I went in and reconfigured my php-fpm pm.start_servers values as it appears default pool was too small and would get busy quite quickly. I am hoping this cures the issue. I found no other PHP errors to deal with so I hope this is the culprit. So I am hoping that getting this fine tuned and all will be well on the Instance, or so I hope. 😀
note: The default is really low which is 50. If I can exceed that limit with only 3 active users I am sure it will have to be much higher. I will have to do more research to see what a good value should be.
@Unus Nemo Nice! ...but that reminds me of a bot I love but haven't seen in a while, and that's the ANSI Art bot. Actually there are more of those, quite possibly ASCII art too. You just reminded me of how much I miss those.
On all my systems, even my server, I use a common MOTD scheme. I use figlet for the banners and cowsay for the dragon and fortune for the text and a Perl oneliner to capitalize the user name in the banner.
note: lolcat will use -b on some versions and -t on others. Use lolcat --help to see which is applicable to your version. When I login in to either my server or my workstation if the MOTD strikes me at that moment as interesting I share it here 😉.
I could likely make a Bot that could reproduce this though that is a project for later 😉.
@Unus Nemo Well, you've hit on something else I like about Friendica in particular and that its editors handle BBCode. It would be nice if text formatting on Friendica would successfully translate to Mastodon and Diaspora, but it doesn't (Diaspora uses Markup). Somebody somewhere would do well to adapt ActivityPub to effect that intertranslation.
The problem is that all CSS is stripped when it arrives at most non-friendica nodes. This would not be a hard fix though the concern is they want a common interface for their users. The only way to ensure that is to eliminate all formatting and display it by local defaults.
Take that as speculation. I still have a lot to learn about Activity Pub & DFRN. What would make sense to me was if the un-transpiled bbcode was transfered. Though I am pretty sure it is the html.

@Unus Nemo ...and now I must make a point to add that tonight's activities with HashtagGames was a delight on your site. I guess if you've read my entries, you also are more familiar with my technical background. I've been online ever since there was an online to be on, but as far as coding goes, I simply haven't kept up with the times because it's all like one huge tech firehose at this point.
I woke up today to find my Instance was down. I am not sure why at this point. It is a work day today and I will be busy this weekend so not sure when I will be able to investigate further as to why this is happening. I have my suspensions though there will be no easy fixes for this I am afraid.
note: The VPS was still up and running so it was not the issue. Restarting httpd & MariaDB only brought it from a 500 to a 503. So I will have to rummage through the logs to see what is going on.
note: Some preliminary research shows this is going to be a PHP related issue. Which is good and bad. As it means it is code base, as I have a pristine code base (no alterations) this is an upstream issue. It may be in an Addon? That would be nice disable the Addon problem fixed. Though I am not often that lucky. I will look through the PHP logs and see which process jammed the system 😉.
That's the least of its "faults". Both Friendica instances I'm on go offline at the worst possible time, and that's when 9'O'Clock Hashtag Games commence then ramp up to peak. Since Monsterdon begins at that same time on Sundays, same problem. I'll have to schedule that time to be on Mastodon somewhere instead.
I think it would be good to have a moderation system similar to Mastodon where you can report problematic content, an admin will be notified and decide what to do with that reported post: warn the ...
When they get a full fledged moderation system then it would be nice if administrators used it to moderate. The issue is gong to be that you have a lot of kids playing around with their instances that only use moderation as a way to help their friends and punish their enemies. I have noticed this on other Fediverse Instances. Not to say this means we should not strive for a better moderation system as there are those that need and will use it. Though I am concerned that it will go largely unused and greatly abused.
@Unus Nemo Excellent point, that. I signed up for a Mastodon instance that I only later discovered was heavily moderated by many other instances because of the conduct of the admin. He's caused no issues for me and as long as that's the case, we live/let live, but propagation is a major problem over there. We who register often have no prior knowledge of any given instance's global reputation. OR how widely in the Fediverse it's been blocked.
kids can moderate all they like on their instances, makes no difference to anyone. All moderation does, is local to that instance.
Larger instances however would benefit from a good moderation system, as it’s also more about moderating your own userbase and content going in and out of your instance. Not moderating ends your instance unfederated from other servers. Also if your membership is open, you want to prevent illegal content, as you are responsible.
It is not like Friendica has zero moderation. It has the ability to report abuse and for the administrator to take action. If you look at the OP it is criticizing Friendica for not having a Mastodon level of moderation, not none at all.
There is no problem with eliminating illegal content, passing it on the LEA and removing the abusive user.
I am well aware that the kids abuse only effects their own Instance. Until they get blocked by enough Instances that their Instance has near zero propagation.
I was not belittling moderation I was stating that I suspect it will not be widely or wisely used based on what I see on other types of Instances that already have more sophisticated moderation in place. That goes unused or abused.

