I’m following Judge Boasberg’s hearing, now, on emergency TRO request to help Venezuelans who seem in imminent danger of deportation to El Salvador. I so admire his methodical and calm approach as he considers what he knows is potentially a huge crisis. 1/
Boasberg’s problem is that the TRO requested might seem very similar to the one the Roberts Court vacated. Plaintiffs are arguing that this TRO is to enforce the habeas notice and hearing rights the Court announced and so it is not the same as the TRO requested before which was made under Administrative Procedure Act. Sorry to be so technical. Attempting to show you what Boasberg is trying to figure out. 2/
I’ll try to simplify. The Roberts Court said that detained Venezuelans must file habeas petititions where they are confined. This makes any nationwide class certification virtually impossible. Some courts have certified smaller classes, covering all detainees in a particular geographical area. 3/
The Northern District of Texas hasn’t even certified a class covering all detainees in its geographical area of jurisdiction. And Texas judge hasn’t granted a TRO specifically enjoining removals without meaningful notice and opportunity to rebut. 4/
So far, in Boasberg hearing, DoJ attorney Drew Ensign has only said that it is his understanding the named plaintiffs in the Northern Texas case will not be shipped to El Salvador anytime soon and that no flights are scheduled for today’s date. He hasn’t been able to confirm that there are no flights scheduled for, say, 12:01 a.m. tomorrow. The current recess is to give Ensign time to find out that there are NO flights scheduled for ANY time tomorrow. 5/
Boasberg cares about timing of flights because he has legal and prudential reasons to give 5th Circuit and Supreme Court time to act on the emergency motions the plaintiffs have filed in those courts. But since it doesn’t look like they will act in the next 24 hours, Boasberg wants Ensign to promise no flights will go before then. 6/
I doubt Boasberg trusts Ensign, but if Ensign affirmatively represents there will be no flights and then there are, Ensign risks being in clear contempt of court. Such a finding wld make him vulnerable to disbarment so he has reason to be honest and if he tells Court no flights to make sure no flights go. 7/
Hearing has resumed. Boasberg seems to feel his hands are tied, that he can’t make rulings in Northern District of Texas’s geographical area. Plaintiffs want a sworn statement from Trump officials that no planes will go out tonight. 9/
Boasberg says he has to deny the TRO before him. He obviously wishes he could grant it but Supreme Court plus status of proceedings in Fifth Circuit tie his hands. I admire him so much for giving plaintiffs attorneys a chance to figure out with him if there’s anything he could lawfully do. 10/

part of why DNS is so... "fun"... is the number of moving parts. the domain owner usually has a registrar account (but sometimes a proxy like markmonitor or csc), the registrar puts things into the actual TLD database (registry), which then creates the needed entries in the TLD pointing to the DNS operator operating the authoritative servers that answer the questions about records in that zone and the internet uses recursive servers who ask those authoritative servers for answers, then cache them.
co-opting the registrar account credentials, miscues between hops in this chain, malicious takeovers of auth or recursive servers, all are possible breakdowns, without even considering insertion of fake/forged answers somewhere in the resolution chain.

Each of these near neighborhood-wide deployments cover critical services and in some cases enough essential services that a person might be on camera everytime they leave home for years on end.

One of our two senior developers has been forcibly detained and conscripted to participate in a war. When they first went missing, we revoked their repository access as a precaution. We soon learned their disappearance was completely unrelated to GrapheneOS. Our priority has been keeping them safe.
We've used our available connections to try to keep them safe. There's no way to get them out of the conscription. However, they're an incredibly talented security researcher and engineer and it would be extraordinarily misguided to send them to front line combat. This seems to be understood now.
GrapheneOS development and updates have continued and will keep going. We have substantial funds available to hire more people to work on GrapheneOS. We'll need to hire multiple experienced developers to fill their big shoes. They'll hopefully be safe and when they return we'll have a bigger team.

Our near term focus is going to heavily shift to Android 16 porting, maintenance and continuing to do better patching than standard Android 15 QPR2. An OEM providing us early access to Android 16 sources would help a lot and we wouldn't need to slow down new feature development nearly as much.
We felt obligated to go public about this but waited a couple weeks to make sure they were safe and that us going public wouldn't harm them. We avoided specifying the country or war to avoid involving GrapheneOS in a debate on forced conscription in an existential defensive war.
Some of the donations are very large but even some of those were done anonymously. We know who several of the large donors are including ongoing support from Vitalik Buterin as an example.
Do you have or plan to have any transparency report? I am not talking about personal data on the developers but something more akin to like breakdown of the incomes.
Like: "for this quarter we received this total, this amount was used to pay developers, this amount was used to pay infraestructure, this amount was used to buy devices, this amount was saved to safeguard against unexpected events,..." and so on.

I can't believe we're talking about this shit like it matters. She's a space tourist, not an astronaut. I think that the folks who are REAL astronauts must be appalled that a word that infers a great level of training, knowledge, and related experience would be applied to a pop star who has no understanding of space.
The original definition was applied to anyone who went into space. So regardless of how people feel about her, yes, she would be an astronaut.
I think that definition will need to change when we become a space fairing society (meaning when space travel becomes common travel for common folk). Since that has not yet happen, the original definition applies.
Those videos you see of the world moving below, what seems like superfast, are not sped up. The ISS, for example, which is further out, so it makes larger passes, passes the earth 16x in a day, and only takes 1 1/2 hours each pass.
@Linux this particular mission was not orbiting. The rocket is only big enough to throw the capsule at the orbital altitude and let it free fall back to Earth.
I read somewhere they did high enough to orbit, having it go once around, and come right back down. It is not hard to do, just have it circle once, and free fall back down.
They are astrotourists. They did no work, flew no rocket/capsule, and performed no experiments, they just fucked around at the edge of space for a few mins. It's akin to calling myself a pilot for merely flying in a plane.
