Accuweather: Extended heatwave in India, Pakistan to test survivability limits, with temperatures reaching Death Valley levels
For hundreds of millions of people living in India and Pakistan the early arrival of summer heatwaves has become a terrifying reality that’s testing survivability limits and putting enormous strain on energy supplies, vital crops and livelihoods.
Radio Free Trumpistan reshared this.
Not that it makes them categorically incapable of delivering factual info, but Accuweather has been involved with people like Santorum trying to strongarm the NWS into not providing data to the public and competing with their business (of repeating that data for a fee) and their CEO (and founder’s brother) was appointed admin of the NOAA by Trump in 2019.
No idea if that’s relevant to you, but since I’d want to know if I didn’t already, I’m sharing.

It really frustrates me how tagging people with visceral images of evil "push people into subways" or "hit old woman with a baseball bat" however serious these claims might be remains an effective way to short circuit the ability of many Americans to reason.

"Yes, obviously."

And so much of the outrage at these often imaginary often racist and folklore like "evil acts" is ... performative.
I'm reminded of the kind of guy who boasts all of the time about the terrible things he wants to do "rapists" -- the kind of guy who describes in detail the horrible torture he'd inflict on "rapists" --He loves women so much, right?
Or does he love torture so much?
And when you point out that due process matters, YOU get called a monster for not sharing their bloodlust.

This whole mentality that if you aren't thrown into a state of rage that would make it easy to ignore the steps required to even know if you have the facts (if there even was a real crime) is a sign (to them) that you don't really care about women or children or their safety.
I don't want anyone to be tortured. Not even the most evil people. More human suffering is simply more human suffering. Nothing is undone by vengeance but, through vengeance more evil may be done. Is this radical?
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
This isn't "empathy" it's a desire to actually know what happened and act in accordance with reality not the emotional urges evoked by tales of upsetting crimes.
If there are "really bad dudes" we should find them and know exactly who they are and stop them from acting again.
But as things are going we'll need to keep waiting for them to deny the rights of a person with enough means and social network to make the public emotional enough to stop this. This sucks.
My neighbor in the Bronx has been snatched away without reason. But they don't speak English and aren't wealthy and it feels like no one is listening.
(Sorry for ranting.)
I totally agree. And it often feels very lonely, i often feel very exposed, when i'm the only one who openly disagrees with those torture fantasies.
So, thank you for that rant. It makes me feel less alone with that point of view.
@Lana
Well, there clearly are very bad dudes in the current administration.
And I think that we perfectly know who they are.
@Lana
@futurebird
being boring, I just ask if punitive justice is the best they can dream of?
in the few cases where it would simply be impossible, the worst I'd accept is a quick and painless death.
@MxSpoon
I'm disturbed by the aparent need to prove to others how outraged they are by obviously bad things.
To me that's a given? You aren't remarkable. Does that make any sense.
Consider someone going on and on about "Throwing kittens in the river is evil, trowing kittens in the cold river water is wrong!" you start to wonder if *they* aren't the one throwing the kittens. Yes, we all get it. It's horrible.
This rhetoric seems to work for some people. And, I *don't* get that.
a fantasy moral dilemma i often think about is imagine if you could push one of two buttons, each of which does a mutually incompatible thing to all the billionaires, fascists, techbros, authoritarians and mercenaries causing all the evil and pollution we see today
1. they will live the happiest, most fulfilling lives they will have had, completely unpunished with no regrets, dying quietly and peacefully as centenarians at home surrounded by loved ones, but they and their kind will have no ability to ever influence politics or economy or society again
2. no promise that the evil will not return, but the people responsible for the current evil will be removed from power and tormented with all the evil they had directly or indirectly caused others before perishing once justice has been fully served so that we don't have to think about them anymore
rationally the choice is painfully obvious but i do wonder how many - possibly even a majority - of people would push the second button
@silverfish
I couldn't enjoy 2 because after the first few moments it would slowly start to eat at me. Then *I* end up feeling guilty and bad about someone suffering. Because stripped of the ability to do more harm and suffering they'd just seem sad. It would be very amusing to see how angry and shocked they'd be. But that's all you get that's worth it and then the knowledge that you could have done a better job for everyone with the other choice.
I don't think it's that hard.
Also, being peaceful and surrounded by loves ones isn't a given for some of these men and I think that's part of the problem? Being happy can be a terrible thing if you have been a terrible person. It might allow them to catch a glimpse of who they were. In a way 1 is also a kind of punishment.
@futurebird I’m pretty vocal about my history of CSA. Even well-meaning people often need me to be like… “hey, you responded to my experience of violence by wanting to inflict more violence, do you think that helps me? Do you think more violence will make me feel safer?”
Most of them get it. These guys tend to 180 and accuse me of deserving it, bc the violence is the point to them. But so many reasonable people default to that violence, too. It’s cultural IMO.
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
This is exactly the impression I get. Men who boast constantly about the violence they would inflict on those who harm women ... they mostly scare me. They don't make me feel safe at all.
@futurebird
I was briefly confused by what was supposed to be criminal or evil about "pushing people into subways", versus just a nuisance on crowded mass transit.
But then I reminded myself that facts, logic, and consistency have never been things that concern authoritarians.
Power and using it to inflict cruelty are.
@futurebird
I feel like when people do this they're assuming the Really Bad Dudes(tm) are already unassailably proven to be guilty. So basically they can believe justice is well served because the dude got a sort of trial. But life is so much more complicated than that.
I wish the media and the pundits would phrase it as proving guilt instead of using the phrase due process.
I'm a big believer in process but most people hear that and think "unnecessary red tape."

Does that mean the pilots could have just flown those planes to Tahiti or something and kept the planes? I mean, once those planes leave US jurisdiction, can US law be used to force someone to return the planes?
