I sent a message to my primary care provider to ask if I needed to worry that my left calf and ankle are swelling but not my right. She made me drive to town to show her. Now I have to get an ultrasound and an x-ray. I really need to find a new hobby other than going to the doctor. I am lucky to have a provider who cares, but maybe we could visit less often. She said she had seen me and my daughter protesting, and thanked us. Today, at lunch time we stood at our county courthouse to remind people to protest with us tomorrow. Who knows how long to go.

We just got back from UCLA where a ‘special’ specialist removed a tiny part of my wife’s body that was malfunctioning. Fortunately we all have 3 backups and UCLA wasn’t too far, the only other place in the country that has such people is in Florida.

@ELS Thanks, she is now doing quite well. The two surgeons that worked on her checked the calcium levels of her blood while she was still in the operating room after removing the malfunctioning gland and the calcium levels in her blood had already dropped by about 50%. They also checked the 3 remaining glands which were now putting calcium into her bones. Before calcium was being pulled out of her bones more rapidly by the bad gland. It was a weird situation.

Good luck with that diagnosis. I know the feeling. Virtually every week we have doctor visits or labs. But if that's what it takes, it's what we'll do.

@FiddleSix I have it elevated right now. It doesn't seen to make very much difference. I bought some compression socks but she asked me to wait until the tests are completed before wearing them. She will rule out a blood clot first and then I get an x-ray to see if I might have a barely broken bone. I do think the last couple of years has worn me out. I decided to postpone some of my more physical tasks today. I quit coffee a while ago but had a cup to see if a diuretic might help. I probably need a week off.
You probably do need a week off! And I can think of no one who deserves it more...
I have a bit of trouble with my left foot, have had for a few years. I saw a podiatrist and had it x-rayed today. I learned that one of the ankle bones had probably fractured a while ago, and is now disintegrating. The doctor is arranging for a CT scan, and will discuss next steps after that. She indicated that I might need to use an ankle brace.
I will be hoping that your ankle is not similarly afflicted!
@FiddleSix Oh my goodness. I am sorry. The doctor is concerned that I might be dealing with an injury, but I don't remember hurting it. I hope yours works out well. Foot issues are so complex. One of my husband's feet was crushed in an accident. It has never been the same, but he is able to walk normally

@mattblaze I had a similar idea for my business cards after changing jobs a few years ago; I was looking at a service slip for my truck and realized the spacing was narrow enough I could fit a bunch of lines on a business card.
This is great! I recently taught a group the basics of TCP/IP can the OSI model by using index cards they had to fill out and pass around, this makes it so much easier!
Years ago, as an April Fool’s Joke, I had little notepads made up of this. I handed them out to the neteng folks and said it was a new requirement from infosec to provide secure communication. Way not enough network engineers got the joke. Several went storming off to infosec in a tizzy, which was even funnier because they knew I was handing out the pads. 😀
I had some *really* bad shit happen to me as a child. Here’s an incomplete list of things those experiences didn’t make me do:

this one time i was on a tour of the MIT Media Lab and we got shown a project called the "food computer", some schmantzy hydroponics thing, and my friend and i were both a little... underwhelmed and definitely less than convinced. and then a couple years later it came out that the project was a fraud and a lot of times the plants they were "growing" in the thing were actually plants from the local home depot that they washed the dirt off of an plunked in the machine.
anyway moral of the story is Always Be Doubting Tech Bros
I once toured one of the "Hyperloop" companies around here, and they did a tour of their lab... and I was struck by how PRISTINE AND CLEAN the lab was. They had oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, soldering stations, etc. but NONE OF THE STUFF HAD BEEN USED (or if it had, it had all been put back like new). Great big flashing lights.... If anyone has EVER worked in ANY LAB, you know that it's never perfectly neat, that engineers don't unhook all their stuff when they go home or because "big investors" are coming for a lab visit, etc. etc.
@ai6yr a very long time ago I worked in a lab that was very much lived in. We had drain flies living in the radioactive waste bin. It was just tritium, but we joked that they were so hard to get rid of because they were mutants.

I've often felt that it's analogous to the gadgetbahn problem in urban transit: that anyone pitching mass transit to a city has to reinvent the train from first principles and call it something new. Trains are a well-understood technology and that understanding extends to the costs of installation. Therefore, if you want to charge more than that, your idea can't be trains, it has to be upside-down trains or some other reinvented gadget with enough obfuscation.
