I am not sure why. Some users go crazy with labeling everything as Sensitive Content. I guess they do not realize if you highlight everything on every page then essentially nothing is highlighted? Well, let them be them and I will be me. From here on out if it is labeled Sensitive Content I am ignoring that post. Not because it has sensitive content, rather because I am sure it does not. I will also start ignoring users that post everything they post as sensitive content.

I know it should not bother me. It does though so I will just make it go away.

The average user may believe that all the hype they read about security on the internet is overrated. To be honest some of it is and some of it is just to sell you a product you do not need.

In the case of Internet Facing Services this is not the case. If you have an internet facing service then you have to be sure your server is secure. This is why I insist on SELinux on my servers. AppArmor is easier to configure though not as configurable as SELinux for as many cases. I would also strongly suggest you never disable SELinux (or AppArmor if that is what you are using) to ease installation and implementation. It is not worth the risk. Just learn to use your Gnu/Linux Hardening system to its fullest extent. Do not disable it.

I have attached a screenshot of an ssh session to my VPS. As you can see every few seconds an attack fails. This is why the security is required.

I am not sure how long the Server has been down today. I went to login and got a 503: Service Unavailable. I am looking into what caused the issue.

After discovering that I could not connect to my instance, though the server was still up. I did the most reasonable thing ;). I rebooted it. That seems to have fixed whatever took the service down. I am looking into what caused the issue and how to prevent it in the future.

One of the most frequent issues with my Friendica instance is that the scripts using php-imagick are not handling exceptions. This is not a huge issue though it is an example of how a lot of the code base, in my opinion, is rushed and loosely implemented. I decided to learn more about ImageMagick in order to address some of these issues. I know it is a small issue, though we start small and work up to larger tasks right 😁.

I have used ImageMagick in the past to do some quick batch processing on files for the web. I love how it has grown in version 7. I will be testing soon. Will post any significant issues I find/ resolve.

I have managed to fine tune my instance for now. Though I will have to see how it handles heavier loads when new users signup. For now the logs only show anticipated issues. Such as graphics that are shared that are not to encoded to the standard and thus throw exceptions. I would rather those exceptions be handled though for now it is not a big deal as it does not affect the server performance.

I am still learning the Friendica codebase so it will be sometime before I can work out issues such as these. And there are far more pressing issues.

Okay, after further digging I have excluded any issues with SELinux preventing caching. There have been no SELinux denials at all in the last three days so this issue is going to be in the code base. There are few things in life as enjoyable as hunting down a memory leak. Please note the heavy sarcasm 😀.

Update:

Okay, The function copyToString() in the Util.php allows the buffer to be read indefinitely or until it reaches an eof(). This only happens if the $maxLen variable is -1, which happens to be its default value. Because we end up in the body of this if() we know that either -1 was passed or the default value was used.

So apparently a file larger than 8gb was served up? That seems extreme though I have raised the bar to 12gb and waiting to see if that fails in time.

This seems reckless as a lot of servers may not have 8gb+ to offer up. This looks dubious and certainly a work around can be reached.
