I’ve spent the better part of two decades dealing with people trying to dox and harass the volunteers who make Wikipedia the incredible resource it is today.
I spent six years on the same (volunteer!) Arbitration Committee from which Oversight is now demanding private communications. Even just threats like this one, regardless of followthrough, will it so much harder for them to do their thankless work.
I'm very ignorant, but under the best circumstances if you had to turn something over wouldn't this potentially be leveraged by ICE and other federal forces to target wikipedia editors? Like once turned over, there are no protections of that data, right?

What part of "Congress shall make no law" do they not understand? I hope Wikipedia tells them that they will not comply. If they come back with a subpoena instead of a request, fight it in court. But maybe voluntarily release a sample of abusive activity: any abusive edit attempts that came from IP addresses belonging to the US House of Representatives.

Well-connected person whom I trust was just telling me that he’s personally talked to 4 Canadians who in recent weeks have had US CBP demand to look through their phones and on the basis of phone content been turned back and handed 5-year entry bans. Three of the 4 were at Vancouver airport. These people are not taking their story to media because they don’t want to draw attention to their employers.
Sad thing is, as an American in a border state (VT), I’m turned off from visiting Canada now, because I’ve no interest in interacting with US CBP on the way back.
Among conversation at my workplace today included the question of what point would be a legal liability for an employer to require an employee to travel to the US?
If I'm ever forced to travel to the United States I'm basically just not taking a phone or any computer through the border. I'll pick up a used phone after I cross and use an e-sim.

@johnefrancis No, like hardware that is never checked by the CBP because you never cross a border with it. You would enter the US hardware free and pickup your rented hardware. Once you have it sync what you need to it for duration of your stay then wipe it to factory before you return it and head home.

@mike I'm not sure what they would do at that point. I mean they could try to force you to log into your social media or all kinds of things. The reality is that border security can pretty much ban you for any reason whatsoever, or no reason at all just because they feel like it. Not bringing hardware at least means they can't seize it with all the data you have.

Should have cleaned the solar panels sooner. I knew there was some dust and lichen build up, but didn't realize it had gotten this bad.The lichen had to be scrubbed to get it off, but it was manageable at least. Took about an hour. Got about an 800 watt improvement on a 3k watt system by cleaning the panels. The panels are probably 20 years old now, so it might be time to think about replacing them.
@ai6yr Nice view and it was breezy, so not too hot. Kind of wish we had a deck up there. It is a long way down.
The older I get, the more I think I should have some sort of safety harness, or hire someone. Someone through the MTB team was advertising solar panel cleaning, but when I asked if they were insured it sounded like they were not. No way I'm taking that chance.
On the bright side, while my planet bakes, my country slides daily into ever deeper authoritarianism and my state remains under constant threat of burning down, Infinite Berry Month continues.
4 more pounds today, for about 17 total so far. The freezer is filling up and I'm starting to give about half of each haul away now. It is my favorite thing about August by far.
