I'm grateful for the recent changes in the moderation of Hashtags via Mastodon but I really wished it had a "filter" option in the dropdown, like "add to new or existing filter", mute hashtag, etc. Now that sports season is back and there are a thousand and one teams and more people are active, using team and game specific hashtags, it's gonna be hard to chase, esp when people don't use universal sport hashtags like #Football #Soccer #baseball #Rugby, etc along with their team or game specific tags. It is exciting to see sports growing in the Fediverse, though. #Mastodon #dev #MastoDev

I actually proposed this a while back

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

Seems that the "filter" option isn't currently able to be added due to jank with the way filters are implemented

@thisismissem I hope you don't mind the ping but it seems there's still interest in this feature

I just "thumbs up" the GitHub issue.

Slightly-off topic, I am the host of the example hashtag's nightly game that is in the issue and I always try to encourage people to use the universal tag so people don't have to filter each nightly game. I think since I started the one post per night nightly game in fall 2022, we have breached a half a million organic uses of that tag.

@jenbanim right, yeah, there's currently not "custom filters for hashtags", so we could only create a keyword filter for that, which leads to some weird behaviours

@thisismissem When I create "nag" filters, I always do so with "Hide with a warning" option because of the weird behaviors. I can see who the user is posting it and then decide if I want to "peek behind the curtain" at the content.

@jenbanim yeah, I've got to check with Renaud, but I think I can probably implement proper hashtag filters. I think I've a pretty good idea of how to.

The only big question is: what do we do able all the existing filters that are keyword filters for `#<something>`? Do we try to migrate those to hashtag filters? Leave them alone?

issue to track is: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

Yeah, Paul--I do post the nightly and the HashtagGames together but I do notice that other people do hashtag games too; filtering that will filter all of them, hm?
in reply to Radio Free Trumpistan

Mainly, people who filter that tag, don't want to see any of them. My ultimate dream is filter/add tags to a list and be able to hide the list from the home timeline but one of the main devs was against that. I'm almost ready to put out a cash bounty for a modification to that. It would make my experience so much better.

Major bummer, that.
I wouldn't have found out how fun it was without it coming across my newsfeed. It's also how I jumped in on Monsterdon, another barrel of fun.
in reply to Radio Free Trumpistan

Yeah. They annoy people for some reason. I'm not sure if it is the games themselves or because the timeline gets clogged and noisy in the evening with a battery of new game posts all at once

sorry I just used HashtagGames as a random example. I've had no issues with it and I appreciate you keeping the fediverse fun
in reply to jenbanim

@jenbanim I figured so. I took no offence or made assumptions, esp since you follow the main account, lol, but I used to get a lot of reports, some benign and some were vicious. Not so many now. It's a lot of noise for non-players.

It's exciting, too, to see all the organic posts. One post per night has created over half a million posts just since NOV 2022. I get baffled over it sometimes.🤭

in reply to Paul Chambers🚧

Yeah, I've currently got 79 items in my 'sports' filter. That includes a couple added recently.
in reply to Jason844

This is why I encourage people to use #HashTagGames along with the nightly game at @hashtaggames so people can filter it and not every new game.. It's a lot of noise for non-players.

@hashtaggames

Yeah, I know.

Early today I requested that someone add # USPol to one of their post. It was a YouTube video with the face of The Orange Turd. 🤮

If it continues, I unfollow and/or block.

There are 236 items in my 'US Politics' filters...

Occasionally, # HashTagGames collides with my one of my filters. So something has to get changed! 🤪

in reply to Jason844

@Jason844 That's why I hide "nag" filters behind a warning
