"A COVID wave is washing over California, with the state seeing continued increases in the number of newly confirmed cases and hospitalizations as some officials urged the public to take greater precautions.
The extent of the recent increases has prompted some county-level health officials to recommend that residents once again consider wearing masks in indoor public settings, at least until transmission has declined. "

@Viss I've got a blueAir (CRBox design, but more expensive to buy and to buy filters for 🙁 ) in every room except my front living room, which has a honeywell. We've got 2 dogs; it's a necessity or the house just smells like dog blanket (and even then, if the dogs don't get baths every 3 weeks, it still happens).
Air in my house isn't my concern, though. It's air at preschool. Or surfaces. Or other kids' hands. Or whatever else my kid decides to lick that day. The school asks parents to keep their kids home, and we usually do if there's any chance he's sick, but so many of the parents rely on preschool for child care so they can work that keeping a kid home isn't really an option for them.
On the upside, we maxed out the kid's out-of-pocket max this year, so all the urgent care visits from this wave of back-to-school illnesses will be free for us.
@Viss Thankfully, every kid at preschool brings their own water bottle. I'm not there, but as far as I know they don't share.
As soon as they get home, though, parents' dinner is fair game. I'm constantly fighting germy hands off my plate/drink/etc.
We had hoped that by 4 things would get less severe, and so far we've been pretty lucky. We'll see how the new school year goes, though.
We had 4 doses of steroids in like 4 months last year to avoid a closed airway due to respiratory virus. Not a good thing for a growing kid.

I use LLMs every day and still read everything where it's appropriate.
One issue here is that we've been promoting long form content in the last 2 decades for SEO and attention hoarding so people's desire for shorter content is a natural correction for this.
Foster saw those people coming a century ago...
"Beware of first-hand ideas!" exclaimed one of the most advanced of them. "First-hand ideas do not really exist. They are but the physical impressions produced by love and fear, and on this gross foundation who could erect a philosophy? Let your ideas be second-hand, and if possible tenth-hand, for then they will be far removed from that disturbing element—direct observation.
—The Machine Stops, by E.M. Forster, 1909
Reading this, thinking, I would say you actually are anti-AI.
You are, aren't you?
The main problem today is how to stimulate independent thinking.
And yes, using AI/LLM for people in this situation is not excactly helpful.
Why would anyone externalise their personal development to a machine?
Machines should help you make better stuff, not replace your thinking.
Sensitive content
Imagine going to a 5-star restaurant, ordering the most exquisite thing on the menu, and then running it through a blender and slorping it down through a straw.
And they do that to everything.
i recently started going back to manuals/books and was surprised by what I was missing.
A. manuals document things precisely, unlike google search results where the competency of the author could be anywhere from 0 to 10000
B. manuals don't have dark UX patterns and distractions that I have to wade through
C. as you read relevant sections of manuals you gain a lot of surrounding knowledge around the topics you read which helps in the long run
I proceeded to close any conversations with that bunch of people.
To me, it is the same line of thinking when it comes to mathematics. "When am I ever going to need to know this? I can just use my calculator."
The calculator is a tool to help, not a replacement for the fundamental understanding of the subject matter.
Reading and, in turn learning, is too tedious a task these days.

I worked for a publishing company in the late 80s, early 90s. The fact-checking role was relegated to the authors (who were promoted to 'field editors').
The fact checking done in-house was by the lowest-paid, newest employees. It amounted to checking spelling in old yellowed dictionaries, and dialing the phone numbers in every magazine ad to make sure it actually reached the company.

🚨 #Trump cannot use #AlienEnemiesAct to deport members of Venezuelan gang, appeals court rules

#LeeGelernt, who argued the case for the #ACLU, said Tuesday: “The #Trump administration’s use of a wartime statute during peacetime to regulate #immigration was rightly shut down by the court. The admin deported people it designated as Tren de Aragua members to a notorious prison in #ElSalvador where, it argued, #US #courts could not order them freed.
In a deal announced in July, more than 250 of the deported immigrants returned to #Venezuela.
The #AlienEnemiesAct was only used 3 times before in US history, all during declared #wars — in the War of 1812 & the two World Wars.
#Trump #law #ImmigrationLaw #immigration #5thCircuit #AbuseOfPower #Constitution #DueProcess #rendition
The #Trump admin unsuccessfully argued that courts cannot second-guess the president’s determination that Tren de Aragua was connected to #Venezuela’s government & represented a danger to the #US, meriting use of the act.
In a 2-1 ruling, the judges said they granted the preliminary injunction sought by the plaintiffs because they “found no invasion or predatory incursion” in this case.
#law #AlienEnemiesAct #ImmigrationLaw #immigration #5thCircuit #AbuseOfPower #Constitution #DueProcess
The decision bars #deportations from #Texas, #Louisiana & #Mississippi. In the majority were US Circuit Judges Leslie Southwick, a George W. Bush appointee, & Irma Carrillo Ramirez, a Joe Biden appointee. Andrew Oldham, a #Trump appointee, dissented.
The majority opinion said Trump’s allegations about Tren de Aragua do not meet the historical levels of national conflict that #Congress intended for the act.
s3.documentcloud.org/documents…
#law #AlienEnemiesAct #ImmigrationLaw #immigration #5thCircuit
“A country’s encouraging its residents & citizens to enter this country illegally is not the modern-day equivalent of sending an armed, organized force to occupy, to disrupt, or to otherwise harm the United States,” the judges wrote.
In a lengthy dissent, Oldham complained his two colleagues were second-guessing Trump’s conduct of foreign affairs & national security, realms where courts usually give the president great deference.
“The majority’s approach to this case is not only unprecedented—it is contrary to more than 200 years of precedent,”Oldham wrote [ridiculous].
The panel did grant the #Trump admin one legal victory, finding the procedures it uses to advise detainees under the #AlienEnemiesAct of their legal rights is appropriate.
The ruling can be appealed to the full #5thCircuit or directly to the #SCOTUS, which is likely to make the ultimate decision on the issue.

