Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition arrives on the Nintendo Switch with new gameplay mechanics, updated graphics, and a fresh story to delight new and returning fans. Here's our review: pcmag.com/reviews/xenoblade-ch…

Do you use Mastodon's web interface? Do you get frustrated when viewing a thread with content warnings because you have to open lots of CWs individually?

There is a solution to this problem: just click the eye 👁️ icon in the top right corner to toggle all the thread's CWs open or closed. (If it doesn't seem to work, click again. It's a toggle switch!)

More info and questions answered about this feature at:

in reply to Fedi.Tips

I just set it to auto-expand content warnings. The CWs usually match hashtags that I’ve explicitly subscribed to, so it’s a weird UI thing to say ‘at, you want to see things like this, I will hide the, for you, but only sometimes when the poster remembers’. Not tying CWs to hashtags was one of the biggest mistakes in the Mastodon design.
in reply to Fedi.Tips

I am very sorry, but while I LOVE the Fediverse I really HATE the web interfaces. Seriously!

A thing I've been thinking about a lot is how, whether, technology like computers and computer screens could be made "locally", i.e., within a limited area and without access to global trade in parts and minerals, even if you have to make drastic trade-offs to get there

in reply to Trantion

@trantion i'm actually very excited about this because a building on my block and, in a separate incident, the home of a close friend of mine have both been burned down by ebike batteries.

Oh gosh, sorry to hear that. Yeah, of course in the real world I do prefer technology that doesn't explode

My pet jumping spider made another appearance in the window by my desk, so i brought her another fly, and this time i got video of her hunting it.
in reply to Emily Velasco

I caught her four more flies today because she still seemed hungry, but they kept escaping from her. I caught her a pantry moth, too, but a smaller spider I was previously unaware of caught it before she could. Eventually I caught her a pantry moth that she caught.

That was a lot of hunting by me to feed her two bugs

It's not as hot today, so the flies are slower and easier to catch. I caught one for her quickly and she caught it easily. her first meal of the day

Don't forget to take her for a walk. She has a lot of legs to stretch.

@Lefty good thing with all those legs, they only half to walk as quarter as far as a human to get the same amount of exercise

#WIPWednesday: I have continued to work on that reproduction lace. I think the size is right now, but I don't have a measurement of the original.

This is 90/2 linen thread, but the thread is slubby and I'm not keen on it. Would like a nicer thread and will try to find better ones at the upcoming lace retreat.

(Embroidered baby cap just for scale of cap size for reference. Not my work, donated to our lace group.)

I'm getting to help design the set for our next play the the theater, Harvey.

The play happens entirely in a Victorian mansion and a mental hospital, but there is a lot of switching back and forth between them. That's a lot of scene changes, and a lot of work for the stage crew to do quickly over and over again.

So, I'm proposing a design like this where the major pieces of the set are double sided and can be rotated in place to show either their mansion side or their loony bin side.

Fingers crossed the producer and director go for it!

@michaelslade I think this idea bears consideration. Maybe Harvey could be an AI chatbot who you've decided is real and sentient

@the_spc in the winter they are almost completely white apart from a black line across their eyes. The male has a red wattle above his eyes. In the summer they have an intricate pattern of greys and browns that match the colours of the surrounding rocks and lichens. They are harder to see in the summer! Hope this helps.

I believe it is a good thing to be there and actually listen. Though do not expect immediate results. Healing takes time and you do not heal from years of trauma in a discussion. If we expect more than what is realistic then we could become jaded and believe we cannot help. This would be unfortunate.

Question for @FreeCAD users:

Right now, the only way I can find to re-orient a part or draft clone is to use Compounds or the KiCadStepUp addon workbench.

Is there really not an easier way to reset the origin of a part after placement?

I am trying to create clones so that I can export with proper part orientations. Part placement is not preserved on export and this KSU addon step seems like a needlessly complex process.

@3dprinting #3DPrinting #FreeCAD

in reply to amd

I have no idea… I don’t really know much about KiCadStepUp. I would have to play with it to try and understand what you want to do. Or, do you want to try to implement it?
in reply to Chris Huck

I’m not trying to put work on your plate. I just need to run a tool from that bench (or replicate its functionality) before export to reset the origin of the STEP file.

I’ll try and look at your code and the workbench code and see what I can come up with.

in reply to amd

I’m happy to take a look, I’m just unfamiliar. It might be easier than either of us think? 🤔
in reply to amd

Can you fill me in on what tool that you’re using in that workbench and what your ultimate goal is? Even though I don’t know anything about the workbench, I have been poking around looking for something that seems relevant to your description, but I’m not seeing it.
in reply to Chris Huck

I’m not at my workstation at the moment but I peeked at this and didn’t get too far.

I need the ResetPlacement tool from that bench (or an equivalent). github.com/easyw/kicadStepUpMo…

If I place a part clone in the correct orientation, then export using a manual export or lastSTEP, it doesn’t retain that orientation in the STEP file unless I run ResetPlacement.

Edit: deleted the last bit. I need to look at it on a real screen

This entry was edited (5 months ago)
in reply to amd

Thanks for the link to the code. It seems like I might be able to implement that function call and make it a checkbox option when you choose the file naming scheme. (With a note saying it requires the StepUp workbench)

I’ll have to play with it later this week as work travel will get in the way…

in reply to Chris Huck

I don’t think I can directly use the ResetPlacement function in the StepUpTools. It only allows you to have one object selected at a time. I thought I could trick it, but I can’t pass arguments to that function. It directly looks at the active selection and parses it. However, I might be able to just create a function in LastSTEP that I can pass a single selection object to, reset the placement, and then export it. Might be best to do it on clone objects? Would that help you?
in reply to Chris Huck

For my last model I cloned all the objects fixed their orientations. Ran ResetPlacement on each, then ran LastSTEP.

It’s not the end of the world, I can spend a few minutes on it to export.

Thanks for taking a look.

in reply to amd

So, you still have to manually reorient your parts to the desired printing orientation?
in reply to Chris Huck

yes. That’s not automated. You can make it a bit easier with the handy Manipulator workbench but it’s all still manually selected.
in reply to amd

Ok. I was thinking that you were looking for a way to automate the reorientation as part of the STEP export process. As I thought about it, I realized there would have to be a lot of assumptions made, which didn’t seem reasonable. Like, if you went back to the parent file and assumed that the modeling orientation was the same as the printing orientation, which isn’t always the case.
in reply to Chris Huck

ah. No. The problem I have is that if I do a placement to set the print orientation, the step export still assumes the original as modeled origin and the placement data is lost.

Using the kicad bench tool resets the local origin for the clone so that it exports with the orientation that I selected.

in reply to amd

Ok. I’m going to continue to investigate this, because I think it’s possible to “trick” the function into doing this for multiple selections even though the function can only technically do one at a time.
in reply to Chris Huck

In some independent methodology testing, I am able to select multiple bodies and make it run the ResetPlacement function on each body. Now, I just have to migrate that into LastSTEP…

I just wanted to let you know there is some hope.

in reply to Chris Huck

I uploaded a version that does the ResetPlacement on multiple bodies before exporting them to individual STEP files based on the naming scheme. Let me know if this does what you want.

github.com/chrishuck/LastSTEP/…

in reply to Chris Huck

I gave it a simple test, seems like it works great! I dumped all five of these models at once and they all came into OrcaSlicer with the correct orientation.
in reply to amd

Sweet!! I’ll have to make a few administrative edits to the code and update the README to make it official.

Glad I could help you out with this. I now see where it would be useful. Keep me posted if you run into any issues.