Even for mid sized servers, the weakness of decentralized servers is most are run by regular you and I’s who aren’t professional moderators and don’t run social media as a business. Hobby servers with limited funds.
@Unus Nemo @Samuel Lison I wouldn't go that far, though. If a Mastodon instance displays a Mastadon-generated post, then comments, they DO provide a link to the Thread as such. That's something else that doesn't propagate to non-Mastadon instances. Neither Friendica or Diaspora even offer that sort of feature.
yeah, I am replying and reading through micro.blog and there is a link to “conversation” which I can click and see the whole conversation and should have done that initially before responding. I am new to this #fediverse thing 😁
Maybe replies shouldn’t automatically show up in all your followers feeds by default as they are not really part of that specific conversation.
same boat here. Annoying that all I see in my timeline is a response to someone’s post. Because I follow you and not the OP. I either have to click directly on your response or click on “conversation” (in micro.blog) to open the full thread, or at least, what’s loaded on this instance.

@Samuel Lison @Unus Nemo Actually, jumping in on a conversation is one of the delights of the Fediverse. Last year, I think, during MastodonMigration's influx of Twitter refugees, somebody posted a poll about which key did you click first: Home or Federated. I daresay I was in a tiny minority of people who responded "Federated", but then again, Mastodon posts both postings and replies individually but provide a link to a thread.
Friendica displays posts and their subsequent comments together, but your Settings determine how those are displayed, so you have a choice in the matter.
Can you tell me what time, your time, that the server was down. When I got up today it was down. I believe I have figured out the issue but it still may need some fine tuning.
@Unus Nemo Roughly 8pm central--that's when I found it down, and it was down this morning too. I suspect it went down earlier than that. Strangely enough, it's the same time Friendica My Portal frequently goes offline, though it doesn't do that consistently. Just mostly.
I went through my logs and found that fpm-php was having issues. I have made some adjustments and I hope they are fine though I will not have time to further research and adjust until next Monday.
@Unus Nemo Understood, and kudos to you to at least keeping your users posted on what's going on when you find it. The one major issue that caused me to move off of Friendica My Portal is that it was taken down by the admin and the admin didn't announce the fact other than to render the messaging editor unfunctional. I understand the need for periodic maintenance of any given site, but making a site look usable when it isn't, and not announce what you're fixin' to do in advance of the fact....or, better, a "This site is not available at this time, check back later"...is just outright rude and abusive.
I do my experimental work on a test server not this production server. I will have to take it down from time to time for updates though that will not be too often and I will announce ahead of time. At the moment I have not time to do any updates, not even ones that are needed 😉. Though this version appears fairly stable so I am not pressed to go cutting edge at the moment.

This is not my only server for Rogue Project as this one is dedicated to just my Friendica Instance. It is as much as I can afford at this time.
I first started this Instance when I left All Things Meta behind me. It was my intention to invite my family and friends to my Instance though that has not turned out as planned. I have considered taking my server down and re-purposing the VPS. Though just as I was getting ready to do that I started getting a few active users. I will not close my Instance so long as I have a single active user. So if you are concerned that the Instance may close then stay active. 😀 And that will not happen.

@Unus Nemo Good to know. I just joined this instance because I favor the Friendica format but was unable to find more than 3 active instances with more than one user, via the fediverse observer list, 2 of which are usable and 1 of which is frequently disfunctional.
I had every intention of staying active here, but checking for my posts here via elsewhere in the Fediverse, I find my posts here just aren't arriving in the fediverse web in timely fashion so activity is going to remain difficult for me as long as that's true; activity is dependent on interactivity, I'm afraid. You have my word that I'll do my best; I just miss my favorite bots and larger list of contacts.
I cannot control propagation anymore than any other administrator of any Instance. It is the nature of the Fediverse. The only Instance that is going to immediately get your posts is the local Instance. The good news is that the more you interact with the other nodes (Instances) the faster the propagation will get with those nodes. That means interacting with other members of other nodes is important to building propagation speed. If you check how quickly your posts propagate to a node that no member of this Instance ever communicates with or has any contacts there then it may take a very long time indeed. It may even become so old before propagation that the node will just reject the post as out dated.

As far as Bots go, I have not had time to care about any thus far. Point out any that you think would be favorable and will not spam members. I will look into them. I am not against users having Bot Accounts, I am against Bots for Advertising, Religion or Politics. Also note that if you follow a Bot account from another Instance then you will see their activity in your Friends Conversation Tab.
You might want to check out Friendica World they are a much larger Instance with over a thousand users. Thus you will find propagation may be more acceptable with that Instance.
@Unus Nemo Goodness--I wonder why the fediverse observer didn't mention Friendica World? I'm also wondering why I didn't get a notification that you replied. When I looked at my Settings, I saw only Notifications for email and push notifications to one's desktop.
I'll take this time to mention what I do like about your site--the Save to Folder feature actually works! You can add different folders to the group! And your Circles actually work too! Circles is one of the features that any given refugee from the now-defunct GPlus is fond of. And of course there are the fun bots I'm fond of, like Capybara Every Hour and the one a bunch of us have fun with, Endless Screaming ( @scream) because it's quite interactive when invoked. In other fave activities, I play Hashtag Games but that def requires the high propagation rate for interactivity. Thanks for your response.

