of a region, especially groups who lived there before colonization or state expansion (such as Native Americans or First Nations) in my opine this definition was merely tacked on to correct an err made centuries ago, so life goes. Yet we already have perfectly fine word for that which is Aboriginal which means relating to the original or earliest known inhabitants, plants, or animals of a place. So we totally twist the meaning of a word for a special case and ignore a perfectly good word that literally means what we are trying to say with our twisted connotation. Sorry for the rant. I have no idea why this bothers me. ;-) Good share though, interesting article.
