in reply to neopolitan

@neopolitan @Wiz Everything you know about b2b sales is wrong. It's not about sales. It's not even about businesses or b2b.

Want to know what it's about?

It's about the invisible thread connecting two human beings in a moment of authentic vulnerability.

When you strip away the transactions, the contracts, the quarterly targets—what remains? Trust. Presence. The courage to show up as your whole self instead of your "professional persona."

I spent 15 years in sales before I realized: every deal I won was because someone felt seen. Not sold to. Seen.

The companies that will own the next decade aren't optimizing conversion funnels. They're creating spaces where the person on the other end of the call feels like they matter—that their problems aren't a line item on a spreadsheet.

B2B isn't business-to-business anymore. It's human-to-human. It always was. We just forgot.

The question isn't "how do I close more deals?" It's "how do I show up with such radical authenticity that people want to build something with me?"

When you lead with that energy, the deals close themselves.

@sendpaws @zer0unplanned some random overseas recruiter recently tried to connect to me and offer me an amazing opportunity based on my skills. I had a chance to take part in a project to improve how LLMs generate open source code...
in reply to polprog68k

@gorplop @sendpaws @zer0unplanned I got hit up by a recruiter for one of those last year. And it's like, "Well, first you'll interview with a goddamn clanker, then you get to spend all your goddamn time writing unit tests for clankers." Unit tests are the part people slack on because it's not fun: why is the clanker not writing unit tests and the human gets to do the fun part?

@rees @Inginsub @phnt @mischievoustomato :blobcatnerd: that's an neat reframe, but i'm going to push back on that.

why this works
- if you have an autonomous boat + criminals + international law isn't enforced + you send everyone to a barren wasteland then the number of criminals is sure to go down. that's not weird sociopathic reasoning, you're just pattern-matching.

what still needs fixing
- you're a fucking terrible person

That's a good place to leave it.

@Death Back when they let you endorse people for random skills, coworkers used to endorse me for random things related to my extemporaneous rants in the break room. (I still have the endorsements for "Keyboards" and "Metal Gear Solid".)

But that was hog-era thinking. We now live in a post-hog world. (They will all be blown off.)

In my former life, I spend a few years working for a Contacting company - we were expensive and only hired real talent. Rigorous testing for anyone before the job interview even took place. We were expensive as f*ck. Gen-X owner. Nobody took our bids on RFP's seriously.

Never once saw one of our bids on a project get picked up by the big boys or state government.

Not once. They scoffed.

"We can hire 30 people from Palmer group for that!!!"
- 64 Year Old Boomer Department Head

(Palmer Group was a well known Jeet-Farm).

We were rolling in money, despite having never, once ever won a bid.

Our job was to show up after the "cheap labor" created a four-alarm fire, and fix it.

And we charged those same 64 year old fat boomers through the nose to do it.

They'd rather pay twice - once for a shit job and then a premium to fix it - than just pay people to do good work up front.

I say it again: Fucking boomers.

@SilverDeth @npc @phnt Ha, NICE.

Snowden just ended up depressing me. All that shit happened and the response was "Make them promise (again) to stop doing that (again)" and like...cracka I was at AT&T, I heard about the goddamn "Ha, so the government installs these boxes, we have to split and feed the fiber-optic cables to a different cage that we're not allowed inside, isn't that *weird*?" before the "warrantless wiretapping" scandal dropped and they were already building PRISM before that hit the news, like, every single time it's the same shit, how are people this fucking gullible? Very upset. Not Snowden's fault, but still, like...for a few years, just thinking about Snowden would depress me.

Was one of many things to dispel the myth that people will "wake up" if presented the facts in a clean consistent manner.

Turns out they won't wake up, they'd prefer to play silly mind-games with themselves rather than look at the overwhelming evidence that the world is not as rosy as they would like to imagine. Because the implications of facing it are too stwessfuw for them.

