...or the US is afraid those front-line countries may fall to Russia, and this is a move to reduce the amount of intel about US procedure, etc, that Russia would be able to easily gather from the fallen front-line countries...
Lots of ways to look at the situation...
When #Trump targeted #homeless people in DC with his #Illegal2BHomeless EO and the guards jumped in without hesitation, no one seems to care.
After almost 14 years on the streets AND being a #veteran, I swore to defend the US Constitution in 1990 and haven't stopped. No one else is standing up for homeless people but we now have the biggest target on our backs as ever. Every day, I wait to be shot for simply not having a "house".

(Amendment I) Sorry, you don't have the right to assemble in public space even in protest because your homeless.
(Amendment IV) Sorry, you don't have the right to be served a search warrant when we steal your only way to stay warm and dry.
(Amendment VIII) Sorry, your under arrest for trying to survive in public spaces in the middle of winter/heatwave after the city/state/federal has taken everything from you and there is absolutely no place to go to get out of the weather.
A short time ago, #Trump decided that 770,000 people have no US Constitution rights when he declared it #Illegal2BHomeless across the entire country. Not only do we now have to be on the lookout for city cops, shariffs, state cops, National Guards that also forgot the oath we say when joining the US Military, we have to be looking for every day haters who won't hesitate to kill us for simply not having paid for place to live.
But the silence continues.

Yesterday I showed how the Glas V8 bore more than a passing resemblance to the original Maserati Quattroporte (white car). While browsing through my photos, I discovered a second not-quite Doppelgänger in the form of the 1965 Lancia Flavia coupé (green car, Automotoretró, Lingotto/Turin, 2017). The Glas and Maserati came from the pen of Frua but the Lancia was a Pininfarina design.

I had to get done with morning chores early to meet my daughter in town at the Farmer's market.
Today is my birthday so we treated ourselves to some fancy coffee. The market had live music and a beautiful display of goods for sale. We loaded up on the best fruit and veggies Humboldt has to offer.
At the end of every month I try to use the money left in my budget to give back to the community. Today we got some twenty dollar bills from the ATM on our way to the market. Everyone that we bought from got a twenty dollar tip. We included the musicians on our way out.
The perfect way to celebrate together.
We had great fun.

