When I have to spell my username to people on the phone (it's also part of my email address), I usually follow it up with the explanation, "gryphon, the mythical animal, with a Z at the front because it was taken."
Recently I did that and got back the response, "Wait, gryphons aren't real?"

Well well well. You'll have to admit that the creature is quite popular.
Then again, with a surname of Griffin one can't dispute Merv's securing of the same as a trademark/logo....which he didn't have when he was mainly making records. See also "I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts"--not only a recording but also something of a music video you can find on YouTube. After Merv became the TV game show mogul, that's a creature one could see displayed after every single one of them. Perhaps an adoptive identity creature could be found (if you're not as averse to J.K. Rowling's works as most are, with good reason) by consulting "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them"
