I guess fickle propagation because of the way ActivityPub works is the price we pay for not having a secret Silicon Valley algorithm telling us what to look at!
This "friend that is me" feature sounds interesting. Is there any documentation on this? Would it be feasible to have many such accounts across the Fediverse, or isn't that what it is made for?

You can associate your accounts on as many instances as you want to. Though unless you are using those accounts it changes nothing. It is really made to echo what you say there here. So you do not have to multi post. Not all Friendica Instances have this feature turned on. I use it myself (or in theory thought I would though I am rarely on another Instance) so I have it turned on. It works on any Fedi platform, the other account does not need to a Friendica account.
As a new user you should still have the New User Tab available. Going to the online help is also useful.