Google AI Falsely Says YouTuber Visited Israel, Forcing Him to Deal With Backlash
Science and music YouTuber Benn Jordan had a rough few days earlier this week after Google’s AI Summary falsely said he recently visited Israel and caused people to believe he supported the country during its war on Gaza. Jordan does not support Israel and has previously donated to Palestinian charities.Jordan told 404 Media that when people type his name into Google it’s often followed by “eyebrows” or “wife.” That changed when popular political Twitch streamer Hasan Piker decided to react to his video about Flock AI, an AI powered camera company that 404 Media has covered extensively. Jordan’s videos have appeared on Piker’s stream before, so he knew he was in for a bit of a ride. “Anytime that he has reacted to my content I’m always like ‘Oh no, I’m going to get eviscerated in front of millions of people for being a libertarian without being able to explain my views,” he said.
playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2…
This time it was a little different, however. “I looked at it and in the middle of it, his chat was kind of going crazy, saying that I support Israel’s genocidal behavior,” Jordan said. “And then I started getting a bunch of messages from people asking me why I don’t make myself clear about Israel, or why I support Israel and I’ve donated plenty of money to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. I’ve been pretty vocal in the past about not supporting Israel and supporting a free Palestinian state.”Then someone sent him a screenshot of the AI generated summary of a Google search result that explained the deluge of messages. If you typed “Benn Jordan Israel” into Google and looked only at its AI summary, this is what it told you:
“Electronic musician and science YouTuber Benn Jordan has recently become involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, leading to significant controversy and discussion online. He has shared his experiences from a trip to Israel, during which he interviewed people from kibbutzim near the Gaza border,” the AI summary said, according to a screenshot Jordan shared on Bluesky. “On August 18, 2025, Benn Jordan uploaded a YouTube video titled I Was Wrong About Israel: What I Learned On the Ground, which detailed his recent trip to Israel.”
Jordan had never been to Israel and he doesn't make content about war. His videos live at the cross section of science and sound and he went viral earlier this year when he converted a PNG sketch into an audio waveform and taught the song to a young starling, effectively saving a digital image in the memory of a bird. He’s also covered the death of Spotify, crumbling American capitalism, and the unique dangers AI poses to musicians.
It seemed that Google’s AI had confused Jordan with the YouTuber Ryan McBeth, a guy who does make videos about war. McBeth is a chainsmoking NEWSMAX commentator who has a video titled “I Was Wrong About Israel: What I Learned on the Ground,” the exact same title Google thought Jordan was responsible for.
It’s a weird mistake for AI to make, but AI makes a lot of mistakes. AI generated songs are worse than real ones, AI generated search results funnel traffic away from the sites where Google gets the information it is summarizing and are often wrong. Jordan’s experience is just one small sample of what happens when people take AI at face value without doing five minutes of extra research.
When Jordan learned he was being misrepresented by the AI summary, he started sharing the story on Bluesky and Threads. He told 404 Media that the AI summary updated itself about 24 hours later. “Eventually the AI picked up me posting about it and then said that there was a rumor about me, a false rumor, spread about me going to Israel. And then I was just kind of ripping the hair out of my head. I was like, ‘you don’t even know that you created the rumor!’”
He told 404 Media that he thought it might be possible that Google’s AI had defamed him and he reached out to lawyers for an opinion, not as a prelude to a lawsuit but more out of curiosity. One told him he may have a case. “I’m going to Yellowstone next week for 10 days. I’m going to be completely off the grid,” Jordan said. “Had this happened, and had this continued to spread around and become a giant controversy, I would probably lose YouTube subscribers, I would lose Patreon members.”
Jordan has covered AI in the past and said he wasn’t shocked by the system breaking down. “Everybody’s rushing LLMs to be part of our daily lives [...] But the actual LLM itself is not good. It’s just not what they claim it is. It may never be what they claim it is due to the limitations of how LLMs work and AI works, and despite the promises that are made. It’s just a really bad algorithm for gaining any sort of useful information that you can trust and it’s prioritizing that above journalists to keep the money.”
In the aftermath of the whole thing, Jordan clarified his position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. In a thread on Bluesky he said he does think that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and why. “Hopefully, somebody sees that before they waste their time to message me to lecture me about genocide,” he said. “Although, now I’m being lectured about genocide from the other side. Now I have skin in it. Now I’m dealing with messages from people defending Israel, telling me that I’m antisemetic.”
This isn’t the first time Google’s AI summary has screwed up the basic facts about someone with a public profile. In July, humorist Dave Barry discovered that Google’s AI summary thought he had died last year after a battle with cancer. Barry is very much alive and detailed his fight to correct the record of his demise in his newsletter. Like Jordan, Google’s AI overview shifted. Unlike Jordan, it changed after Barry fought with Google’s various automated complaint systems.
When an AI makes mistakes like this we tend to call it a hallucination. Jordan used the word when he posted the updated summary of his life. “I’ve thought about it the last few days, and that’s giving it so much credit, that it could hallucinate something” Jordan said. “Generally, it’s not great at scraping data and retrieving it in a way that’s reputable.”
“The vast majority of AI Overviews are factual and we’ve continued to make improvements to both the helpfulness and quality of responses," a Google spokesperson told 404 Media. "When issues arise—like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context—we use those examples to improve our systems, and we take action as appropriate under our policies.”
Update: This story has been updated with a statement from Google.

After experimenting further with PeerTube channels, it seems both PeerTube channels and PeerTube accounts DO federate correctly.
So, it is fine to follow either PeerTube accounts or channels from Mastodon etc.
Apologies to everyone I confused with the previous version of this post. There used to be a problem with channel federation but it has apparently been solved.