I will cover the shipping.
Reach out if interested.

I love that in his own post he criticizes people mistaking electricity for energy right after he mistakes electricity for energy (and makes wild, baseless assumptions for that matter...)
It's hard even to imagine the multiple scandals that such gross incompetence in an administration would have triggered in every single other timeline.
The back of my envelope says this is off by about a factor of 10,000.
Or, in other words: freeingenergy.com/the-earth-ge…
The earth gets more solar energy in one hour than the entire world uses in a year
Earth's continents receive 23,000 terawatt hours of solar energy each year, compared to the 18.5 terawatt hours used by all of modern society each year.Bill Nussey (The Freeing Energy Project)
where does one even start...
I kinda wish I could innocently ask him what light is.
This literally cost him nothing to say and it'll probably have the effect he's going for.
Nobody's going to try to hold him up to this more than what you're doing, and nobody cares. His voters will still take this and "believe" it knowing it to be 100% false--250% false even since it's not even decipherable--and respond to anything you might say with, "Stop being rude."
I have a hard time calling him stupid for that.
The shape of a lie is indicative of its source.
Koch Network billionaires like Tim Mellon & Charles Koch are paying RFK Jr to lie about climate change & the fossil fuel industry's culpability in an ecocide.
ah yeah, can confirm. voltage x current x time results in the famous electrenergy. very different from energy.
and to the stake with people, claiming electrical energy is the noblest form of energy, because it can turn in every other form

Sec'y Chris Wright is dumb as a post, or willing to shill whatever focus-grouped sloganeering team Trump tells him to use, so that it can keep rewarding the fossil fuel industry.
His facts are wrong. And not every solar panel is the same as every other, nor is every installation. He's also ignoring wind energy, perhaps because Trump is as afraid of it as he is of electricity, boats, and sharks. Wright is a shill.

Stop assuming truth is in any way related to this US administration!
It’s more related to WWE ”wrestling”.
Hm. Has Chris Wright published the calculation how he come to the conclusion? - I made a rough one and come to the rseult that it will be several 100 times more electric energy than we consume primary energy?! ...
Maybe Chris Wright is a genius maybe he is one like Trump ... i'm not unsure.
I'm assuming human yearly use is ~145 PWh / year.
Also assuming an average solar panel yield of 500 kWh / square meter / year.
(note that typical nominal output (MW) ratings are useless for this yield calculation, because how much MWh did you actually make?)
In my napkin calculation this means you need about 290 billion m^2, so 290 thousand km^2, so about 6 times the Netherlands.
It's a very rough calculation with outrageously lazy assumptions, for my own entertainment.
What an idiot.
#uspol #RemoveTrump #EpsteinFiles
It seems to be based on this report
iea.org/reports/key-world-ener…
Specifically section 3 Final Consumption which states energy use in electric form is about 20% of the total.
(This is referenced by the Wikipedia article on Electric Energy Consumption en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electr…)
a recent calculation came out to 50km X 50km of solar would power the entire world.
Obviously needs storage and be spread around, but a bit different.

A tweet from Secretary Chris Wright (@SecretaryWright) Profile photo of a smiling man in a suit and tie in front of an American flag, with a blue check mark and an official-looking badge icon.
The tweet reads:
"Even if you wrapped the entire planet in a solar panel, you would only be producing 20% of global energy.
One of the biggest mistakes politicians can make is equating the ELECTRICITY with ENERGY!"

I so wouldn't blame that guy for hitting that raft with a nuke. Keep those Earthlings OUT!!!!
Yes, they send their best and brightest because their predatory economy hasn't ramped up enough to comodify space travel quite yet, but that's still a toxic level of stupidity they bring.
