New Books!

I love new books. :-) Okay, It has been a while since I have done any web development. So I decided to get some new books to address changes in the last few years. Because, yes, in the last few years a lot has happened. I am hoping these books are solid. I will let you know. If you happen to be thinking of the irony of the choices of my two titles, I know, that is just how I process. ;-)

Yes, you do need JavaScript and no you do not ;-). This book is about getting away from taking a JavaScript first approach and using a CSS first approach and to fallback on JavaScript when it is needed. CSS has really grown up and a lot of stuff we used to do with less can now be done directly with CSS with no need for the transcoder at all. Many things we used to do with Jquery are now supported directly in HTML5 and CSS 3.0. JavaScript will continue to be an important conduit for communication from the browser to the server (think AJAX). Though we are getting away from using it to implement a WebUI. HTML and CSS are declarative and process much faster than the imperative JavaScript. It makes for leaner and faster loading pages and simplification of UI development. This is comparable to when we stopped using Tables to layout Web Pages and started using CSS.

This book was published this year and so far I am really liking it. Though I tend to read a lot at one time. I am also currently Studying Introduction to JavaScript Object Notation by Lindsay Bassett and ActivityPub By Evan Prodromou which are both available DRM free from ebooks.com I bought these other two dead tree copies (depicted in the image above) from Amazon.

I will also add that their are a lot of privacy advocates that like to surf with JavaScript disabled. So if you want to be accessible, and it is an option, then design the UI to best fit your intended audience's needs. With or without JavaScript.