Cowardice.

tariffs, abandonment vs Russia (we're working on fixing this one), causing a war in middle east, cutting off golden parts for licensed production of US weapons, cutting off spare parts for weapons we purchased from US, embargo on space launches, embargo on integrated circuits, blockading our ports...

@cjd @wolf480pl @phnt @SilverDeth @npc @mrsaturday @sun For that you have to thank Germany and Erdogan, who uses his borders as a valve whenever he wants something that his NATO "allies" don't want to give him. I know which side of that the State Department is on but Europe's doing that to itself.

Anyway, mass importations are about as disastrous as any other top-down Malthusian nihilist technocrat strategy; that's different from a race thing, you know, Springfield, OH, had 40,000 people and someone at the state department made a deal with the governor of Ohio and then the near-retirement mayor made a deal with the governor and suddenly the population of that town was 60,000, including 20,000 Haitians. A big enough city can absorb that but this was not the case. So the "but they're eating cats" story gets seeded, then anyone that says "Wait, this is kind of weird. These people, because of a decision made in DC, have almost overnight lost the place they have lived their whole lives." and that gets lumped in with the cat thing.

"Bretton Woods" is what you're looking for. Rockefeller, Roosevelt, Bernays, Dulles. The start was French Positivism, which came from the French Revolution, which was so successful at producing democracy that they ended up with an emperor (though with a few detours like putting :lavoisier: in a guillotine). You can draw a very thick line from utilitarianism through French Positivism to "scientific governance" to the current technocratic Malthusian nihilism, which cemented its roots in Bretton Woods and then in the 1990s they finally won.

Are you talking about that thing that started in the 1970s under Carter and then Reagan's amnesty bill in the 80s and that accelerated sharply in the 90s when we got the former director of the CIA as president from 1989 to 1993, then the banks directly got to hand-pick the president that tirelessly delivered them bill after bill from 1993 to 2001? NAFTA? How's that coincide with something that happened in 2015 (though closer to 2012 as I recall)?

So, why do the BND and BMBF hate fedi? Same shit as the Kentler Project, you're seeing a tree instead of the organization that planted the orchard.

> exonerates Erdogan

The man basically says "We want some more missiles and jets and if not, we really can't hold back all of these while we're distracted." Then whoever is in charge of Germany says "Oh, no, we're going to take a million of them and then we're gonna freedom-of-movement them at you unless you take enough of them. By the way, your EU votes are worth less than garbage because we run that shit, also."

I'm not pretending the CIA and the banks are not pushing policy but fuck's sake, there is no exonerating Erdogan, and for that matter, Germany.

We do that because you hand us the keys. There'd be far less if far fewer people handed over the keys.

in reply to Wolf480pl

Hey Wolf, long time no chat!

Well, the really obvious immediate point here is that running around like a conspiracy theorist saying "the people gotta wake up" is nah guh work. So that one can be written off...

If you're trying to move the Overton Window, one point is you shift the conversation away from "people wake up" to "people are fucking worthless cowards" because then it creates a social stratification with the cowards getting made fun of. Now everybody knows what they want to NOT emulate.

Then on the other side, you might decide you are NOT going to worry about the 99%, you're going to worry about creating a lever for the 1% who have the capability to pull it. This is really where stuff like Bitcoin fits in.

Both are (obviously) happening as we speak...

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

The media in this post is not displayed to visitors. To view it, please go to the original post.

Now there's a different question:
Everybody has woken up, now what? What can anybody actually do?

Well, there's approximately 50,000 suicides in the US per year - IRS workforce is something like 100,000 employees.

If everybody takes out just one tax goon before they go, it takes 2 years to wipe out the IRS by pure war of attrition. Assuming zero resignations which is NOT what will happen.

So yea, there's nothing anyone can do about anything except the easy switch, but you're not supposed to know about that because When You Kill Your Enemies They Win, or something...

in reply to Wolf480pl

Well I (personally) moved to France about 12 years ago, so most of this does not apply to me. The French government (though not perfect) is not actively working to erase the French people...

But yes, in the US, the most bang for your buck is terrorism.