I'm really embarassed to tell you that this has already been fixed and channels do now federate correctly so you can follow them from Mastodon etc (though they are displayed in Mastodon as boosting the account's videos).
Apologies for causing confusion about an old already-fixed bug. I've corrected the original post to stop the incorrect info going any further.
It's quite difficult to tell unless you have a single-user Mastodon instance where you're not following external accounts or relays and also a PeerTube account you can publish to.
Luckily I do have all this and was able to narrow down the behaviour. Just wish I had done this BEFORE posting about the topic 😳
I messed up, my info on the behaviour of channels vs accounts was out of date.
They have fixed the problem, both channels and accounts work fine in Mastodon etc.
Apologies for the confusion I caused, I've edited the original post to make all of this clear. I'll try to be more careful in future. Sorry. 😞
@ib
If you see a PeerTube video shared on Mastodon etc, the user name above the video is the PeerTube account.
If you see a PeerTube video on a PeerTube website, there are two usernames below the video: a channel and an account.
If you see a PeerTube channel on a website, it will have a link to its parent account labelled "Owner Account" or "View Owner Account".
I've got to apologise, because it turns out they have fixed it.
Channels and accounts can both be followed from Mastodon etc and they will both work.
The problem had been around for so long, I had no idea it had been fixed. I just did some experiments to confirm that following channels does now work from Mastodon.
I've edited the original post to make all of this clear. Sorry for the confusion and I'll try to do better next time.
Please ignore my original post, it turns out they have now fixed this problem. PeerTube channels and accounts now work fine on Mastodon.
Apologies for the confusion caused, I've edited the original post to make this clear.
It's a lot clearer to people who have a PeerTube account! 😅
PeerTubers have to set up both the account and channels before they can upload videos, so they would be more aware of the differences.
My fault, I messed up, there isn't a problem after all. Apologies for causing confusion about this, I will try to be more careful in future.
Please do always say something! 👍
It gets people to check whether what they say is right (which in this case it wasn't 😬 ).
I love Peertube, but how the way they handle accounts/channels. Accounts being separate from channels sounds good on paper, but it makes it confusing to the average person.
It's one of the reasons why I keep my Peertube channel separate from my Mastodon account.
I messed up, it turns out that the difference isn't as confusing as it used to be, PeerTube channels do now work correctly when you follow them from Mastodon etc.
Apologies for the confusion caused, I've edited my original post to make all this clear.
Apologies, it turns out this has already been fixed.
It was around so long that I didn't check if it was fixed before posting about it.
So, it is actually okay to follow channels and accounts from Masotdon etc.
It seems they have now fixed this behaviour and it now works the way you would expect it to.
I thought it hadn't been fixed, but it had been. Apologies for the confusion caused by my original post, I've edited it to make all this clear.
I've updated the original post, anyone who shared it ought to check out the new version.
Very sorry to have caused unnecessary confusion for everyone, I have edited the original post to try to reduce the confusion at source.
The federation problem was around for so long that I assumed it was still here and didn't bother checking before doing the post. I'll be more careful in future.
Incidentally, this fix also means that the "magazines" of Flipboard accounts also now federate correctly.
Yeah, this is frustrating.
I just had a look at the Mastodon and PeerTube Githubs, I'm not 100% sure which platform is the problem but I've raised this as an issue at github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube…
Let's see what happens.
Change description format to be visible on Mastodon

I think people worry they haven't followed the right thing, or enough things, and follow until there is no following left.
We really need some "parent account" standard and UI on the Fediverse.
Yeah, the username on a PeerTube video as seen from Mastodon can definitely be confusing, especially if the channel and account names/avatars are totally different.
Apparently they already did fix it and I hadn't noticed, the channels and accounts do now both federate correctly.
Apologies for the confusion caused by my claiming otherwise, I messed up. I've edited the original post to make all this clear.
I just did a test on my own peertube server to confirm, and I only followed a channel. When posting to that channel, the video showed up in my mastodon timeline as a boost from that channel.
Yup, you're absolutely right, this works now. Also confirmed this from my own PeerTube and Mastodon instance.
It used to be that videos didn't show up if you followed the channel alone, but now they do.
Apologies for the confusion caused, I've edited the original post to make the true situation clear.

@ocdtrekkie @dalias I’ll clarify because you’re right that Google certainly contains multitudes.
I believe while it may not be true of everything they ship, that Google also genuinely has world-class security researchers (e.g., Project Zero), engineers on infra, Go devs, and plenty more. I also think it’s reasonable to say that Google has invested a lot in browser sandboxing and other tech over the years, relative to the other engines. Also FWIW, security != privacy wrt Google.
@matt_garber @dalias Well privacy = security, so we're already up a creek... The problem is not that Googlers aren't smart, but that they don't understand the core principles of effective security, which is almost exclusively about humans, not cryptography.
Project Zero is a black hat group sent after companies or projects Google finds inconvenient.
@ocdtrekkie @matt_garber In some senses you're both right. At least among the ones I've met, the Googlers working on browser security are smart and believe they're doing something good for the public, but it's one of those cases where it's hard to see what's wrong with the model you're working in when your paycheck depends on not seeing it. Google's idea of security is very much not aligned with the interests of the public, and the browser team constantly do things required of them by other parts of the company, with poor justifications they're able to convince themselves to believe, that are extremely harmful to security.
I don't really deem them a factor tho in this question. Google's control of the browser is harmful, but anyone else who purchased it would want to get orders of magnitude more harm for the price tag they'd be paying.

