I hate the shopping season, but I posted this list of "Disaster Preparedness Stocking Stuffers" it seems like a century ago on Tw*tter, so reposting the list again here:
Disaster Preparedness Stocking Stuffers
It's that time of the year again, where people are thinking about holiday gifts. Although I've never been a big fan of the consumer free-for-all at this time of the year, it is a great opportunity to pick up some disaster preparedness stocking stuffers! Here's my annual list of some of my favorite stocking stuffers that can help you and your loved ones get through the next disaster or emergency.

1. These emergency blankets costs less than 80 cents each in bulk. Great for winter travel (ie upcoming storm), backpacking/hiking, any disaster prep kit. There are lots of brands, but the cool thing about these is they are very affordable, and lightweight -- you can stick one or two in your car, throw one in the desk at work, put it at the bottom of your backpack or briefcase. These work great also as emergency signaling devices (they are big, and shiny!)

2. Emergency inflatable solar light (Luci Light, other brands)
These are wonderful, inflatable solar charged lights (great for camping, or for when the local right wing militia puts holes in all the power transformers in your town). The Luci light is about $15.00, and there are other brands too. You let them sit in the sun to charge, and you can inflate them and hang them anyplace, or put them on a table. Also great for when PG&E or SCE turns off your power during a Public Safety Power Shutoff.
(Update: apparently these are now $30 or more!! Not sure if this is inflation or tariffs... but there are other options of similar design)

3. Leatherman/SOG/Gerber multi-tool.
As any scout can tell you -- you always need a good pocket knife. Or, even better, a multi-tool, which you can do almost anything with. IMPORTANT: Get a good brand, cheap ones break or just don't work - in an emergency you absolutely need reliability. There are typically *VERY* good deals on these at big box stores around the holidays.

@rsanders I haven't had to use these, but a few years ago saw the bathroom issues at Burning Man and decided to put some of these in the backpack and also in the car. Could have used them also during the pandemic shutdown, when you couldn't find any place to go to the bathroom when going places.
@rsanders during the pandemic (and since) I've made good use of these, which are beyond useful for people with lady parts who need to take a leak in insalubrious circumstances

Items like Double Doodie are expensive. You can DIY your own.
Buy a bulk pack of 1-gal double-zip food bags. Insert an 8-gal trash bag or plastic grocery bag (they fit a 5-gal. bucket. Check for pin holes first.)
Use pelletized animal bedding (wood pellets). Made for stalls and help control odors. 40 lbs. is less than $8 at home improvement/farm supply stores. Spread a layer in the bag, eliminate, add another layer, roll the trash bag into the freezer bag, zip and dispose.
@alienghic morakniv or opinel are excellent knife options
An ok pair of mosquito hemostats will change how you remove ticks forever
If I may offer an observation...
Get a multi-tool that pivots the tools from the inside. This leaves the outside of the handles solid (some are padded). If you have to grip the handle hard (working a resistant nut, for instance) your hand will be spared all the sharp edges present when the tools rotate from the outside of the handles.

@autolycos @road_krill absolutely agree. Multi-tools are tools of convenience, not of durability or performance.
However the old adage also applies - "I'd rather be looking at it, than looking for it" - what you have at hand is going to be more useful than what you wish you had every time.
@autolycos @road_krill On the unitasker theme - for small pliers, the Knipex look nice, and are highly rated (left, never owned a pair) and the vise grips in this size are _fantastic_ (own several pairs; they also do needle nose, and a version with a triangular set of jaws that fits an astonishing range of bolt head sizes, if that is important to you)
The only issue with the vise-grips is they inevitably become permanent handles somewhere (like the inside of my garage door lol)
@scott @road_krill love vice grips
The parallel plier options recently affordable make better tools in many situations now
We have an embarrassment of choices
@scott @road_krill when I first got into the USAF, the office toilet handle broke. I replaced it with a dinky vice grip.
I have /never/ seen a repair happen so quickly after that
4. Bic lighters!
One of my favorites for disaster preparedness is a good (Bic) lighter. These work a lot better than the random dollar store brands. These have many purposes, but throw a few of these in the disaster kits. Matches are unreliable compared with a (good) lighter. Obviously, don't hand these out to curious kids.
(corollary: also don't use these in wildfire season here!)
AI6YR Ben reshared this.
I agree with the crowd that say if you need to start a fire, use a road flare
What are your thoughts on road flares?
I had to finally suck it up and use these after learning firsthand that the piezo versions do not work at 10k feet with any confidence. I always have matches as backup at least.
I still don’t enjoy using them. But oddly, I’m better with my non-dominant hand.