Actually you take like a small battery computer and package it in a tamper-proof 3d printed case with a few hundred grams of explosives and some fiber optic cable (because cutting fiber without detection is IMPOSSIBLE)... You rush somebody and drop the fiber loop around their neck, some mechanism synchs it up - you run away and the computer sits there telling them how long they have left to live and where to send Monero if they want to make it another day - AND, it asks them for wifi (time extension granted in exchange for wifi) and uploads the entire audio track of them whimpering and calling people to raise the money.

That's terrorism, that will trigger mass resignations overnight.

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

@cjd @phnt @SilverDeth @npc @wolf480pl @mrsaturday @sun you were ragging on me calling me a liar and scammer and that I was immoral for quoting bible verses at christians and here you are advocating for that americans should commit acts of terror
in reply to rees

If you respect somebody, you don't try to convince them of things that you yourself don't believe.

Regarding terrorism, I said it's the best bang-for-your-buck, and it is.

Voting has no effect, the people that took control of the US created enough rules, exceptions and loopholes to ensure that no legal process will ever actually challenge their power. So that leaves three options:
1. Leave (as I did) - I have not lived in the US for 12 years and I have no intention of going back
2. Just take it, accept that you're a slave, and pray that the system will care for your (if you're connected then maybe this will be okay)
3. Press the easy switch. Go back to the old game (violence), which the new game (politics) was created to replace, before the new game was rigged so that no one could ever win.

:globalistlocated: Lotta fluoride moving through the glowieverse. Welcome to Friday Hell. Hold onto your :manhattan3: while I poke the global surveillance bear. :terryno:

TL;DR: :glowing::glowinthedark::globalistlocated::plasticbottle::fluoride::drinkfluoride::manhattan3: INDEPENDENT FEDERATED TRUST AND SAFETY (but first I talk about mirroring for a couple of paragraphs)

A lot of the URLs can be mirrored to your instance locally and read/replied to/reposted on your instance without making you look at the glowie servers. Paste the URLs into the search bar, they'll show up on your instance. This should probably be easier in most FEs.⁰

:zerocool::acidburn::lordnikon: You know what's better than archive.today links? Mirroring the shit onto a few dozen fedi instances. You put, e.g., wedistribute.org/2025/02/iftas… into the search bar, it is mirrored to your instance. If you reply to it or repost it (or you are on Pleroma and you smash dat like), it is mirrored to instances where someone follows you. :phantomphreak::plague::cereal:

:glowing: IFTAS is making another push for centralizing fedi. IFTAS is a surveillance/steering organization that has enough overlap with Newsmast, the Social Web Foundation, Oliphant, FediMod, indieweb.social, hachyderm.io, that they are effectively the same organization. (Sockpuppets are bad when you're LITERALLY HARASSING JOURNALISTS but it is fine to use orgs as sockpuppets. These people spin up 501(c)(3)s faster than most of us spin up domains. The orgs are, not coincidentally, all based in .us/.de/.uk/.ca.) Here's who they are: about.iftas.org/advisory/ .

:glowinthedark: The organizations get government/corporate funding through organizations like nlnet or the Social Web Foudnation ( socialwebfoundation.org/2025/0… ) or the Ford Foundation through the DIIF. They use this sort of thing as a mechanism to pay themselves, so Newsmast "buys" indieweb.social from Tim Chambers ( timothychambers.net/2025/03/27… ), who was a member of IFTAS ( about.iftas.org/2024/07/12/tim… , "Tim has been at the forefront of pioneering strategies that leverage technology to promote social good and a healthier social web. [⋯] Tim’s deep understanding of the disinformation landscape further strengthens his value to the IFTAS Advisory Board." ). The Executive Director of IFTAS is employed by Newsmast and it should probably be really fuckin' easy to call this a conflict of interest. I don't know how much money they move like this: my concern is not with hustlers using tax dollars and "charitable" contributions to get paid for forcing their politics, you know, I don't like it but my main concern right now is that they are trying to kill fedi.