Anyone can setup a scam company with a name sufficiently close to some company users trust and get an EV issued to that name to deceive users that they're trustworthy.
@ocdtrekkie @twifkak @matt_garber BIMI is likewise bad. For the exact same reasons.
The only reason they insisted on doing something so ridiculous was that they previously made the decision to *hide the actual sender address* and only show a freeform text field the sender sets to anything they want.
Email clients should never show the sender name, only the raw email address, unless the name is in your address book matching the address.
@dalias @twifkak @matt_garber Why is BIMI bad? It's not. VMC and EV are the only things that actually approach a useful purpose for the entire WebPKI nonsense. Because while there may be holes worth shoring up they put a huge practical dent in the problem of enabling users to trust a message.
And it's important that you recognize that an example edge case is not important: They are practically extremely effective: Malicious use is basically zero.
@ocdtrekkie @twifkak @matt_garber LMAO even BIMI Group says:
"BIMI enables brands to have control over the logos displayed with their email. It is important to know that BIMI is not a security solution."
IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW BIMI IS NOT A SECURITY SOLUTION.
@ocdtrekkie @twifkak @matt_garber Nobody needs to know "site I'm interacting with is a big respected company that gets a green lock". What folks need to know is that the party they're interacting with now is *the same party* they setup a prior relationship with.
None of the authoritarian validation systems do anything to solve this problem.
@ocdtrekkie @twifkak @matt_garber The long-lived identifier you have to know you're dealing with the same party is the *domain name*. That's the whole point of a domain name. The certificate validates that you're communicating with the legitimate owner of the domain name. Whether it's EV or not makes no difference.
Yes there are way this system could be a lot better. But "trust some freeform text field in an EV cert" is so ridiculously worse than "use the domain system the way it was intended".
@dalias @twifkak @matt_garber Has an EV cert *ever* been used maliciously? Like not in a test case but for actual abuse?
The trusting authority part is sort of useful, if we insist on having CAs at all, but the funny part is the most useful part of EV is the part of TLS modern organizations want to eliminate: Cost. Cost is why EV is basically a guaranteed indicator you've landed on a safe site.
@ocdtrekkie @twifkak @matt_garber Yes, they have. I don't have receipts readily available and Google is broken and won't find them, but it's happened.
However, there are two sides to the malice of EV. One is lending trust to scammers who get an EV cert to exploit trust. The other is the harm to everyone who doesn't pay the EV racket, when users who don't understand wonder why the browser UI shows them as "less secure".
@ocdtrekkie @twifkak @matt_garber Um, most payment transactions are with parties I absolutely do not expect to dox themselves to be able to recive payment.
I do not see how you can call yourself a "privacy advocate" and yet claim every payment transaction should require an EV certificate. 🤦
Aside from that, payment transactions are low-stakes, lowest-possible even. If they're fraudulent the payment processor reverses them.
@dalias After hearing stories of Perplexity considering buying chrome... yeah I am far happier with Chrome staying in Google's space.
Google is also pretty awful for the internet but at least they're mostly interested in exploiting humans to deliver ads and sell data instead of, whatever the hell AI companies think they're trying to accomplish. Google comes off as far less likely to accelerate the Dead Internet vs Perplexity.
I'm not attempting to defend google here, but I've seen two assertions now that Mozilla is going to die without Google funding (which would be absolutely true); but this is straight from the article: "Under the court's ruling, Google will still be permitted to pay for search placement—those multi-billion-dollar arrangements with Apple and Mozilla can continue."
what am I missing? Has google indicated it's going to stop supporting Mozilla? Or was the hope that, if they lost Chrome, they'd end up dumping a lot more money into Firefox?
a few questions:
1) how does this kill mozilla (even if indirectly)? what does thunderbird have to do with google owning chrome?
2) what is the argument for google's ownership of chrome allow it to have a monopoly on search?
3) if google was forced to divest from chrome, who would take those shares?
4) what does all of this mean in relation to google's development efforts on chromium?
divestiture of Chrome was a horrible proposal for breaking Google's monopoly anyway. As someone elsewhere mentioned in the thread Chrome is a cost center.
Forcing Google to sell off its advertising arm would be better. A lot of decisions that hurt users and customers are driven by making Google's ads more pervasive and more profitable. It would also significantly punish them for their bad behaviour since advertising actually makes Google money.
"[...] but Google claimed no other company could hope to operate Chrome and Chromium like it does."
wasn't that kinda the point of the ruling though?
This total bullshit where monopolies are permitted is a big part of why everything is terrible.
Exploiting people, whether consumers or workers, is unethical and wrong.
There are too many mediocre men on judicial benches and seats of power.

Israel says that, as imperial Britain did not specify political rights for Palestinians, only Jews have a right to sovereignty over Palestine from the river to the sea.
That's the century-long argument stemming from the Balfour declaration of 1917.
And the EU's Josep Borrell agreed.

Nobody took Lord Balfour seriously at the time of his utterances. Look how long it took before anybody did. Nobody coronated Lord Balfour king of anything.
Idk that that's the point. I thought the poster might be alluding to Jewish powerbrokers. I was trying to point out that power and money is not confined to one group.
The letter was addressed to Rothschild, and the British started bringing Eastern European Jews to Palestine after ww1 finished. They had long planned it.

The British public was outraged at the time it was issued, though, and whatever the UK did in that regard was on the QT. Britain was operating under the League of Nations' -issued Palestine Mandate but that was the extent of it at the time.
