Fought a structure fire in the basement of an old (and very flammable) rural house.
Was notable for two surprises.
The homeowner had stacked firewood in the basement, and the stacks got too close to the wood furnace, and the wood eventually ignited.
We arrived as smoke and fire was rolling out of the basement windows and the exterior basement stairway.
We knocked down the bulk of the fire, and were able to make a successful interior fire attack.
The first surprise was the house was saved by some 25Β’ sheets of close-out wallboard purchased from Montgomery Ward, tacked to the basement ceiling. Whatever that wallboard was (asbestos?) kept the fire from getting into the floor joists and up into the rest of the house long enough for us to flood and enter the basement and attack the seat of the fire.
The second surprise was a litter of puppies reported still in the heavily-involved basement.
As we got the fire under control, we thought weβd find them all crispy, but they all got into the perimeter floor drains, draine that had filled with firefighting water. The first puppy we spotted was crouched in the perimeter drain, but looked up at us as we approached. We located and gathered them all and carried them out to the homeowners. The puppies were a little sooty and fur singed on topside, and were all shivering from the cold water and the stress, but all survived.