:threeletteragentglowsobright: IFTAS has recently been hand-wringing about the ratio of jannies to humans going and pushing the coop model. They've also been very interested in regulation, trotting out the "Oh, it's not the 'wild west' any more! You can't just write whatever you want on the *internet*!" See attached, and see the IFTAS founder's push: jaz.co.uk/2026/03/13/there-are… . Jaz-Michael King, head of IFTAS, incidentally, lists Newsmast as his employer. They are creating a fake problem to force their solution. This is part of the (also attached) broader strategy from the .us/.de/.uk/.ca governments to stamp out "misinformation" on fedi: the .de government refers to fedi as "The Hydra on the Web" and expresses frustration that they can't use NetzDG as a pretext to take down random Peertube instances. (They did indeed say the quiet part out loud and it's in the PDF.)

:glowing: IFTAS's "CSAM detector" (attachment scanner) "ran out of funding" right when the USAID faucet ran dry. ( wedistribute.org/2025/02/iftas… ) Before they did, they grabbed about 1.86M files from fedi: about.iftas.org/2025/03/27/con… . (In addition to things like requiring access to a server admin account for "CARIAD", cariad.fedicheck.iftas.org/ , a closed-source tool to show you something that fba.ryona.agency / fed.dembased.xyz will already show you, for free, with source, and without requiring you to give them access to read an admin account. Anyone wanna spend a minute spinning up a new instance and checking to see what requests they make exactly?) It's one thing for them to say "Oh, you're unsafe, you said a hate speech" but it's another *entirely* for them to say "You don't use the CSAM protection!" (I don't know about other admins, but speaking of USAID, very few pedos have been visible from here since that dried up. Either they finally, with extremely coincidental timing, realized that I put heads on pikes, or maybe there was not a coincidence.) This is gonna be the wedge. It's easy to say "I don't stop people from discussing their opinions, even if you don't like their opinions", but nobody on the network actually wants to host anyone's CP bin.

:glowinthedark: Oliphant's blocklist is dead now. "Note: As of April 15, 2026, the Oliphant Unified Tier 0 Blocklist has been retired. There are numerous instructions on this page to create your own, but we're moving to a more FIRES-centric model, and I want to support that going forward. Rather than combining various blocklists here, I'd prefer to forward FIRES datasets as a better alternative to sharing moderation advisories, as it is a living protocol." writer.oliphant.social/oliphan… . FIRES is a spinoff of the new Fedimod shit out of *Germany* because YSHL. It is done by IFTAS member Emilia Smith ( hachyderm.io/@thisismissem , github.com/thisismissem ), or at least she's running the Github org. It is worth noting who was on the Oliphant blocklist at "tier 0" from the beginning. (Say what you want about Seirdy but he's at least transparent about his notes.) FSE is always top of all of these goddamn lists, before they got arround to adding Pieville or Gab or whatever explicitly angry racist instances: why is that? (Well, why the fuck do you *think*?)

:threeletteragentglowsobright: So IFTAS builds these things, then conducts these polls: "Which do you want, this, this, or this?" All of the options are, of course, things they want to push; for example, "What if you had automated threat-sharing? What if you had an automated blocklist?" They give you four choices and all of the options are things they want to push, in some cases things they have already developed. When their 2026 needs assessment survey comes around, I suggest you take it. (There's probably some funding requirement that demands that they do a survey, so they do one to show that it's super important that they get funding; in either case, it's also a classic "manufacturing consent" maneuver, it is old as shit.)

:glowing: You may be familiar with Newsmast ( newsmastfoundation.org/about/ ). I had never heard of them until I wrote an MRF that automatically added #ukraine #russia #elonmusk #trump #uspol #putin #economy #antifa to every post on FSE; IDIFTL. ( git.freespeechextremist.com/gi… ) To my surprise, a series of bots started reposting everything on FSE. Even shit like @whereverbot and @lainbot. I also started getting scraped by backend.newsmast.org, which is looking for not just posts but tracking follower/following relationships. (Larger write-up fsebugoutzone.org/objects/377a… , media.freespeechextremist.com/… ). I wouldn't be surprised if the fedi "OSINT" scraper tool (remember the one that was like, "IT EXPOSES WHO TALKS TO WHO" and people just used it for fun instead of being terrified?) from a couple of years back was a prototype for this.

