It depends on the audience I'm writing to address. If they're as old as I am, they'll get the references because they share them. This is especially true if I'm lampooning something or someone in particular--it's my experiences by which I find what they're doing to be ridiculous.

I have every intention of watching both of them myself. They're plenty different.
I don't really think it is a conspiracy in a usual definition of the term. Since early 20th century when social democracy was in its infancy and capital went on the defensive, banks provided the ground for a federation of interests.
In Breton Woods states passed the authority into private banks to regulate the economy, including that of national debt. By the 80s banks had taken control of the states. Democracy is a facade and social democracy can not be reconstructed.
Also, since fascism was defeated in 1944 and was denounced, capitalists had to dress it up with different outfits
