@Viss I've got a blueAir (CRBox design, but more expensive to buy and to buy filters for 🙁 ) in every room except my front living room, which has a honeywell. We've got 2 dogs; it's a necessity or the house just smells like dog blanket (and even then, if the dogs don't get baths every 3 weeks, it still happens).
Air in my house isn't my concern, though. It's air at preschool. Or surfaces. Or other kids' hands. Or whatever else my kid decides to lick that day. The school asks parents to keep their kids home, and we usually do if there's any chance he's sick, but so many of the parents rely on preschool for child care so they can work that keeping a kid home isn't really an option for them.
On the upside, we maxed out the kid's out-of-pocket max this year, so all the urgent care visits from this wave of back-to-school illnesses will be free for us.

fun story— prickly pear seeds turn into this viscous, gooey, expanding mixture in the intestine. I’ve seen two bowel obstructions from the resulting essentially hydrogel. One we resolved with aggressive electrolyte preps over days. The other had to be disimpacted under general anesthesia twice.

I agree that using Ai in place of learned knowledge is not very useful, but I understand there are some circumstances where it can be helpful; I'm thinking specifically of some of the medical diagnosis applications where it can predict outcomes with a higher degree of accuracy than human diagnosis alone. It has its place, but it's widely being abused.

I worked for a publishing company in the late 80s, early 90s. The fact-checking role was relegated to the authors (who were promoted to 'field editors').
The fact checking done in-house was by the lowest-paid, newest employees. It amounted to checking spelling in old yellowed dictionaries, and dialing the phone numbers in every magazine ad to make sure it actually reached the company.
Fingers crossed we never get duped, but then we explicitly reject “AI” and Iʼm certainly no billionaire. Just an old-school publisher keeping things going. We did get fooled once pre-“AI” by a freelancer crafting “SEO” copy. The first one was extremely well written but had a couple of weird though not totally unreasonable links, but it was his third—where he just couldnʼt rewrite based on our notes—that confirmed it. Otherwise we were pretty good at rejecting “SEO” pitches.
The thing that really depresses me about this is that for years there was a belief by a paranoid subset of humanity that nothing that you saw, heard, or read could be trusted, regardless of the source of that information. Adjacent to this, when I research to write an article, I constantly have to dodge fake AI-generated articles, and even sometimes whole websites. It's infuriating.
I've seen some websites that were likely entirely AI-generated, even creating fake journalists personas, names, and pictures.
We have to be so vigilant now to double and triple check every source of information. This pollution is everywhere, at a rate of disinformation completely unprecedented. I don't think most people are as careful as I am on this, and I fear for what this means for the future.
@joriki I think it would be very complex to keep up to date and could backfire with false positives, so I'm not convinced an automated tool would be a good solution for this.
What I would rather see is some sort of vetting system for organizations and independent journalists taking a pledge to never use AI-generative tools in their material (text and image). But even that isn't perfect either, and as Brian's post discusses above, even famous newspapers can get duped.

You'd know better than I, but transparently publishing their process for taking pitches might help. Why doesn't Wired require "a proper fact-check process" for an article from a new contributor, that's an optional step? Publishing before paying the writer (which raised suspicions)? This isn't a hot breaking story. Process could fix this but the mea culpa includes no mention of changes made to prevent in future, just "should generally" have been caught. AI isn't the root problem here, a hand crafted version would have worked just as well.
There is literally only one reason to do this - to sicken and kill children with otherwise preventable illnesses and to create reservoirs of illness to infect everywhere they travel to.

A federal appeals court panel ruled Tuesday that Trump cannot use an 18th-century wartime #law to speed the #deportations of people his admin accuses of membership in a Venezuelan gang, blocking a signature admin push that is destined for a final showdown at the #SCOTUS.
A 3-judge panel of the #5thCircuit Court of Appeals, one of the most #conservative federal appeals courts in the country, agreed with #ImmigrantRights lawyers & lower court judges who argued the #AlienEnemiesAct of 1798 was not intended to be used against gangs like Tren de Aragua, the Venezuelan group #Trump targeted in his March invocation.
#LeeGelernt, who argued the case for the #ACLU, said Tuesday: “The #Trump administration’s use of a wartime statute during peacetime to regulate #immigration was rightly shut down by the court. This is a critically important decision reining in the administration’s view that it can simply declare an emergency without any oversight by the courts.”
The admin deported people it designated as Tren de Aragua members to a notorious prison in #ElSalvador where, it argued, #US #courts could not order them freed.
In a deal announced in July, more than 250 of the deported immigrants returned to #Venezuela.
The #AlienEnemiesAct was only used 3 times before in US history, all during declared #wars — in the War of 1812 & the two World Wars.
The #Trump admin unsuccessfully argued that courts cannot second-guess the president’s determination that Tren de Aragua was connected to #Venezuela’s government & represented a danger to the #US, meriting use of the act.
In a 2-1 ruling, the judges said they granted the preliminary injunction sought by the plaintiffs because they “found no invasion or predatory incursion” in this case.
The decision bars #deportations from #Texas, #Louisiana & #Mississippi. In the majority were US Circuit Judges Leslie Southwick, a George W. Bush appointee, & Irma Carrillo Ramirez, a Joe Biden appointee. Andrew Oldham, a #Trump appointee, dissented.
The majority opinion said Trump’s allegations about Tren de Aragua do not meet the historical levels of national conflict that #Congress intended for the act.
“A country’s encouraging its residents & citizens to enter this country illegally is not the modern-day equivalent of sending an armed, organized force to occupy, to disrupt, or to otherwise harm the United States,” the judges wrote.
In a lengthy dissent, Oldham complained his two colleagues were second-guessing Trump’s conduct of foreign affairs & national security, realms where courts usually give the president great deference.
“The majority’s approach to this case is not only unprecedented—it is contrary to more than 200 years of precedent,”Oldham wrote [ridiculous].
The panel did grant the #Trump admin one legal victory, finding the procedures it uses to advise detainees under the #AlienEnemiesAct of their legal rights is appropriate.
The ruling can be appealed to the full #5thCircuit or directly to the #SCOTUS, which is likely to make the ultimate decision on the issue.

An interesting thought experiment, though. A chunk of the energy would be needed to power the massive number of solar lamps you would need to replace the sun's light. And a chunk more to keep us warm. I suspect we would need a huge array of solar panels out in space, too. Anyone done the maths?

As with all lies, this has a grain of truth: Only ~20% of all fuel burned is used to generate electricity, the rest is used for things like heating and running engines... but all those applications can be replaced with electricity: You can have an electric car, electric furnace, electric stove, etc.
