⚠️⚠️⚠️ Don't want to give your kid a polio vaccine?

Perhaps you don't know about the "iron lung" that patients had to live in 24/7, for weeks, months, a lifetime. A lot of folks don't know, for real.

Is that want you want? Because THIS - these mid-1950s photos - will be the consequence. No kidding. Had a friend who spent part of her childhood in one. Then leg braces.

Get the #polio #vaccine!!

It's freaking common sense! When I had my kid I made darned sure she got all her vaccines. No hesitations. I was shocked to learn they have a vaccine for chicken pox now...well, back in the early 2000s
in reply to Karen Strickholm

OH yes, very grateful. Losing a month of school when I got the chicken pox was no fun.
in reply to Karen Strickholm

As for pollio, like I said, yeah, sensible. Why would anyone deliberately want to set up their child for that, and why is it permitted?
in reply to Karen Strickholm

Kids with polio won't be in iron lungs.

No health insurance, no iron lungs.

See? Problem solved.

Paul Alexander, who contracted polio at age 7 before the vaccine was available, spent 72 YEARS in an iron lung. He died in 2024. 😔

@Barbramon1 I was just looking up articles about him. But he was one of the few that could live long and have a family and a career. There is no article about those that died long before they time.

His story is amazing, but those that didn’t survive is the story.

My point was that a man lived an existence that is unimaginable to the rest of us. There were others. Martha Mason, who lived 60 yrs in a lung and wrote an autobiography about surviving a terrible situation.
I grew up in an era where I was surrounded by people of all ages crippled by polio.
I am not romanticizing the survivors, far from it, but explaining how unchecked polio has had disastrous effects on individuals.
Please don't tell me what the story is. Thanks.

@Barbramon1 Ohh please don’t misunderstand me. What I fear is that some people will take his story and sell the lie that “He had a good life “
Sorry if you felt attacked. That was not my intention.

@mutter01 Doubt that anyone in a right mind would think that living inside a seven foot metal coffin for one's entire life is living a happy life.
As an older person I've been witness to the entire spectrum of harms done by polio, ranging from a slight limp to post polio syndrome decades after infection.
Polio rarely kill its victims, but can negatively affect their quality of life forever. Younger generations need to know what to expect if the disease is permitted to return.
in reply to Barbara Monaco

@Barbramon1 Sorry to tell you, but there is many people that isn’t in their right mind. They rather be Russian than democrats. They rather take a dewormer than medicine.
They rather watch their kids die “pure blood “ than give them a vaccine.

You trust people more than I do. And that’s great. Spreed the good energy.

@mutter01 No pollyanna here. I am a realist, and current statistics indicate that between 25-30% of Americans "strongly support" trump. Can't deny that there are a lot more fanatics and cretins in the US than I ever suspected. I consider them unreachable. It's good that we really don't need them. We are many, they are few.
I am categorically opposed to doomerism. It will sink us.

Now, now, don't scare them. Iron lungs haven't been used in decades.

They use intubation ventilators now. Their kids will look like Christopher Reeve, and who doesn't want to compare their child to Superman, right?

Republicans would put the welfare and lives of their children in jeopardy to own the libs. Incredible.

I met a man with polio at kindergarten. Maybe these idiots should have too.

I'd say refer people to the Candyland story but in these late stage capitalism days I'm afraid people won't take this as a cautionary tale; but as an opportunity to make money....

We recently lost the second to last remaining person living in an iron lung, Paul Alexander. He died after contracting Covid-19 and never fully recovering.

@uccawx I remember when they came to my school to vaccinate us all. It was a huge deal. I still have the mark from the shot. My friend Cheryl, a highly regarded interior designer, had polio. As an adult, she still had a problem with her leg, but never wanted to talk about it.

@Karen Strickholm
It would be true to form if MAGA wanted to make polio great again simply because it's another reason (one of many) to hate Franklin D. Roosevelt for. FDR founded the March of Dimes specifically to fight polio. Just don't mention to any of them that it's FDR's image that remains on the dime.

There's an Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode starring Brian Keith in an iron lung, and there's some nuances about doctor's directions on how best to use one, like taking some time out of the device to strengthen the rib cage muscles. It's Season 5 Episode 5, title "No Pain" and I've not been able to find an easy link to stream the thing without additional corporate guff. It's in Archive.org but not by itself, which added to the difficulty. I found the entirety of Season 5 on one page, discovered that it's selection 33 which ran Episode 5 (yeah, go figure), and THEN I got to the following link:

This is a really wonderful film about a man who lives in a iron lung who wants to have sex, lose his virginity. A sex therapist, played by Helen Hunt, is called in. This film is about that journey. Moving and funny, a great combo!
