rich white guys like David Brooks may be mad now, but all they want is a return to the old status quo, not really understanding or caring that the status old quo was what created the perfect conditions for Trump to seize power of the US government. He can quote Marx all he wants, he still doesn't seem to me to be at all interested in how we came to this point of total constitutional crisis that we are in now.
The conditions that let Trump consolidate power of the US government is all related to, the roll-back of Roe v. Wade, the militarization of the police, the climate crisis, and the various US-backed genocides going on right now. All of these things are related by the same cause. So if there are to be wildcat strikes and mass civil disobediance against Trump's despotism, the movement **must** demand redress of all of those issues at once, or it will ultimately affect no change at all.
one problem at a time please, in the appropriate order
@codinghorror @cdarwin no, that is absolutely a recipe for disaster. I cannot stress this enough.

I was an intern in Arlen Specter's office in DC when DHS was created. My main task was a report on the intelligence failures leading to 9/11. DHS addressed precisely 0 issues that allowed that attack. Those 3 months showed me how disconnected from reality the government is.
I presented my findings, basically that the group that got the plane at Dulles that hit the Pentagon was the only one that we had enough that we should have caught them. The Senator told my boss I was wrong and to rewrite the report to say we should have been able to stop all of them. I quit and never looked back.

Yup. When the planes struck the towers, I told my mom that the world had just changed. I couldn't seen exactly how things would play out, but I knew that unscrupulous men seize moments of crisis to advance their agendas. No kidding. That name gave me a chill. "Homeland" is way too much like "Fatherland". It's "blood and soil" aesthetics, and that is never to be trusted.
I also like to point out how immigration used to be handled by the "Immigration and Naturalization Service" -- the name implied helping immigrants.
"Immigration and Customs Enforcement" flips the emphasis to stopping immigrants.
Names -> Culture -> Recruiting. It matters.
It definitely reminded me of Nazi Germany's exhortations of the Fatherland.

What if the US had, instead of threatening to invade a sovereign nation because they didn't like the idea of others being able to judge if they'd committed war crimes, said, "great, we'll also arrest any suspected war criminals of other nations' militaries". Congress, girl, you in danger.
The Members of Congress (Senators and Representatives) in the US are in real danger of being killed or disappeared. It’s standard in authoritarian takeovers.
The current Representatives and Senators must act now to protect themselves (and the country and Constitution).

Exactly. With such a wealth of evidence, it's hard to see them yield so readily. And we don't even have to look further back than the Columbia vs Harvard comparison. One capitulated and one didn't, and they're both suffering. At least Columbia seems like they are starting to push back a little. Better late than never?
I can't say what I would do in their position. But I will say that leaders at any level have a certain responsibility that comes with that job. Surrendering without even making an attempt to resist isn't what we as a society need, and like you said, on an individual level it isn't going to pay off with this guy or his henchmen.
@AngelaPreston I agree with you, clearly.
Good point that leadership[ carries with it responsibilities. And I also get how genuinely concerning and frightening defiance feels and is.
A rabid dog cannot be negotiated with, no matter how much we wish we could negotiate and get safety from such negotiations.
Compliance and defiance don't guarantee safety, yet even as defiance seems more likely to have one prevail or survive long-term, making it through today can feel impossible.

I can't answer for @Bette of course, but a few *have* answered me when confronted with the same question.
Usually something patriotic - "Democracy always wins" (and they refuse to hear all of the times that it hasn't). Or something about "hope and faith". These are people that are so terrified by reality that they absolutely refuse to see it.
Some of the people I engage with are elderly and don't see what they can possibly do about it *other* than hope. They are terrified, but don't know how to resolve it. They learned how to huddle in a corner and cut back from their Depression-era parents, so that's what they're doing.
People are suffering a trauma response daily; at some point they are going to change tactics because what they're doing isn't working. And basically all of us have been trained that "fight" should be the absolute last resort.

@aburtch @Bette I think one can have faith in our system, and rule of law while _also_ knowing that taking out the legislature is standard practice in autocratic backsliding.

I very much hope US legislators have been talking to military commanders since the election result last year. I have seen no evidence at all of this. It seems like the obvious thing to do when the constitution is under such threat. The US officer's oath doesn't contain anything about obeying the president, that I know of.
I hope the absence of evidence is because of the conversations being clandestine, not evidence of absence.

@eswag The US military swears an oath of allegiance to US Constitutions, not president, though they do swear to "…obey…orders of…President…and…orders of…officers appointed over me," which makes sense as…superior officers/commander in chief have reason to command soldiers to follow all _legal_ orders.

@eswag UCMJ forbids soldier to follow illegal orders. "to be lawful…order must 1 have…valid military purpose 2 be clear, specific, & narrowly drawn…order must not conflict with…statutory…constitutional rights…)"

@eswag no, perhaps you mistyped: "I note the officer's oath doesn't include obeying the president" is not true. It does.
The oath includes: "...I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me."
And yes, the oath does not include instruction on how to arrest violators of the Consitutition or the oaths others took.
Commanders in Chief do need to be able to command.
But their commands must be lawful for the soldier to obey the commands.
The Constitution is the highest law of the land, so nothing the President Commands can be lawful if it contravenes the Constitution.
@eswag my non-lawyer understanding is that if a military commander had reason to believe a potus was violating the law, and ordered an MP (normal soldiers don't really have arrest powers beyond citizen's arrest), then the MP would have to arrest the potus to both comply with a lawful order and possibly avoid becoming some sort of accomplice after the fact or maybe an obstructer of justice.
The military in the US has several laws forbidding them from domestic and civilian law enforcement.
@lyda and Speaker Johnson, like all the gop, is also in danger.
Saddam "Murdered his own party and opposition alike until everyone in the chamber 'got it'"
No one in Congress is safe from such things.

What the #WhiteHouse has been posting is fucking disgusting and horrible and people who agree with these posts should be ashamed of themselves.
This has actually made me really angry.

Looks like "big balls" is now doing the WH communication...