:glowinthedark: There are a lot of instances that are socks used by the IFTAS crowd. For example, the eleven instances¹ that were part of the Fediverse Governance paper ( github.com/fediverse-governanc… ) or instances where they don't even bother to change the links so their "About" page just links to Newsmast's "About" page: fsebugoutzone.org/objects/e67f… .

:terrywat: So I mention, like, "They aren't really against centralization. I took the survey they gave last year and the questions ranged from 'completely irrelevant' to 'insulting'; the main problem was that they were looking for a conclusion and the survey assumed the conclusion. That is, the survey existed to validate the thing they wanted to push. It was stuff like 'Do you suffer mental health problems because of unmoderated content?' and 'Would an automated blocking system help you block better?'" fsebugoutzone.org/notice/B33Gl… .

:terrylol2: Dots connected this week: the 2023 "Fediverse Governance" paper, IFTAS (Independent Federated Trust and Safety), Newsmast (the organization that is responsible for scraping fedi and also people's following/follower lists to build a social map of fedi), . I can't be the only one to have noticed these people are all the same group, but I have never heard anyone mention it: fsebugoutzone.org/notice/B5Ke0… . Jon Pincus, outspoken IFTAS tendril and member of the "Disinformation Defense League" (which wants a tax on targeted ad revenue to be earmarked for journos, I SHIT YOU NOT), has been bending cwebber's ear; cwebber's now on social.coop (which pulled in $20,000 per month last time I checked), one of the original eleven¹ instances that were part of the original fediverse governance paper (coauthored by Kissane ahead of the founding of IFTAS). A lot of these things that came out of nowhere, they were astroturfed by these people.

:threeletteragentglowsobright: Here's an example: why all the press about the "CSAM problem" on fedi, where did that come from? These people built a detector, they want to create demand for the detector, so they reach a few tendrils out.

:glowing: hachyderm.io is another great example of the astroturfing. They show up out of nowhere, have a bunch of tech celebrities on there, then the admin starts making these impassioned declarations about how fedi "needs to do $x" or "won't survive without $y".

:glowingthedark: cosocial.ca was the topic of this thread where phnt (I should tag people that were involved but I also think, like, maybe they will get spammed) posted this:

fluffytail.org/objects/caa22ad…

> The sleezy kind of freedom haters. They are too afraid of backlash that play these dumb masquerading games to look like "the good guys trying to save this network". Their goal is to just turn this place into another corporate Twatter place nobody asked for.

This is accurate. If you have noticed that these people get hostile and instance-block you if you ever question their premise (as happened in that thread when phnt asked some pretty obviously good-faith questions), this is because they are pushing an agenda. People interact with them and exclaim, "How annoying! He refused to explain what he meant, he instance-blocked me for asking why or questioning the approach!" They are trying to present "Choose the color of the bikeshed!" as a choice before you've agreed to let them build a house. The style of interaction is driven by the motives: you think you're talking to a person, but you are talking to an agenda.

They are trying to push an agenda. The agenda is to kill fedi by turning it into a centrally controlled system, these are the mechanics.

There, that's it, that's my tinfoil screed. No action item. Please see my recent posts/reposts over the last four days for more information.

⁰ FediBBS, you type a comma, like you just do `, $url`, but very few things are "easy" on FediBBS. I think, like, this should probably be done in a similar way to the thing I suggested to feld where it's just an object lookup and the frontend. Several of the repos mentioned here are mirrored to git.freespeechextremist.com/ now and I think revolver should probably include some kind of "import/mirror git repo" feature in v2, or anyway I have "git support" in there somewhere, so, like, while FediBBS can just do tarball upload, a server that can absorb git repos and let you clone from any node, that'd be cool; I did this with IPFS but IPFS is, as I have mentioned and you may have noticed, slow and terrible and shitty and unreliable and painful.

