My understanding is that Brazil, India, and China are doing a similar thing with visas... quite expensive, but valid for ten years. I'm talking the $150 to $190 price range.
Long ago I visited India... $30 at the time for a 90 day visa. India was the roughest culture shock place I ever visited. Tough stuff if you're in the tourist areas, but mellow outside that bubble. I'd like to visit north and south areas I didn't see.

Did a 30-day visa for China... but it was before the ten-year deal. Like 'Murica and Australia, it's a huge country, so still much to see there. I'm definitely glad I hit Tibet, which I still consider its own country, no matter what China says.
Brazil? Never been there. I can definitely see two trips, if it's a ten-year visa, so I can pop into neighboring countries each time as side avenue travel.

Visitors can only see the capital of Tibet, Lhasa, without a guide. The rest (at least at that time) had to be guided. Great experience... and holy ELEVATION sickness for the first couple days.
But sadly for the Tibeteans, lots of relocation of Chinese there... monk spies... surveillance on all street corners in Lhasa.