The fact is I started this Instance within the first week of being on the Fediverse so I did not even know all of Friendica's features (and still do not) before I had an Instance up and running. There are other Addons I can enable though I have not at the moment as I do not know they would be useful. So at this point I have a minimal set enabled. Basically, only what I am using. Let me know if you have a use for a certain Addon and I can enable it for you.

Since I'm not a coder as such, I can't say that I am aware of all standard Friendica features to know everything that works or doesn't work, I'd be happy to keep in touch with what I find here, and compare to other Friendica sites have/had going (one is defunct, actually: Outsourced Math). For all its issues, your site so far is the best one I've been on.
I hope all members of this instance are finding the Rogue Project Friendica Instance friendly and comfortable. There are very few rules here other than you cannot use the site to violate the law, DO NOT be rude and/or disrespectful to others on this Instance or other federated Instances and you may not register a Bot Account without first letting the administrator know prior to doing so.

When you do a mention (use @username), if that person is not on your contacts or a member of the local instance it is not going to turn up any results. The @scream bot is not on this instance, and if anyone put a bot on my instance without first letting me know I would ban the account anyway. Bots can be useful and they can be an annoyance.
Stock contrarians looking to buy on the dip should be aware that it's likely that the dip hasn't hit bottom yet. If you're inclined to buy at this time, you're more likely to not bet the farm on the dip and instead look toward a more disciplined dollar-cost-averaging approach. and take a stricter position on the role that the P/E plays--you don't want stock in a company with an insane multiple.
I wonder why the Compose button disappears when I'm in Global feed mode on this instance. Strange, strange.
This is standard behavior for friendica. It has behaved this way since first installation and this behavior is consistent on Friendica World which is the only other instance I am a member of. If it is different on another instance then they changed the behavior of the compose button on their instance. The Compose Button only shows when you are on the Home Tab(House Icon) My Posts and Conversations or the My Friends Conversations (Block Icon).
I have added a Scheme to the instance, and it is the default, called Bookface. It is an extension to the Frio Theme. This is a link on some customization you can make with Bookface.
If you do not like Bookface you can choose one of the default Schemes to Frio instead, or even to use a different theme. This can all be adjusted by editing your profile in the Display Tab.

Outsourced Math went kaput and Friendica My Portal became irretrievably unusable (and I like Friendica generally speaking but find instances of that few and far between) so now I hope to settle in the Rogue Project with hopes it lasts longer than the other two Friendica instances I was on.
I'm a Google Plus refugee who began in the Fediverse via Diaspora, only to find that to be highly problematic; Mastodon, I find quirky but that depends on the instance too, by the looks of it. Currently on the highly curtailed Qoto instance for Mastodon, so still looking around albeit casually for a new place for that.
I occasionally play #9OclockHashtagGames and participate in #monsterdon, and I do not boost posts with links to paywalled media (rare exceptions, tho) or YouTube anything until they change their policy regarding ad blockers. Paywallers and ad block blockers need to pay me in advance for promoting anything of theirs online. They don't get a free promotional ride on my dime.
This instance will be around for a while or I hope it will 😉. I work full time so I do not always have as much free time as I would like to improve the instance.
I have done a lot of work to get it stable after the default installation. This has a lot to do with the fact that I do not like Ubuntu and have a lot more experience with Red Hat based GNU/Linux platforms than Debian. So I chose Rocky Linux 9 as my OS for my VPS where my instance resides. The developers of friendica use Debian based systems so I had to do some additional work to get my LAMP setup with all the PHP extensions required. I then had to trouble shoot some issues and adjust some settings for a more stable experience. The defaults are horrible.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to make your experience here more comfortable.
There is no such thing as a best distro, only the distro that is best for you. Personally I use only RHEL based Distros and Arch and LFS.
I would much rather go through the work to install Friendica on Rocky the Open Source version of RHEL than to deal with Debian based systems again. That is just my opinion and fortunately I am competent enough to be able to make that decision. So I had to compile a few extensions from source and enable a few additional repos. A small price to pay to have an environment that I am more comfortable in.

Yes, I've heard the suggestion that I should self-host to get things exactly the way I want them but quite frankly, I don't have the time or the background for that...so some of this discussion is quite over my head. I'm computer literate but in terms of computer antiquity. The time factor explains why I haven't kept up with the times.
Self hosting is not exactly a piece of cake 😉. And even after you got your Instance up and running you would not be able to control more than what Addon is available unless you are a developer. Then you still run into propagation issues as you have no user base.

@plan-A @Ray*mond Li*terally The mitigating factor in hashtags is that one cannot feasibly navigate the Fediverse without them. Another is that GPlus refugees will be ale to locate me because that's a community we used to have in common, and we wish to re-connect. One of the hashtags in my Profile is in fact vintage GPlus: #SkyHunters and there will be others I'll add as I think of them...such as #Twikipedia .

I believe it is a good thing to be there and actually listen. Though do not expect immediate results. Healing takes time and you do not heal from years of trauma in a discussion. If we expect more than what is realistic then we could become jaded and believe we cannot help. This would be unfortunate.