Hmm lets see, what is my opinion...

I think the American empire has become a net negative for almost everyone in the world. So I'm pro seeing it overthrown (even though it's probably gonna be super messy).

Weapons advancement is just another technological advancement, which I think is cool.

I like when victimized people are able to get vengeance against their oppressors, and right now they aren't really getting it - they just become depressed and commit suicide.

So, with recognition of the fact that some of the side-effects will be things that are categorically bad, I'm kind of in the "should" space here.

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

@cjd

I'd also add a bit of crisis bargaining theory here:

Politics is a negotiated settlement to avoid civil war. Any negotiated settlement must reflect the balance of power. If the ruling class screwed up so badly that a civil war has a better expected outcome for you than working within the political system does, then you fight.

If you don't have a red line beyond which you will fight, then you have zero bargaining power.

War is the default state. And because killing and dying sucks, people invented a game and swore that they would all follow the rules.

Well, that works until somebody starts cheating. When they start cheating, the only RATIONAL move is to say "okay, game's over, it's back to the old way again until everybody can remember why they agreed to follow the rules"

lowkey reminds me of a quote from a Polish 19th century theater comedy:

"Hej! Gerwazy! daj gwintówkę!

which means

"Hey! Jarvis! gimme the rifle!
I will pop that poppyhead!"

Ofc in the text where it comes from, it has nothing to do with removing scumbags from power, and everything to do with a neighbourly revenge, which the whole play makes fun of.

But since this is a hellthread anyway...

> Ok but like, what was actionable about these revelations? What could an average person have done?

Obviously, the answer is "just accept defeat and slide into complacency".

The reason the market is flooded with IoT shit packed to the brim with surveillance gear is that people keep buying it, because they don't care. Nobody makes a stink with their local PD for taking the Amazon Ring deal. Nobody stopped using hardware or software from any of these companies. "httpseverywhere" doesn't mean shit if these companies are on the other side of the cert.

But people went out of their way to shit on people that *did* care. Conspiracy theorists. "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide!" "Why do you love terrorists and pedophiles so much?!" "Don't you realize that law enforcement is 'going dark' and they need a Golden Key?" The "average person" went out of their goddamn way to encourage complacency and learned helplessness. The rallying cry was "Make them stop promising to do that!" and "Shut the fuck up about claiming the government could abuse things." It was the most limp-dick response anyone could come up with and there it was. People will boycott Disney over some culture war bullshit because a shitty movie *matters* and the goddamn psychopaths steering the goddamn country somehow *doesn't* matter: you're paranoid. If the "average person" had done *less* to shut down opposition, that would have been enough.

Most of the TLS cracking that the NSA does is done after the fact. They just dump *everything* and then put the cluster to brute-forcing it afterwards.

> Politicians are trying to make us busy fighting other ethnicities so that we don't unite to fight them.

Not quite...

They create multi-ethnic societies to break down social bonds so that people are easier to rule.

BUT, the thing "lets just all just unite against them", sadly, doesn't work. It's never worked in history. It's poison medicine, same as "vote harder".

If you want to "unite" against the politicians, what will actually work is gonna look a hell of a lot like Mafias and street gangs - which are 100% totally and completely ethnic. It's a bitter pill, but once they've managed to create a multi-ethnic society, they've already basically won.

> Blood runs thicker than water

There's an Arab saying, "My brother and myself against my cousin, my cousin and myself against the outsider." You go to Ireland and say "But the English are *white*" and see how many people you convince. Tell the Azov battalion that Russians are white.

"White" is broad enough to be meaningless. For one thing, it includes the Rockefellers, the Carnegies, the Vanderbilts, the Roosevelts.

It is, at any rate, a heuristic; it's a bad heuristic. I get along better with almost any other LA native (including the ones whose parents speak Spanish or Mandarin) than I would with a randomly selected New Hampshire or Vermont honkey. It's not true in every case (because it's a heuristic, not an absolute).

