@Acta Populi

Orwell was an awesome critical thinker. He understood the ideologies behind linguistics. In forensic linguistics we can tell that a historical society lacked a certain belief or even consideration of that belief due to their having no words in their language to identify or describe that belief. In '1984' he introduced the idea of a culture removing words from their society to force them to think along the terms the ruling factor wanted them to. If you have not read '1984' I highly recommend it.

In the near future I will be acquiring a VPS with more resources than the one that Rogue Project Friendica is hosted on at this time. I am not certain of exactly when though it will happen on a weekend. The move should be uneventful and transparent (hopefully). Though, when it is time I will be letting everyone know so they can backup their personal data if they feel a need to. The Instance will be down for a brief period of time while I backup and move the database to the new VPS. This should not take too long. I will keep you advised.

note: This means I will have to update my domain information that can take some time to propagate. Though in my experience it usually will not take all that long.

Have a great day!

Thanks a lot! I now have INTERCAL-72 (and the requisite spitbol) installed on my system. I am sure they will both come in useful. 😉

Never forget what Mussolini did -- smeared the press, demanded loyalty, threatened opponents, cried election fraud, and spread lies through state channels… oh wait, that was Trump.

Instance Back Up

My appologies to anyone that could not log in the last few days. Fail2Ban broke and went nuts. I have been moving and just got time to fix the issue.

People keep asking, "when will they fix it?" But the answer is, we are them, they are us!

Power, laws, and systems only work because we believe in them. The world won’t change by waiting. Real change begins when we stop sleeping through injustice and realize we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

Are You Helping to Propagate BS?

Do Not Propagate BS

It always amazes me when I watch people vehemently oppose a post they disagree with. Even when they do not know the poster or anyone on the post. I do not think they truly understand what they are doing. They are making that post they disagree with more popular and ensuring (or at least contributing to the assurance) that it will have a wider propagation across the Fedi.

Priority of what gets most rapidly spread across the Fedi is governed by several metrics and it is not standardized between the different Instance types either. Though one critical metric will always speed a post across the Fedi and that is reactions. The more reactions a post has the quicker it will propagate. It does not matter if that is positive or negative reactions. It only matters that post got attention. Make no mistake, a comment is considered a reaction. Even if you do not click a Thumbs up or Thumbs down you are reacting by commenting.

So if you are tired of seeing posts you find ridiculous maybe you should start ignoring them instead of boosting them by reacting to them.

Culling of Inactive Members

Culling Inactive Members

I have began deleting accounts that have had no activity for 3 month. In some cases less if it appears the account was established for the purpose of spamming (marketing) the Instance. I have set a cap to the max users before registration closes. To be sure that the Instance stays viable within my budget. As I have stated before if the Instance appears to be able to handle more users than the current cap I will raise the ceiling.

I do not expect that a user has to post everyday or even weekly to be considered active. Though I have to draw the limit somewhere. I decided that a quarter of a year of inactivity was a pretty fair limit. If you are going to be offline for an extended period of time and not sure that you will be able to login then let me know and I will make sure to preserve your account.

Web apps are one of the best-kept secrets of the internet. If you haven't tried them before, they are worth giving a go.

There are web apps for almost all Fediverse platforms including Mastodon. You can find out more at:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a…

Web apps are a mixture of website and app store app, combining many of the best features of both. The restrictions imposed by Apple and Google's app stores do not apply to web apps, so web apps tend to get more features more quickly.

web apps can be very fantastic and thanks for sharing this! Imo, one of the biggest hurdles for them still though is feature parity across device and browsers. Also the UX isn't always well considered for all device types and some native features that people expect for their apps may not be implemented in the web app version.

If we can overcome some of these limitations (and others, then web apps could become even more powerful and that would definitely be cool and strengthen the open social web even more as you pointed out!

in reply to Ben

In the case of federated networks like the Fediverse, web apps have an unusual advantage due to badly-written app store rules that try to hold client makers responsible for the content of instances.

This has been especially noticeable on the PeerTube app store app for example, the iOS version has not been allowed by Apple to have sign-ins onto the user's choice of instance. Meanwhile the PeerTube web app has no restrictions at all on where the user can sign in.

If any Mastodon instances are having trouble with their coats growing out of control, ping me and see if can help lower your bill.

Apparently a recently closed instance was paying $300/month for hosting which is insane to read considering how small of an instance it was. When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.

It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out they’re paying more than instances 10x their size. 😢

Beauty Out Of Its Element

I took this photo at my workplace in the parking lot. The first thing that came to my mind was that just because you are not in an environment that you desire and totally out of your element does not mean that you cannot thrive and be beautiful while doing so.

Freedom of Choice v Freedom from Choice

Freedom of Choice versus Freedom from Choice

I am not a antivaxer. Though I do believe that choice is important. It is often found that freedom requires a level of risk. If we trade our freedom for security then we will eventually find that we have neither.

Scheduled Restarts

Scheduled Restarts

In a perfect world you can just leave services running indefinitely and all is well. We do not live in a perfect world. To be sure that no memory leaks grow (assuming their could be some) I have set the services to restart everyday between 5:45am - 6:00am UTC. This will equate to around the 2:45am - 3:00am EST. In any case this is a very slow period of time for the Instance which is why I chose this time frame. Now it takes seconds for any one of the services to reload and you will really not even notice if it happens while you are doing something on the Instance. The benefits should far outweigh any deficit experienced do to the restarts.

note: In regards to memory leaks it is really only php-fpm that would needs restarting. Though restarting mariadb, php-fpm and apache (in that order) will keep the whole system fresh. Besides I needed to be sure that apache will get restarted whenever my CA cert from EncryptIt gets renewed to be sure that the new cert will be used.

Have a great day and Enjoy you stay on the Fediverse!

Judge orders Border Patrol to halt illegal stops in the Central Valley, after dozens arrested in raids – Los Angeles Times

The days long raid around Bakersfield sparked outrage after video circulated of agents slashing the tires of a gardener who was a citizen on his way to work and raised fears that tactics could become the become the new norm in the largely agricultural area.

Jennifer Thurston, a U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, said in an 88-page order that evidence presented by ACLU lawyers established “a pattern and practice” of violating people’s constitutional rights when detaining people without reasonable suspicion. And then violating federal law by executing warrantless arrests without determining flight risk.

America has forgotten that State Universities (not Ivy league private Institutions) are funded from our Tax Dollars. They used to be free. Then you had to pay for your own books, then you had pay some tuition to offset costs. Though tax dollar contributions have not decreased. We are being Taxed to run these institutions and then charged to attend them. This is ridiculous. It needs to end and education needs to be thought of as a right and not a privilege.
