"This is nothing new. Operating on Tor for over 12 years, we knew going in that we would have infrastructure in xx-eyes countries and be subject to potential sniffing.

I'll let you in on a little secret. The time people spend obsessing about hiding from the government puts you in a de facto state of servitude to them. They do not require any form of operation psychological or physical space. Most people have created their own psyop.

If all of this bothers you, cut your fibre line and live in a cave."

I needed to read that, especially now and especially in light of recent events, and I cannot possibly be alone in that regard.

Using Tor just creates attention.

[Edit to clarify] I was not clear. I am referring to attention via traffic analysis.

Not really, I have been using Tor for around 20 years now and have gotten no attention at all because of it. I use it extensively for IoT and never once has anyone question why I was using Tor.

I would keep doing that if it works for you. The best approach for you is the one your comfortable with.

I do not care for the extra latency so I do not use a VPN on a Torrified connection.

I know how you feel. I am a developer and if I have to work on someone else's machine it leaves me without many of my tools. A lot of scripts and programs I have written that I use and never think about until they are not there 😉.

I agree, that is all I use Tor for too so I can completely identify with where you are coming from.

I have considered Dvorak for many years though at this point it would just aggravate my old arse 😉. I type very well on QWERTY so at 55 I am just not going to bother to retrain myself to type on another system even if it is more efficient.

This is true and by design. Keep in mind that Google, Meta and all the other Marketers that cannot steal our information when we use Tor feel like it is a good idea to Demonize Tor. The make sure to try to make people feel guilty for wanting their privacy.

I will keep that in mind as I have difficulties with my left hand because of nerve damage from when piece of rebar went through my shoulder in Pakistan. I may have to learn a new trick after all if it would be easier on my left hand as I do not for see the problem getting any better.

These days I develop software for my own needs and projects and for work I Audit and Load Trucks with a fork lift. I lost my credit and with that I lost my position as a Software Architect. I do not really care. I have different priorities these days than I did decades ago.

Do not get me wrong, I intend to correct my credit and get back into IT though for now the bills still have to be paid.

Though the Dark Web is not just on Tor, it is also on the clear net. Your average user does not even know what the Dark Web v Deep Web are and have no idea what part Tor plays in this. Though those that profit from our information want to demonize Tor be sure of that.

Even when I did work with other developers I never met any that believed that Tor was intrinsically bad. The people I worked with were educated and knew better. Most of them used Tor themselves.

The best way to get a lot of people to use Tor is to use it on Android.

The last time I tried this, it was horribly slow, likely because the phone is old and memory constrained.

Phones and Tablets are a lot faster today. You will find it far more acceptable. Though if true anonymity is an issue and you are not just evading telemetry then you should never use a mobile device at all. They have to many other vulnerabilities built in. Though this would not be an issue for the vast majority of us and is certainly not an issue for me.

Airplane mode will turn off networking which will kill Tor. Though you could turn off WiFi and use Tor on your mobile data. The reason why no Mobile device is safe for anonymity becomes apparent when you start looking at the Android Development Environment. A significant part of the processing requires a round trip to Google's Servers for lots of tasks. So any app could jeopardize your anonymity. The same with IOS this is why mobile devices are not recommended for anonymity.

For most of us this is a non-issue and will not effect us at all. Because we are just trying to avoid being tracked and all of the telemetry. We are not concerned with being truly anonymous or as anonymous as one can be on an international network.

@unusnemo
It may depend upon Android version or the OEM hacks.

I turn on Airplane Mode but still use WiFi.

Does not mean that this usage pattern will not be leaked to the mothership later though.