> Every mafia is ethnic

"Families tend to share gene pools." :senkoshock:

I think you mean they tend to share an ethnicity and cultural background because they tend to start as a family and the friends of that family.

Now there is actually a side-point to this: While ethnic groups are the only groups that will ever really project power for their members, that doesn't mean you need to get sucked into race warring...

You want to keep your eyes on the prize, which is seizing power. And in some cases you might find temporary alliances with other ethnic groups (i.e. Nations) can be had for mutual gain.

It's exactly the same dynamic as gangs in a prison...

in reply to pistolero

The fact that Mafia and Family are synonyms is just indicative of how important blood is to building trusted relationships.

> "White" is broad enough to be meaningless

You're hitting on something that is well known. Ethnic group boundaries are fuzzy and there are groups within groups.

This is why proposals like "deport the nons" never make it off the drawing board. They die of edge cases (half-breeds, and adopted, and "yeah but not him")...

But this doesn't mean ethnicity doesn't exist.

> I get along better with almost any other LA native

Well yeah... Social connection is obligatory. If you have to move a body, you're better off asking a black coworker than a twin brother separated at birth. But if those are your choices, you're probably going to jail.

The arabs got it right, if you need someone you can TRUST, you're looking for the closest social connection AND the closest family connection you can have. First brother, then cousin, then sub-ethnic group, then ethnic group, then race...

> The fact that Mafia and Family are synonyms is just indicative of how important blood is to building trusted relationships.

Well, that's a family, not an ethnicity. Your daughter marries someone, that person is now in the family. Noticing that a group of related people tend to share an ethnicity is looking at two symptoms with the same cause: parents, brothers, children, cousins, people you grew up with, people that raised you, people you raised. Watsisface's assertion, "I can't do anything meaningful because I can't hang a 'whites only' sign", is kind of absurd.

> But this doesn't mean ethnicity doesn't exist.

Nobody's said that. I did say it's a bad heuristic. The issue's fraught enough without introducing neolib taqiyya.

> First brother, then cousin, then sub-ethnic group, then ethnic group, then race...

My brother is an idiot. (Not that he's stupid, but he is an idiot.)

Hackers, then other autists, then countrymen, then nobody.

This is absolutely true, yes.

> ethnic cohesion, observable in the germanic and celtic tribes of (their) early bronze age

I mean, you also see them selling each other out to Romans a bit later. Tribal cohesion (that is, within Dunbar's number) is a distinct thing from ethnic cohesion.

> this is an understandable mistake/politically driven simplification

Just a regular simplification. You don't really distinguish what breed mixes a pack of wild dogs are, you just keep them away from your chickens. Sometimes it matters, you know, like whether it's a black bear or a grizzly, but the Roman military was more prestige-driven than anything: generals had a lot of latitude and you got to be a general by having enough money to hire an army, then it was largely about bringing home spoils, kings in cages, weird animals, expanding borders. So it was mostly that inter-tribal politics didn't matter much to the Romans. The US, right, we barely cared about which tribe was which except the people that lived in the frontiers. There were just the ones that integrated and the ones that shot arrows at people laying train tracks.

> It allowed fluid, and not borderless, but agreement based travel for trade and easy communication that looks a lot like people being of the same ethnic identity. it isn't.

Yeah, I think this is reasonable, but I'd qualify with "looked like to the extent the Romans cared to look".

@Suzu @phnt @SilverDeth @npc @wolf480pl @cjd @multiversal_gangstalker @mrsaturday @sun @rees it's important to note that people tend to simplify political powers hinging on keywords like ethnic identity to draw support for wars because it's actually important your warriors want to go to war as people being naturally driven to protect ethnic identity. there's a lot of what i'd call ethnic cohesion, observable in the germanic and celtic tribes of (their) early bronze age, where while there was fighting between blanket-termed people (blanket-termed externally by Roman sources, because tribes that got along and spoke similar (if not the same) tongues were passed off as the same people, and, I mean, this is an understandable mistake/politically driven simplification because if they're working together as a unified force against your empire, then..) and certainly feud history between families that determined splits, there were typically family/tribe-based relations, with oligarchic and upper class driven (I mean, obviously, if a family holds more riches, they can fund whatever they want, and grabbing that funding is very important.) kingdom-like structures coming later for some or co-existing (at a slightly smaller scale) for others. It allowed fluid, and not borderless, but agreement based travel for trade and easy communication that looks a lot like people being of the same ethnic identity. it isn't.

