I believe it is a good thing to be there and actually listen. Though do not expect immediate results. Healing takes time and you do not heal from years of trauma in a discussion. If we expect more than what is realistic then we could become jaded and believe we cannot help. This would be unfortunate.

I agree completely. Often times people say "It happened for a reason..." and they are right. Just not the reason they suppose. Confirmation Bias is extremely hard for us to get past even with the best of intentions.
