What happened?
More than a quarter of computer-programming jobs just vanished.
Learning to code was supposedly the salvation of millions of liberal art majors.
But now programming jobs are plummeting.

One major issue is that most programmers, are not. Today a lot of people learn Python, JavaScript or The Flavor of The Month an ecosystem and call themselves a programmer. With no knowledge of Algorithms & Data Sets, Software Architect, The Software Cycle, etc
If you only know a language or two and the tool chain used for development with those languages then yes, you may be a programmer. But you are on the bottom rung and easily replaceable. A Bachelor's Degree does not mean you are ready to start a career, that is why they call it a commencement and not a graduation. It means you are ready to start learning in your field.
People do not get this. Yes, there are many successful freelance developers that know only a few languages and are self taught. They may not even understand Algorithms and Data Sets. Though they either build their career doing small projects that lead to bigger parts or they develop a very specific project they market.

If you are expecting to work in development and not hope your pet project goes viral then you need to learn to program, not just use a specific language and framework. Be the one that develops the next framework. Not the one that is totally dependent on other developers frameworks. You can say no need to re-invent the wheel all you want. Seems like many manufactures have developed a billion dollar industry doing just that.
There will always be a need for entry level tier developers. Though if you want job security you need to move up. You, need to understand your field at more than a superficial level.