@SilverDeth @Suzu @cjd @mrsaturday @multiversal_gangstalker @npc @phnt @rees @sun @wolf480pl and like, if you time traveled to the middle of europe ~1000 BC and tried saying to some local chief that their family is the same as the family down the rhine, they'd straight up kill you, not even necessarily because they hate the guys down the rhine but because you're ignoring a bunch of important (some may even say very personal, like, on a familial level) history that makes this family and that family different. ethnicity is scientifically a thing but sociologically only a higher-level power grab. even now, just go to somewhere in bumfuck ireland and see how many fights you can start by pointing out one of the shepherds down the street has a wife from a family across the feud, and that it shouldn't matter because "you're both irish", we don't even have to leave a single ethnicity to realize ethnicity does not socially matter in the positive.

@Blurry Moon @:conga_parrot::conga_parrot::conga_parrot::conga_parrot:

@Wolf480pl @Phantasm @multiversal_gangstalker @Caleb James DeLisle @pistolero @Suzu @rees @SilverDeth @npc In science, a claim is only considered a "proven fact" or "reality" if it can be physically tested, measured, and verified by independent observers using modern technology. Because the stone is sacred and protected by a silver frame, no scientist has ever been allowed to take a sample or run a definitive test (like carbon dating or spectral analysis) to confirm it is a meteorite.

Therefore, when scientists say it is "speculation," they are not denying the Islamic history or calling it a lie; they are simply admitting that without physical testing, they cannot scientifically certify it as a meteorite. Many geologists actually lean towards it being agate or basalt based on visual inspection of the fragments, while others support the meteorite theory based on historical context and iridium levels in local sand.

The lack of scientific testing does not disprove the Islamic narrative; it simply means the scientific community cannot classify it as a confirmed meteorite without data.
The "true history" you refer to is preserved in Islamic texts and belief, which stands independently of scientific validation.

You really do not want to see the truth.

in reply to Plan-A̵̛͈̬̥̿͋̓͛̕

@Blurry Moon @:conga_parrot::conga_parrot::conga_parrot::conga_parrot: @Wolf480pl @Phantasm @multiversal_gangstalker @Caleb James DeLisle @pistolero @Suzu @rees @SilverDeth @npc
While there are strong theories and historical accounts supporting the idea that the Black Stone is a meteorite, there is currently no definitive scientific proof because the stone has never been analyzed with modern techniques.

The "proofs" often cited are actually hypotheses based on indirect evidence:

Iridium Levels: Geologists found high levels of iridium (a metal common in meteorites) in sand samples near the Kaaba, which supports the meteorite theory proposed by Paul Partsch in 1857.

Historical Accounts: Some records describe the stone floating in water (which would rule out dense rocks like basalt but fit with porous volcanic glass or pumice) and local legends of it "falling from the sky."

Visual Inspection: In 1974, scientists Robert Dietz and John McHone, along with an anonymous Arab geologist, examined the stone and observed diffusion banding, leading them to conclude it is likely agate (a terrestrial rock), not a meteorite.

Other analyses suggest it could be basalt or obsidian.

Because the stone is sacred, fragmented, and sealed in a silver frame, no scientist has ever been permitted to take a sample or perform non-destructive testing (like X-ray fluorescence) to confirm its composition.
Therefore, while the meteorite theory is popular and aligns with the tradition of it coming from "heaven," it remains a strong probability rather than a scientifically verified fact. The Islamic belief that it is from Paradise stands on faith, independent of geological classification.
