not sure if this is what you mean, but I think about βcultural eddiesβ all the time. Small, localized ways of being or doing that may not be obvious or apparent outside the eddy. One example is hobbyists that do something together and build their own community with distinct culture. Very fun to stumble into!
The conference I went to really reinforced that there are a ton of people who care and actually do the work to make our communities a better place. I'm sure it inspired more people to do more too!
a few years ago we were out for a drive and came across a huge festival of machines at a historic farmstead. People camping, displaying their engines, giving rides in ginormous dump trucks, selling parts. It was an annual three day event. Hundreds of people, speaking a common language, sharing info and enthusiasm. Ham radio people have events and community/culture like this too. @ai6yr may be able to comment more. These are just IRL examples.
Yes, ham radio has these... there are a lot of these in the middle class world around hobbies, mostly retired older folks. But I am aware of local work to do one of these for "community care" and among social justice folks locally too.
Hmm. My mind initially and immediately paired βcultureβ with βartsβ. So my answer would have been talking with some folks about a concert experience this morning. But then it went to the kind of cultural priorities that result in car-centric cities and the imposed need to drive. Those conversations I have regularly in the context of working on @CyclingGuide
And these are just two that came to mind in the moments after I read your post π
@uxmark I love that! There are so many aspects and nuances to cultural overlaps between different groups, but none of it exists in the absence of everything else.
@May Likes Toronto Culture goes well beyond the arts, though. I once got into an argument with a militant over the state of the city of New York City as one prominent case in this point. While domineering whitefolk created ghettos and barrios while planning their cities, over time they became the celebration of national culture for the most part untouched by those selfsame white bigots. New York society? No such thing--it's a kaleidoscope of cultures.
@claralistensprechen5th Absolutely. I always think of the definition of arts = culture, especially high budget art, as something that's defined by and for the wealthy/mainstream.
Art is what's created through the culture that's lived by the people. Sometimes it gets turned into something rich people consume.