AI6YR Ben and Mother Bones reshared this.
not really relevant for disaster situations and generally bad if kids are around but.....
In cold weather a mini bic is awful, trying to use one with cold numb hands is just terrible get a full size, and with item #3 you can make them child unsafe for easier cold weather operation. Again maybe don't do this if children are nearby ever
prior Army scout and can confirm I used the shit out of my gerber.
I always keep my survival bag ready.
I have an older version that sits on my south-facing windowsill. It folds & unfolds, rather than inflating. I love it dearly.
My fav, though, is a wee tiny 3 LED clip-on task light, with a bendy gooseneck. Interior light is sufficient to keep it charged, & it's just ridiculously handy.
"Not sure if this is inflation or tariffs..."
Well, you DID say it was inflatable, so...
inflation, I see what you did there
I have a few of those collapsing camp lanterns with usb recharging, funny how everything has a flashlight built in now. USB power bank seems de rigeyr now, as long as you remember to charge it: one of those battery jump starters is also good for the purpose and has saved my bacon many times over
Surprised no headlamp on the list. There are so many great AA headlamps around, id suggest that way over a maglight. Hands free is amazing. And if you need you can hand hold a headlamp.
Tips for headlamps: go for AA. They have much more power, the AAA headlamps are all crap. All of them. (1 AA ~= 4 AAA is why!) Don’t worry about name brand at a camp store. Most are AAA crap for the label. Fenix, Zebralight, and Sofrin are some brands to check out.
And if ya wanna dive deeper…get some eneloops and a decent charger but this strays into a totally different topic about why low self discharge rechargable batteries are far better for high draw over time and also why you should just replace all your AA and AAAs with them haha. Costco often has multipacks with charger on sale this time of year if ya wanna go down that rabbit hole.
@Myotis_cuniculus I think Ikea's rechargeables are just about as good as Eneloops, and a fair bit cheaper.
The other good thing about rechargeables is that they are far less likely to leak, whereas the major brands of alkalines will sometimes leak before they're even dead.
AI6YR Ben reshared this.
@rotopenguin Not sure! Dont have an Ikea. Eneloops can be rebranded tho (for a time, the white capped duracel low self discharge (LSD) AAs were rebranded eneloops).* You want LSD though so they work when you grab them. Most rechargeable battery haters know the old school ones that cant hold a charge, drain fast, dont work when you need them, so this is the key
And yup! Alkalines leak. NEVER leave alkaline batteries in *anything*. Just. Switch to good LSD rechargeables for sooo many reasons.
*a quick search it seems people think the 2450mAh AA ikea rechargables are eneloops rebranded. Specifically those.
I would recommend the Mini Mag Lite LED over the incandescent ones, and Energizer L91 lithium AAs. You can never have too many lithium AAs in the house. There a particular model LED Mini Mag Lite that has a warm white LED; that's what I got for my mother.

@gcvsa I've not had good luck with lithium AA or AAAs.
They work great, good voltage, but they frequently over discharge becoming useless.
Does that MAG Mini have a BMS to manage the charge? I'm guessing not.
Any suggestions for solving that problem?
Ex: I have Palm sized 2 way radios that take 3 AAA and NiMH don't provide enough voltage. I got some LI ones and they'd work well until drained. One was completely dead and over discharged, the other two read full voltage.

@pixelpusher220 Also, as far as I am aware, Panasonic does not sell any lithium batteries under the "eneloop" brand name, which are all nickel metal-hydride cells (NiMH).
Energizer still holds key patents on the lithium iron disulfide technology, so they are the only source for this type of cell.
Not A Metal Whistle (when it's cold, they freeze to your lips. Highly sub-optimal.) Some whistle is a good idea.
Those very lightweight space blankets have a shelf life (the aluminum flakes off) so replace every few years.
Multi-tools are great but also solidly in the "better than nothing" category; a mix of small parallel jaw pliers, an actual folding saw (Silky!), an actual knife (Varusteleka (Finnish, simple, practical, robust), and a multi-bit screwdriver can go further.
What a neat use of a hashtag. I went all the way back to 2023 to see the start of it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Midland XT511, it’s one of those hand crank USB power bank flashlight weather radios, except it’s also a GMRS radio
For a hundred bucks I can’t say if it’s any better than just duct taping together a solar crank usb power and weather radio, a two pack of GMRS handhelds, and a twenty dollar bills
Minimal kit, thinking about it.
Good, heavy duty needle (maybe a few)
Good thread (small spool?)
Safety pins
Sharp small scissors for cutting thread
Thimble
Duct tape or similar
Don't think much else needed for emergency repairs.
AI6YR Ben reshared this.
My mom was always complaining about her hands being cold. Because Costco, I gave my parents one of those 40 packs of single-use handwarmers. Of course they didn't want to "waste" them on regular winter outings. But oh boy, did they embrace them when a Nor'easter took out power for more than a week. They told me they were using the handwarmers and extra layers by day, and tossing a couple in to prewarmed the bed at night.
This was before Hurricane Sandy.
When they tried to pull the same stunt after that storm, and refused to relocate to a hotel an hour from the house, I threatened to buy a gas generator, toss it in my van and drive out there to install it.
After 1 night in that cold, they got a motel room.
I'm sure that was a nightmare for them, with only one bathroom, but... I heard daily how wonderful the heat was. 👴👵🤷
